What was your first experience playing COH? How did you find out about it?

Hey!

So I'd like to share my first experience with COH. Yes, I know this forum is about COT, but I do believe we all had a special moment when we first started playing COH, and I would like to hear how you guys found out about it and maybe what you encountered at first?

When I first started playing, I was 18 and I had just moved to Arizona from San Diego with my mother who transferred here for work. I had no friends, no job, wasn't going to school and pretty much had nothing to do. I remember when I first saw the box at Target. It was on clearance. I don't remember how much I paid for it but it was cheap. The artwork on the cover and the cool screenshots are what sold me so I decided to try it out.

That first night, after a long install (on dial up) I logged into the game and immediately fell in love!

As I was always a fan of Storm from the X-Men my first character was sort of a Storm knock off with electrical blast powers and storm summoning. I spent a big part of the night running around Atlas Park zapping baddies left and right and blowing them away with gale. I had a lot to learn, as this was technically my first MMO and one of the big no nos was to not go around stealing other player's kills. In my defense, I thought I was helping them kill bad guys! lol

Anyway, how did you guys find out about the game and what was something you remember from your first experience?

I really do hope I can find something close to that feeling in COT.

I first found out about it in a magazine I think. My first time playing was at a friend's house as they could afford the game. I just made a character on their account and played around for a bit. I don't remember what I made.

My friends who played WoW-

My friends who played WoW--which I wasn't interested in though we grew up playing D & D--told me there was this game where you could make up your own Superhero (I totally grew up on comics).

I said "whaaaaaaaaaaat?!?!"

And then when I got it, and it was as good as it sounded! How often does THAT happen?

So, over 8 years playing and still miss it almost every day. My son grew up on it too. He misses it like an old neighborhood.

FIGHT EVIL! (or go cause trouble so the Heroes have something to do.)

I had friends who tried to get me on WOW and I just hated everything about it so I hear ya.

Yeah I agree, I always get a game and it looks really cool and I end up hating it in the first five minutes. I think I stayed up until 7am playing COH for the first time, that's how good it was lol. Cant say ive had the pleasure of staying up for any other game since.

I was dead-set against MMOs,

I was dead-set against MMOs, because I thought I didn't want to play a game with people I didn't know. Then the magazine (remember magazines?) Computer Gaming World not only gave CoH a great review, but they included a free trial on the CD they enclosed with each issue in those days. I thought I had nothing to lose if I just tried it... and then I was hooked for the next 7 years till they shut it down. I'm still finding old games on Steam that I missed because they were released between 2005 and 2012.

Wolfgang8565 wrote:

Same here, but unfortunately for them I had already tried CoH, and I couldn't abide the many ways in which I found WoW to be inferior. I didn't even last the full length of the free trial for WoW.

I started playing during the

I started playing during the beta of COH. My cousin introduced me into it and him and I started from the beginning till the end.

I too was obsessed with comics and anything about superheroes/villains. I was so obsessed, I even began writing my own novel.

I really wanted to create a "summoner" type hero, so I made an Mind/Empathy. Now after playing and getting my character to 30, without paying much attention, I finally realized that I was never going to get summons, also thinking the whole time, I was Illusion... Then once I figured out, that I was dumb and picked the wrong arc type, I realized, ok, I can control people's minds and let them fight for me for a couple seconds... but wait, now I'm level 30, guess what type of enemies I fight.... Freaking robots.... Wanna know what Mind control powers do NOT affect.... Robots....so I gave up, rerolled a new toon, and made him a Invulnerability/Super Strength Tanker.

Now, here is the irony in my Mind controller, his name, which also happens to be my handle name, as well as the nickname I have been called for the last 20 years, is BladeShorty. A Mind controller with no blade weapon. Go figure.

But yeah, the game quickly also became a family game for me. Dad, Step-Mom, sister, brother, 4 cousins, both of my best friends, and myself. All of us played this game, from start to finish.
Great times were had, which is why I can't wait for this.
I am kicking myself now that I was unable to get into the kickstarter. Sadly during this time, I was a lowly private in the United States Army that made no money. But either way, am still fully looking forward to the day we are able to play this so that I can become a superhero once more.

