Need tech advises for a CoT multilinguage "wiki" style website

Hi all !

As you probably know, i've already done a website to follow CoT's news for the french community but also the other communities thanks to the google translator plug in (in fact, about 37.5% of the visitors are from a US/UK speaker country and about 53% are from a french speaker country), .
As the game development is growing up, i wanted to make a website which will gather informations on the entire game, like a wiki, (like http://cityofheroes.wikia.com/wiki/City_of_Heroes_Wiki) and which will be shared by the different communities (US, FR, DE, ES, etc).. Ok that's a huge project as i just speak French and i understand english like watson understand sherlock :D

So i still tried to make a try and i bought a domain name, installed a website, configured it with few things just to know if it could work. And... it worked...partially but i out of options after those tests.
In fact, i tried several options :

  1. I installed a wikimedia site but it's really difficult to handle it. It's really really not user friendly either for the administration than for the user who wants to participate. I didn't even find how to make a second language part on it xD. Guess what ? I gave up this option. It doesn't fit with the idea of a simple and efficient website in which anyone could give a hand on it in it's own language but the spirit is in this kind of stuff : a wiki, a cross content tool.
  2. I installed a joomla website and tried 2 options :
    1. i created some contents in FR and then recreate the same content in US. That worked fine ! Until i realized that the contents could be really different from a language to another ! All pages, categories, menus, etc are separated. This means a lots of work to maintain the website in a good shape in all the languages. Everything must be recreate in other languages. That's too much work for me and how people will do if a part is missing like menu ? :/ And, most of all, i don't have the time for it, it could be a part time job supposing i know all the languages (and you are right ! i don't !!). That was an attractive option at the beginning but... like the first try, it didn't fit with the purpose :(
    2. I tried another option, still through joomla. I kept the FR content and put an extension and some plugins to translate directly the content. Falang. That's a pretty good extension ! Just build what you need, categories, menus, contents, etc... in the language you want then you can translate all this stuff in all the languages you need ! Perfect ! i tried it, that works fine ! really fine ! Just, the search module wasn't working. Ok, let's take a look on my internet friend... Hi internet, is there an extension that provides a research in the translated content by Falang ? Yes ! Great ! that's really nice ! Everything common can be build in a main language, then, you can translate all the content in the website adminstration and even search a content regarding your language. Oh... wait... sh... People need to go to the adminstration side and "learn" how to use this extension. Unless it have a front end editor ? Yep ! There's one ! \o/... :( Unfortunately, you must paid for it and it's a (huge) monthly fee... Ok, that's ok, people don't work for nothing, it's understandable ! That was still a good try but i can't use this method du to the monthly fee.

So, all those options are not working. I'm still searching for a solution. So, i wonder, why not asking the community and the dev if someone has an idea of a tool which can fit with that ?
A website which can provide multilinguages cross contents (since for example, a page could deals with the power "Grit" but in this page we probably need to link some elements to the primary and secondary set of power branches which are linked to the classes categories and which can be linked with other contents like the type of damages... Or even a page dealing with a raid in which we need to link some page elements like the big vilain, the location, the saga or episode or even the path or even the alignment of a character) ; a tool with content which can be edited by everyone in their own language and which doesn't need to create separated content ?

What ? it's impossible ? No no no, for a super hero, everything is possible ! ;) Let's make our brains work together to find a solution !

If anyone ahs an idea or knows a tool which can fit this that, let me know :) I really out of options on this case :/

Huh? Didn't seem that daunting to me, but then I'm used to actual Wikipedia.

As for multiple languages, IIRC they're entirely separate sites. You can serve them from the same host, granted, but each language needs its own hostname (en.example.com, de.example.com, fr.example.com, etc.), its own install path in the server, and its own database.

I can't say I know anything about other solutions, and honestly I haven't looked. But then again, I trust automatic translations as far as I can throw them. Google can't even properly caption English on YouTube videos.

Every i18n (= internationalization) system I've seen works by having translators write translated versions of messages. Obviously that's not going to scale to a wiki on your budget. (Heck, I'd love to get translation support for just this site.)

Has anyone seen my mind? It was right here...

I agree with what you said.

I agree with what you said.
i realized that during my tries... the only solution i can see is to have a common structure in different languages but the content of each pages or article will be up to the people who will help which means the content could be completely different from a language to another... I really not know what to do :/

Best you can do is have solid

Best you can do is have solid rules for the template and formatting. Automatic translation is terrible and human translators are fallible human beings.

The good news, is that the actual Wikipedia has shown us that people tend to correct each other and with the exception of a few trolls, most articles are fairly accurate.

I know you're afraid that information could be very different across the languages, but if the people posting are as passionate about the game as you are (after all, you run the only full fan site I know of for this game), then it should not be an issue.

Correct. That was one of the ideas : having a template for the pages and propose a template when people wants to add a page. So as they just have to fill it with the right informations (thats already a bog work to decide what to put in the template xD)

Yep. Even a template page will not prevent the page from being filled with false informations or even a completely different formatting.

Thanks ^^ i must admit i didn't search if there is another fansite on CoT. Just in FR, i know there not :D I am always happy to see that other countries are using the website even if the translation is sometime probably weird :p
At least, I hope some people will participate xD that could be at least a good point :)

So, i stayed on a joomla site

So, i stayed on a joomla site with a translation mod which provide a back end translation. It also allow the user to edit the article by choosing the language and then edit the document.
As i put some template page (which can be translate for now... probably because it's another plug in), i hope people will use the templates ^^

Some things needs to be ended but i think i have a basic almost ready ! (if people want to test, send me a PM and i'll give you the website adress to login in ^^ It could be good to have some feedbacks from US people)
