Potential Hero Help!

Hey all, I was kinda scrolling through my various characters I had planned for CoT, and realize that aside from my teen street hero main, a potential villainess I’ve RPed a bit during the fledgling days of the forum, I don’t have a ‘Titan North’ path true blue hero on my roster~

I was thinking young, mid 20’s, college graduate from either TIAS (Titan Institute of Advanced Science) or Esphesus University, maybe with his or her powers connected to their field of study (exposure somehow or experimentation) so perhaps Astrophysics or Astronomy, or something similar.

I see kinda a space or comet themed hero, but drew a blank for potential powers and origin. Care to lend a few suggestions or thoughts?

Edit: Powers don’t have to be space related-they could be your typical ‘Brick’ hero or a speedster, the general idea and theme I want to embody is a hero who can go from another mask in a city to the next big thing, at least in context of a path or story~

Well I guess we should start

Well I guess we should start with what kind of character you liked playing as in CoX and how we can make a north side hero out of that type of powerset combination but with CoT's new system. Did you like teaming up or going solo? Did you like ranged combat or melee or maybe even a controller type? When making a character, RP or otherwise it's important that it's someone you like playing as.

not my video just one I lke ===> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U6-SdIN0hsM

Ecliptic

Ecliptic
His mother was really into astrology and he was raised with stories of the zodiac, planetary aligments and all that new age nonsense. Nevertheless, his osmotic knowledge of astrology was extensive. He or she has a scientific mind and totally rebelled against his mother, distancing himself as much as possible from her irrational beliefs. But being raised with so much knowledge of astronomy, it was natural that he took that as his major at school.

His senior project was an attempt to prove there are real scientific reasons behind certain historically astrological beliefs. He was examining the relationship between the ecliptic and the path of the zodiac, reversing celestial drift to compare what the sky looked like 3,000 years ago.

But rather than debunking astrology, he was assaulted by the power of a Eureka moment. He discovered Truth. Astrology is actually a rational science. But only if you consider what the sky looked like over 3,000 years ago. Modern day astrologers are still charlatans and become moreso with every year of celestial drift; but there is still Truth.

Harnessing the power of the celestial sphere could be considered magic. It could be mastering the laws of probability. Some scientists might say it is dabbling in quantum string theory. But whatever you call it, This young hero can now "make things happen"

Recommended Archetype: Operator
Power Set: Force Control
Recommended Specialization: Engineer (this would have been called a Dominator in CoX)
Power Set: unknown assault powerset

I like to take your ideas and supersize them. This isn't criticism, it is flattery. I come with nothing but good will and a spirit of team-building. If you take what I write any other way, that is probably just because I wasn't very clear.

You wanted Blueside North, so I expect he feels a bit empowered to make all good things happen; or put another way, to prevent bad things from happening.

I was picturing the trappings of his power would be bright starry sparkle-like effects surrounding dark shadowy cores. So a beam would be a dark, light-sucking ray with bright starry sparkles, for example. Maybe even have some planet-looking effects or colorful nebulas as if we were looking into space itself

But since the ecliptic is the path of the sun across the stars as viewed from Earth, and 3,000 years ago the ecliptic matched the constellations we know of as the zodiac. (it still does, but the astrological dates of the zodiac are many days off what they were back then) So it could be interesting if the constellations of the zodiac were represented. So you could even go so far as using the illusion power set instead of the force control set and the illusions would be the signs of the zodiac: Crabs, scorpions, centaur archers, and fish-goat hybrids, etc.

I like the idea that he now feels empowered to stop bad things from happening, ever since the initial bank robbery where he was just originally there to accompany his mother in making a deposit-a normal day turned upside down and the rest is yet to be written

Power wise I like the idea that his powers look like the galaxy itself is blooming around him, his look and feel is decidedly cosmic, and I think gravity or force control is a better option set wise, like gravity control/force blast.

I also have a thought to make him a Captain Orbit fan, and more recently of Particle, and he has a dream to intern for the Paragon’s lead scientist or one day work with him~

How would you play a character with his origin and powers?

Another possibility is to go

Another possibility is to go full quantum.

Maybe she finally cracked the code to wormholes and other gravitation forces in space. Perhaps she was present when the first gravity wave was discovered and that sparked her interest. As a student, she managed to fully understand such phenomenon and even attempted to crack the Einstein-Rosen bridge. Having created a photon-sized wormhole very briefly, she rebuilt her system on a much larger scale, hoping to make a larger wormhole. Unfortunately, it only resulted in thousands of photon-sized micro-wormholes forming all around her and bombarding her with exotic matter/strange particles that came from them.

The result was the ability to control such forces, because comics. Power: Gravity Control. Secondary: Barrier generation (spacial folding). Movement: Flight (gravity) and Teleportation (wormholes).

I'm thinking of someone who's physically still a completely normal human being, no special defenses to go with their powers, so a protective suit is a must. It wouldn't only be to protect from a stray bullet in combat, but also from the character's own powers. I'm picturing someone dressed in an encounter suit, like an environmental suit mixed with a spec ops suit, to protect from any strange particles when traveling via wormholes and to help them survive if they accidentally ended up underwater or in space. They'd just need to be protected for a few seconds to jump again... so they wouldn't need a full space suit or anything. They could still use powers without the suit, but it'd be riskier. Heck, the wrong exotic particles could potentially take her powers back away, or freeze her, burn her, radiate her, or make her explode, so yeah, suit. She could still use her powers safely without the suit so long as she doesn't teleport.