To gain access to the future one must learn the mistakes of today

I like to take your ideas and supersize them. This isn't criticism, it is flattery. I come with nothing but good will and a spirit of team-building. If you take what I write any other way, that is probably just because I wasn't very clear.

Sadly I hadn't even heard of

Sadly I hadn't even heard of CoH until I got lucky and got invited to try out the European beta for the game. Very sure my first character was a Kinetics/Psi defender, but hard to say as I'm a altaholic and loved creating characters... probably spent almost as much time playing with the costume editer as the game itself. But after having tried numerous other MMO's I think to this day the only other one that has me as hooked playing it as CoH/V did is Final Fantasy 14 as both games do a great job of making your character feel like an actual Hero. Champions did for a while, but even on hard difficulties it just feels like there is no challange to that game anymore as they nerfed so much of the content and PW cares not for anything but gamble box's these days.

-Heard about the game in 2004

-Heard about the game in 2004
-The girlfriend, at that time, bought it for me for my bday
-It was my 1st MMORPG
-I was devastated it had a monthly access fee....paid it anyway! LOL
-Played it night and day
-Bought a 2nd for my 7y/o son who played it more than I did (if possible)
-Married the girl that bought it for me
-Continued to play CoH night and day
-Ecstatic about CoV (added to my play time)
-I divorced the girl, a few years later (unrelated to my game time) that bought it for me (one of her biggest gripes was that I played CoH too much...pffft)
-Fell away from playing CoX in 2011
-In Jan 2013 I bought a new Alienware laptop to get back into CoX
-Devastated to learn that CoX servers shutdown in Dec 2012...I didn't even get to enjoy my characters one last time!

My favorite Archetype were the Mastermind characters and power sets. I had one that I played most often was called "Satellite" and each of his minions were the names like Sputnik, Explorer, Telstar, Molniya, etc

My family was playing it all

My family was playing it all the time, I wasn't really interested, but one day there was literally nothing else to do so I joined in and from the moment I got into the character creator I was hooked. I'll never forget the first feeling stepping into the city with the character I created and how weak I felt, but oh how that changed over time :)

I first found out about CoH,

I first found out about CoH, if I recall correctly, via an online game news site - probably something like IGN or PC Gamer. It looked kinda cool, but I wasn't too enthused about having to pay a monthly subscription just to play it. When it was released a couple of my friends picked it up, and I was able to watch them play and fool around with the character creator myself. I ended up convincing myself to jump in after a month or two, got hooked, and played it for the following 8 years or so (with occasional breaks to play other games). Still to this day the only MMORPG I was willing to spend real money on, team up with complete strangers to do missions, and spend any great length of time with (even repeating missions because the gameplay and diverse play styles offered by the ATs made it all so much fun).

I probably found COH on some

I probably found COH on some gaming site. Back then I was keeping up on all the new MMORPG's that were coming out, so when the pre-orders came out I bought a couple of them to get the cool sprint powers and joined open beta. Once it went live I convinced a couple of friends to join me. Currently I am keeping a few friends updated on CoT so hopefully they will join me when it goes live, too.

I was married to EverQuest

I was married to EverQuest for a long time, but she started being more about Raids and all the good stuff was coming from random drops that you had one chance in a hundred of winning anything at all. My guild, the Healers United was doing less and less and, despite how much I loved them, we drifted apart. So I decided on a divorce.

Looking around for a new experience, there was EVE, and this new thing called WoW, and something shiny called City of Heroes, so I tried them out. EVE was a complex gal and we never really did get along. I ran through the tutorial in WoW, found her pretty and comfortable after EQ. Then I was trying to sell my wolf skins and buy some bandages in town, when a gang of PvP Hooligans stormed the place, slaughtered the NPCs, and Duel-spammed me and every other new kid in the place until we could barely move. I asked a GM to help restore order and was literally Laughed At by the people who were supposed to help. Yeah, I quit that one fast.

Then I tried the shiny hero game and it was bliss. The people were Nice! They spoke in full sentences. They helped me. People that I helped actually thanked me. So, yeah, I married that one.

Be Well!

