backstory help for Trickshot

Hey so I have an idea for a hero, I know what personality he's going to have, I know what his morals are going to be and I know what his powerset is going to be, which is pretty much like green arrow if he specialized in throwing weapons rather than archery. His personality being something of a mix of the sniper's from TF2 and batman's, and his morality is more of that of a cop's rather than batman's all out no kill rule. He'll knock out a purse snatcher with a well placed stun grenade but against a supervillain on the brink of blowing up half the city he'll aim a throwing knife at his jugular. What I don't know is where he got his training and whether or not his mad science abilities are genetic or trained.

He could be a big league

He could be a big league pitcher, won the Cy Young three years in a row, and then got into an accident that ruined one of his legs or something like that, or maybe even his throwing arm. After some cybernetic prosthetics from an anonymous benefactor, he is putting his throwing arm to greater use.

[hr]I like to take your ideas and supersize them. This isn't criticism, it is flattery. I come with nothing but good will and a spirit of team-building. If you take what I write any other way, that is probably just because I wasn't very clear.

Well I don't really like the idea of him being a cyborg, but I do like the idea of him being a former baseball pitcher... that's how bullseye got his powers from after all. I want him to be an Apex human/ Mad scientist type like green arrow or batman although on a more street level.

A friend or family member could have been a victim of crime. Hence crime fighting. Pretty standard stuff.

yeah that could work to, but

yeah that could work to, but I want something that's different then the typical stuff.... maybe instead he was saved by a hero, which inspired him to fight crime? Perhaps he was a bit of showboater, he had a sense of pride about him, and maybe he got kicked out because he accidently broke someone's hand with his pitching, and since he couldn't live with the guilt of injuring someone combined with the fact that he got fired from the only job he knew how to do caused him to get drunk one night and try to end it all by jumping of a bridge somewhere only for anthem to swoop in, talk him out of commiting suicide and even got him a job as the janitor for a local tourist trap, and in time that inspired him to become a hero in his own right so he could be what anthem was for him that long time ago.

I like the baseball pitcher

I like the baseball pitcher idea. But how about this... Rather than being hurt and forced to give up the sport instead he threw a wild pitch so hard he gave a guy a permanent head injury. While not legally guilty of a crime he quit out of a sense of guilt.

As an ex-pitcher he faced a personal crisis, wondering what his life was worth. He lost his endorsements, his high maintenance model girlfriend left him, he could no longer afford his lifestyle and hit rock bottom.

So to try to conquer his demons, he practiced obsessively, training himself for hours every day, ensuring that he could throw with perfect control. He pushed himself, throwing blindfolded, in the dark, upside-down, bouncing around corners, and so on. He didn’t just throw balls, he threw knives, shuriken, darts, even frisbees and boomerangs.

He also visited that batter in the hospital, the one who was in a catatonic state, and would talk to him for hours, to apologize and unload his fears and confusion to someone who would listen and not judge.

He could never step onto a mound again, he no longer cared about that, but he wanted to make his life and talent matter, so now protects the innocent and strikes down the guilty.

Still needs a source for all

Still needs a source for all his tac. I mean, mountains of specialized grenades and electrified stun shuriken aren't usually for sale at the local convenience store.
You said like Arrow and Batman, so I assume he's got trick projectiles. I mean, his name is trick shot. Being really good at throwing things is great. Being really good at throwing things that then blow up or shock, or contain a tracking beacon, is better.

This is what I'm thinking. He tried the vigilante thing. Didn't work out. Despite his extreme skills that he'd developed, he got beat down pretty hard the first few times. See, he was going up against a new gang in his neighborhood, a gang that used pretty sophisticated tech, so he was out-matched. Throwing knife versus electric lightning gun... do the math. He thought he got a lead on their main engineer, but fell into a trap set for vigilantes, and he ended up in the hospital.

He was about to quit, but then his "divine inspiration kismet moment" happened. That batter came out of the coma, briefly. Trick overheard the batter talking to a family member, and saying something like "I'll never be 100% again, but if me ending up this way put another hero on the street, then at least it was worth something." But, you know, less eloquently, due to brain damage.

Trick then went back out one last time, despite being injured, Daredevil-style. He went after the same engineer, only this time, he used his head, set up a tail, and avoided any traps. Trick still got hurt in the fight because of the threat he was up against, but did manage to win. He also found the techie's stockpile of schematics and materials... the main stockpile for that whole gang, which he promptly reperposed for his own throwing weapons. He then proceeded to use those new toys to take down the rest of the tech gang.

That's called poetic irony.

So, while he's not an engineer, he doesn't have to be. He can just follow instructions and learn as he goes.

Well I still want him to be a mad scientist himself but I can probably use that as a reason why, maybe that was a while ago and now he's been doing this enough that he now knows enough to start experimenting with it himself, so he does know what he's doing, not to the extent of someone like batman but enough so that he can make his own electrified throwing daggers and the like.

I’m sure in the CoT universe you have mad science discussion forums where there are people who help the DIY neophyte to put together a taser dart or magnetic boots to walk on metal ceilings. Just borrow parts from old toasters and digital alarm clocks.

Someone IRL has made magnetic boots to walk on a ceiling. Also pneumatic Wolverine claws, wrist mounted flame throwers, a hover bike, etc.

Maybe he just uses his 'S-mart' card and buys stuff retail? He doesn't need to have mad-science skills, just creativity and mad super-glue skills!

I have a teen hero idea who would have some home made "gadgets" nails welded together to make caltrops, uses spray paint and a lighter for a makeshift flame thrower, carries a crowbar and a ball peen hammer to help him get into places, etc

I like this.

It suggests there's a whole mad science community here. Maker forums. Blogs. YouTube channels with tutorials and 'how to' videos. Market websites where you can buy hardware or components. Repository websites where you can download free-to-use schematics or submit your own designs.

The mainstream comics tradition of Tony Stark, Reed Richards, etc. has always been based on these genius inventors just... sitting on proprietary technology. The comics have had Stark freaking out about keeping his tech out of other people's hands. I think there's been stuff about Richards accepting cash from vested interest firms to keep stuff off the market. Bruce Wayne has produced some Batman technology through his company, but that's still a corporate thing. Stark and Wayne are billionaire industrialists. Hell, recent comics have even done this with Peter Parker, and Parker Industries.

Here, though... we're talking people sharing their innovations, collaborating, working together, teaching others. No doubt that's dangerous to some degree, considering what kind of stuff you can build in superhero universes. But it's a great dynamic, one that isn't adequately explored.

I can see some gadgeteers

I can see some gadgeteers looking at sites like that, and posting ways to make defenses against them.... Or to make them harder to defend against. ^_^

Something that seems to have

Something that seems to have been overlooked is that various special operations groups in the US and Russia are famous for learning to trick throw various items, There are pics online of Spetnaz throwing hatchets while jumping and upside down and I know the SEALs practice something similar. That would help define where he built the contacts for his tac gear.

Oh yeah, I think this is a great idea, and it mirrors trends happening in the real world, too.