I like to play in character when I play MMO; but at the same time, I don't usually engage in roleplaying for roleplaying's sake. If that makes sense. I don't go places and RP, but do I try to keep most chat "in-character" if I can.

So your mileage may vary depending on your own playstyle.

So, to that end, I would play the character as a naive do-gooder who is just getting over his adolescence without having to deal with any of the "real world" lessons that some kids might have had to deal with growing up. It's not that he was rich or sheltered, it's just that he never had to deal with the harsher realities of life until now. So the world is still mostly black and white to him. He thinks he really can make a difference in the world and that there are good guys and bad guys and that people who live in the gray have just lost their way. Maybe he can even bring them back into the light.
Interestingly, you could even make it so that the source of his powers requires him to maintain such a stance in order for him to wield them. As if fate itself was driving him to act towards some unknown future or destiny.

I also try to play in character when in game, at least in general terms. I can see that as his personality-and while I don’t think I will specifically tie his powers to belief, I think confidence is something that effects him, or rather low confidence.

If he doesn’t believe he can slow the falling of a school bus from a bridge, but has the power level to, he may very well not succeed, due to a lack of focus and confidence resulting in low power output to exert force, so to speak.

I like the name Ecliptic because it isn’t in your face or flashy, but it’s also descriptive, and I like to think my character believes that everything happens for a reason, or rather everyone has an impact on someone, like bodies or masses entering each other’s orbits~

Power origin wise, I like the idea of the ‘accidentally created a different effect than anticipated’ origin for science characters, and while I may not go full quantum due to relative power limits, I’ll take some pieces.

Any ideas on what his day job may be? Background wise I see him as an ABC, or American-Born Chinese, raised in Lotus Hills but resides in either Olympia or Downtown for grad school at TIAS or Esphesus (most likely TIAS.)

You could also tackle it from a magic side of things rather than from a mad science side of things. You could make her an Astramancer, a wizard who's powers are from the stars above, maybe even give her a spellbook filled with star charts and the phases of the moon, maybe even give a Raven kind of look with a cloak that looks like a starry sky and with attacks that are heavily influenced by space, have her flinging mini comets and asteroids at her foes.

I don’t recall many characters like this that operated solo... usually in a group setting even if only team ups...

you could also call her

you could also call her "Comet Girl" or "The Comet" and give her the power of flight at superhuman speeds, give her a Force Blast primary to show her flying up and punching her enemies, Super reflexes to show her flying around and dodging bullets, and some lunge based and melee tertiaries to complete the whole flying speedster deal

For some reason the initial

For some reason the initial description that you had reminded me of a movie I saw once (wish I could remember the name) where an astronaut gets struck in the eyes by some strange radiation from the sun and wakes up back on earth. As the movie progresses he finds out that having his eyes exposed to direct sunlight can cause strange things to happen to him. Minimal exposure makes him hyperintelligent, a bit more exposure makes him faster, lots of exposure can make him superhuman across the board, but it places a strain on his body and mind when he does. The only way to control it was to wear a special set of sunglasses.

This is really funny because an anime film called Fist of the North Star also came out in ‘86.

Name: Safehouse
Ranger: Gunner
Primary: Force Blast
Secondary: Atrophic Aura
Tertiary: Kinetic Melee
Travel Power: Parkour
Status: Traveling. Following rumors of a huge city in Massachusetts that is teeming with supers.

Out of curiosity since I have his character and powers down, I was thinking about his hero name.

Since he’s a gravity manipulator with cosmic energy affects and stuff, I thought of maybe Ecliptic.

Other names I thought could be nice though were Polestar, Polaris, or maybe Ursa Minor?

The question really becomes,

The question really becomes, do you feel the need to have the name tie directly to his powers, or give an indication of what they are?

Maybe something a bit more obscure? Dr Q, for example. For those in the know, it is obvious the name refers to Quantum effects, but someone just hearing the name may be left in the dark. You could use 'g' instead, referring to the gravity aspect of their abilities, but it again is a bit obscure when someone is first meeting the character.

Another idea is to actually use their real name, ala Dr Strange, Professor X, or Luke Cage. I have a character named Fallon, which happens to be her maiden name.

How about a fun name, that only slightly implies anything about the character. Maybe something like Crush, though that might actually be better for an attractive female character with the name making people think that she has some form of emotion control powers to go with her attractiveness. I have a character that has physical attributes on the same level as Captain America, but has the added advantage of having 10 mentally linked duplicates, calling herself Trouble. Heck, Captain America's name only tells you he is linked to the military, and possibly what his core values are, but nothing about his abilities is indicated by the name. Something similar for Vision, an android whose powers are based around density and a quantum effect, but nothing to do with sight or hallucinations. Captain Marvel has a name that refers mostly to her military background, with no real indication of what her powers are, and a different name she used for a time, Warbird, was similarly vague about her powers other than her ability to fly, the least of the things she can do.

You could even use a personality trait for your name. Gambit for example doesn't make sense until your realize that he enjoys taking risks, not his powers. Daredevil is named for the lack of fear he shows, not what his abilities are. Punisher is here to f*** you up, not be your friend, but what are his abilities exactly? You'd never know based on the name.

The point I am trying to make is, don't limit yourself to just naming yourself based off your powers, you can have some real fun with non-standard naming.

I had in mind that Galileo will be the name of an assiting JARVIS like AI or Robotic Assitant he creates, as part of his supporting NPCs.

And yeah, I feel the name Ecliptic is mysterious enough that it doesn’t give his powers away entirely, but you don’t have to hunt to guess who he is or what he can do.