When I started up CoH I was in the middle of a burn out on Final Fantasy XI. Picked CoH on a whim and rolled a few characters just trying different things out. Then I rolled a force field defender and was hooked there after.

It's a game that I've been

It's a game that I've been reading about through game magazines during my final days in the military. When I got back to the States and became a civilian, I ended up buying it soon after and got hooked into it. Rolled a Illusion/Radiation controller; was terrible at first (but got the hang of it, and I thanks the devs for the respec trails). It was my first MMORPG, and one of the few that I stuck with.

I had been playing Star Wars

I had been playing Star Wars Galaxies for several years when I first heard of CoH. It was on an episode of X-Play back when it was still on
Tech TV, I believe.
I stuck around SWG for a while. I had survived the 1st Mass Exodus of the Combat Upgrade, but then the New Game Experience caused the 2nd Mass Exodus and I decided to check it out.
I remember being vaguely disappointed by the static faces. SWG did some really revolutionary things that no one else has ever done, to my knowledge, but I quickly got over that one quibble and never looked back.
I was blown away! by how fluid the character animations were by comparison and the character customization and combat were miles beyond what I'd been used to.
My first big "Whoa!!!" moment, though was running across AP to my second mission and someone hit me with Speed Boost. It was amazing!
I didn't have any idea what had happened and after the 2nd or 3rd time I thought it was some random thing that just "happened". It wasn't long before I found out it was being cast on me (but longer than it should have been LOL).
The second toon I created was a kineticist, just so I could pay it forward.

a co-worker told me about it. New friend/coworker had told me about it, as he knew i am a huge fan of superheroes. Needless to say, i began the delve of designing a character before jumping in, getting an idea of what set and style i wanted. I was excited that everything i was looking to do was readily available and was easily able to make my first hero: The Wraith...

Needless to say, it's where my handle came from and Wraith Shadow is usually the first hero i make in any following superhero game. I wasn't able to play it for as long as i wanted, as i was late to the show but there were just so many great moments in it and great fun with friends.

It was 2010 and I was 20. I’ve always been obsessed with powers and superheroes. My girlfriend at the time mentioned this game about superheroes. She told me it was an MMO so I was nervous, but she made me make a character on her account to try things out. Before long I had my own account and she and I played together.

I only played for two years, and she and I had broke up by the time it was shut down, but in that time I had found a home, and friends, and had built wonderful memories. It still hurts that my home is gone. Can’t wait for CoT.

I found the COH forums a couple of years before the game went live...just like now with COT.
I LOVED the forums...people there were just like me...we all loved comics and wanted an MMO just for us.

I watched with envy as wave after wave of forum members were accepted into BETA. There was an NDA and a secret forums I could not share in.
and then...THE GLORIOUS DAY! I was accepted into BETA! downloaded the game made my first character and waded into Paragon city.
I LOVED IT ALL: the character wipes, the level bumps the cheesy paths of adventure...I was on the secret forum sharing bugs and swapping stories of adventure. The first screenshots were there in the secret forums.

before any of the new issues or refinements, the early days were none the less wonderful. I made a million characters and Black Falcon first appeared there in BETA. She even won 3rd a costume contest. But this built up a serious case of alt-itis that I suffer from to this day.

when the game went live, I remember taking a week vacation and just playing the game, for real this time keeping the same character.

Redlynne started playing it

Redlynne started playing it in October or November 2004, and I was kind of waffling on it for a month.

I’ve never been into the spandex side of comics; my standard fare at the time was Elfquest and Gold Digger, and my idea of superheroes was MacGuyver and The A-Team. Then Redlynne left the instructions with me once and, oh, hey, blasters can have Devices... and I think I can make Assault Rifle work as a primary... hmmm...

I started playing a month after Redlynne did.

Has anyone seen my mind? It was right here...

It was beta and I had gone to

It was beta and I had gone to visit my broher from another mother. He had 2 accounts and after showing me a bit, then letting me take over his dark melee / regen scrapper and running through the muck in Perez Park, he fired up the second account.

I played an emp / dark blast defenser for a bit.
Then went and spent the next several hours making 3 characters I wanted him to name camp for me when the servers went live.

I travelled back home, saved up, and began playing 13 days after launch until sunset.

