Name Workshoping

I made a character backstory awhile back. The villian's name was "Feartopia"....And that name feels stiff as well as feeling more like a place, instead of a villian. So I have decided to try to workshop a better name with you guys!

Rough summery of Feartopia is he is someone who's end goal is to pacify the world through fear, so atrocities no longer exist Uses a toxin and magical artifacts infused with a spirit of terror to control his own army through specific phobias being jammed into them. As well as targeting either a flight or fight response directly, as if it was a switch. Is a solider in his own right, using a battle suit, various guns and explosives, and tactics to defeat the heroes.

If you want any more information feel free to ask, I'm happy to answer.

I apologize if this isn't the place. Seems like the right place

So, Utopia through Terror?

So, Utopia through Terror? That's seriously bent!

Hmm, first search pulls up biblical results. https://www.google.com/search?q=spirit+of+fear

What background sources would you use?

Phrike is a pretty good contender to be honest. Was thinking about having that be the spirits name, but I already had a decent name for the spirit

I am working from the angle

I am working from the angle of fear paralysis. As in making something so afraid it can't act. Which is kind of what this guy is doing, I think. That train of thought took me to the mythical origins of supernatural petrification, like from Medusas and Basilisks. And I think the name Basilisk would be pretty cool for a villain who paralyzed the world through fear.
I like to take your ideas and supersize them. This isn't criticism, it is flattery. I come with nothing but good will and a spirit of team-building. If you take what I write any other way, that is probably just because I wasn't very clear.

Hm. Drawing a blank here. Is their name something they call themselves or something the media would call them?

A name he calls himself, for sure. Classic power trip story.

So I'd then assume he'd think of himself as a good guy, and a savior, correct? He's using fear to pacify the world to make it safe.

So for a name he gives himself he'd probably go for something heroic bordering on arrogant.

Maedar is the male Medusa, which isn't a bad name either.

So. The names that I am

So. The names that I am thinking about as a good replacement is Maedar and Phrike. I also like the idea of it sounding more like a name for a hero. Maybe by adding some sort of adjective? Perhaps Maedar the Great? Really fits the power trip that the character has going on.

Maedar is the male Medusa, which isn't a bad name either.

I agree that Maedar sounds good. But for this purpose I see two problems with it:

Maedars were invented by D&D and have only been in existence for about 10 years or so. Not that has to be an issue, but there is no mythological origin for it, if that matters.

A Maedar's power is the opposite of a Medusa: Maedar's turn stone to flesh.
Reading this, I'm sorta

Reading this, I'm sorta thinking the fear bit isn't the only thing you have to work with here. There's quite a lot going on with the theme and the character's image or goals. I mean, the character as described makes me think of... from DC, let's say guys like, Batman, Sandman, the Scarecrow - there is a fear and nightmarish aspect there, but there's also other imagery used. Astro City's got a character called The Living Nightmare, which is on the nose for fear, but... say, Marvel had one called Sleepwalker, which isn't quite.

The word 'fear' doesn't need to be super-obvious in the name. A strong enough reference works, you invoke the image of something and it'll carry the message for you. What do you find scary? Or, y'know, what might someone find freaky as hell? That's supposedly why that one guy dresses like a bat, after all. The imagery and totem is chosen to scare the shit out of people. Could use some sort of bird, insect, animal. Or other things - one of my old CoH characters was 'Killerdoll'. Name's fairly on the nose, but you can imagine the character - dress, elaborate hair, freaky face.

Mythological references might be okay - but if you're referencing a god or creature nobody's heard of, then it isn't gonna work strongly with other players. Maybe that matters, maybe it doesn't. Depends on whether you just want a cool name to satisfy yourself, or whether you want instant recognition or reaction from people you run into. Maedar and Phrike sound really cool, but if it wasn't for THIS thread I wouldn't know what either of those words refer to.

I really like notears' suggestion of 'The Boogeyman'. Could also be just 'Bogeyman' or whatever alternate spelling.

Other random suggestions. Most of these are probably crap, but just off the top of my head...

Relinquish
Vanquish
Cryptid
Revenant
Ordeal
Burnt Effigy
Absolution
Sacrament

Tried to go for things that could theoretically work as some kind of antihero name, since that's probably how he sees himself.

Feartopia isn't bad.

Feartopia isn't bad. Phobotopia might have a common etymology but it seems too long. These are his goal, maybe not his role. Unusual to name a hero that way but not a bad thing.
I like the fight-or-flight element. Fear-triggered compulsions. Has its own wiki page. Surfed around 'trauma' and other things but nothing stuck.
The ender of atrocities. The Untrocity. Still has a villainous ring.
Peccatophobia, fear of sinning or imaginary crimes. Too many syllables.
Fear Itself. Because once his feartopia is in place there will be nothing else to fear. Also maybe he sees himself as kind of a JFK. Depending how meta you want to be he could be simply, Itself. Then the second 'fear' in "nothing to fear but fear itself" changes from a noun to a verb. More meta, less scary unless you let yourself think about it. That's how he gets into your head...

For some reason, all I could

For some reason, all I could think is "fear is his weapon, not who he is" which lead me to reread what you have written.

It seems to me that he is a would be conqueror with delusions of grandeur, and as such I would recommend Imperium Rex.

Also, it's a bad idea to tell your enemies what you can do. Let them guess, it causes them to build their own terrors in their minds.