Found it in a store. Didn't

Found it in a store. Didn't realize it was a MMO that needed a monthly sub at the time. Convnc ed parents to drop the cash on it for my first month while I started my first job. I grew up with that game. Got addicted to it, trolled around the servers, helped a SG on Pinnacle with Iron Patriot (I was so mad when Marvel dropped Dark Reign and had Norman parading around as IP.)

My Patriot was a BS/Shield scrapper. his backstory was that he was a petty criminal that tried to steal a modern suit of armor. It fried him and in order to sa ve him, they stuck his brain into the suit. ( This was before the big ol tank came in) He was monitor ed, couldn't swear, be too much of a creep, or too violent, or he'd recieve a psychic shock.

I think my first charac ter I was serious about as Frost Slayer. An alien from another world, on ours. He was Archery/Ice Blaster, and coudl fly. He was also the first toone I ran into a Gian Monster with. Literally. I was looking away from my destination, suddnely ran smack into Babbage. I literally screamed, and mashed buttons. I died. Came back as vthe zone crawled with heroes and we beat him. It was so awesome.

A friend of mine from college

A friend of mine from college got into an early beta, and blatantly violated the NDA took a moment to show it to me during a visit. After “Wow!”-ing like Owen Wilson for an hour or so at how much more fun this looked like than Everquest, I signed up to beta test myself. Got into one of the last rounds, and hit the ground running on launch day. And immediately wondered why I wasn’t doing more damage because I adapted one of my Heroes Unlimited PnP characters into an electric/electric Blaster.

I agree leveling him took some time (and I had capped about three others before I got him to 50) but once he got into the 40's he was a blapper/sapper beast!

COH had been out for about two years already when I first heard of it. I think it was about the same time as the Heroes show came out on t.v that I discovered COH. I played Diablo II and a few other RPG style games a lot but none of them religiously and I could never get into WOW. However, COH was right up my alley. I loved comics as a kid and always wanted to play a game based around them but nothing like that seemed to exist that wasn't terribly cookie cutter-ed. I didn't want to play an existing character I wanted to play my own character. I tried a few builds learning about COH but my first real good build that I loved to play was Raggamuffin. A fire/fire blaster. She was the first of five level 50's I made. I played until work forced me to give it up for a while. Just started playing again a month or two before they were shutting down. Super-bummer... I have so many great memories playing that game! It was a kind of fun I hadn't had since I was a little kid. Miss it and can't wait for COT to come out so I can scratch that itch once more!

Shortly after release a friend of a friend started playing. My friend got an account too, and since he was basically my brother from 3rd grade till highschool, I, by dint of living at his house for the majority of summer, also started playing. He stopped but I was hooked. I had played SWG, but when money got tight (I moved to college) I dropped the SWG sub and became a hero full time

A friend and his wife I had

A friend and his wife I had met in FFXI suggested I try out CoH with them when I was falling out with the grind of FFXI. Tried it out, had fun and went back to FFXI.

I remember the exact reason I gave up on FFXI, and that was when they changed mobs to despawn once they lose aggro outside of their spawn area which killed playing Beastmaster. In my rage, I shut down my sub with Square and moved onto CoH. I don't recall what my 1st character was although I believe it was a Martial Arts scrapper (Monk was my main job in FFXI) but I remember the thing I was hung up on with CoH when I seriously started playing it was how limiting the whole "mass of alts" thing was for building groups, super groups and friends was. It took me half a year before I started to get the hang of my 2nd MMO and built my in-universe collection of heroes and their rogues' gallery.

My fondest memories are building characters in-game so that I can take into the RP forums and participate in thread RP with them, making me want to flesh out those characters and ultimately making more characters to play in-game.

When I was young, I was

When I was young, I was working my first real job and still coming to terms that I could spend that money however I wanted. My father mentioned off hand that if I ever saved up enough, he would pay for half a computer. Neither of my parents expected me to walk up to them 10 months later asking if $900 was enough.

Owning my own computer and being free of the family computer was a great change. I lived in a small town and liked to rent Gamecube games on the weekend, if I liked a game enough I'd just buy the rental copy. But one day cycling home from school I realized that while I would often stop at rental places to look at console games, I never stopped by the local computer store to look at computer games. So in I went, not really expecting to buy anything, but the blue box caught my attention. My only MMO experience came from trying Dark Age of Camelot, before a job so I could never afford the subscription. This sounded similar but it was super heroes, so that was neat, and I bought it.

What I didn't realize, the game had only come out 4 days earlier, this was April 30th, 2004.

My very first character was a Katana/Super Reflexes Scrapper. But he wouldn't last long, I would get rolling on alts immediately. Pretty much every weekend I rolled a new character. I wouldn't have a level 50 until 3 or 4 years later, my only ones being a Robotics/Poison Mastermind (Doctor Sparrow) and an Ice/Ice Blaster (Frigorific).

I first found out about City

I first found out about City of Heroes from a commercial, but I don't remember if it was just a video online or on tv. I think it was on tv. Always loved superheroes so I really wanted to play it but my parents refused to pay for a subscription (2004 was a long time ago!) A couple years went by and I had pretty much forgotten about it. I was playing Guild Wars (free to play mmo) for a while during that time when one of my guildmates mentioned they were playing CoH and how great it was. And I was like "Oh shit!" and went to check it out. By that time I had the money to pay for a subscription so I didn't waste any time and bought it. Started playing the next day or so and didn't stop until the very end.

First character was a Fire/Ice Mutant Blaster I believe. Always been into the X-Men and it was around the time X-Men 3 came out. With that awesome Pyro vs Iceman scene. I quickly realized I hated Blasters and being so squishy so I tried out a couple Tanks. But I found Tanks were too slow and weak so I moved on to Scrapper, which was the perfect balance! I played just about every Scrapper I could but my main character and favorite build was Katana/Willpower. When I finally got around to trying City of Villains the Brute became a close second for my favorite AT.

First heard of City of Heroes

First heard of City of Heroes in Wal-Mart, when I saw the box for it. I had heard of MMOs before and I had tried out FFXI for a while (until I realized they just had no one to play with in a game requiring teams to play...but finding teams/guilds seemed impossible).

My ex suggested I grab it, as I love superheroes :) Pffft to fantasy. Superheroes is so much better :)

My first character was a Claws/Dark Scrapper on Victory named Pale Blood. I also joined up in the infamous Winter Event. So, obviously, the two things I thought during this whole time was...

We stood around waiting for giant snow men and there was no way to get out of the fountain after I had run into it! I kept running around and around trying to run back out of the damn thing. Now remember, my play time for MMOs was limited to FFXI. So, for at least 10 mins I'm struggling to get out of the damn thing when I discover unlike FFXI, in CoH...you can jump. :p

I don't remember how long I kept Pale Blood, but I do know I reused the design for a Spines/Dark Scrapper on Virtue (after 2 years, all I knew on victory had moved on, and I heard Virtue was the unofficial RP server and I thought, "Oh, so we talk like are character in chat when we mission! That could be fun!" :p) named Spoilsport, even if that was never my main. :)

I first saw City of Heroes

I first saw City of Heroes when a TV show specialising in video game news and reviews came on the TV. Since I'm in the UK, it was basically a little digest of news for the game, which was going to be coming out soon over here with Issue 3 (I remember because they had to change the Fifth Column to the Council so it would have an easier time selling in Germany.)

Since we only had Dial-up internet at the time (the kind where you couldn't use it if someone was on the phone), I couldn't download the american version of the game. Instead I had to watch the release date for the game like a hawk, the first time I actually paid any attention to the release of a game. When it came out, I had already read the website over and over again and decided on the character I wanted to make, a Blaster. I wanted Fire, Lightning and Light powers (I was terrible at character designs back in the day) and made an Energy/Electric blaster, with the hopes of taking a Fire Epic Power pool.

Sadly, at the time, I wasn't too dedicated, and I spent most of my time by myself. This was prior to archetype based powers like Defiance or Invention Origin enhancements came along, so Blasters would spend the vast majority of their time tanking the floor. Why get a Blaster when a Scrapper could not only do as much damage, but also last longer? So, after getting to level 30 and then never progressing beyond that point, I started over with a Scrapper and a Tanker, but much like before, lack of dedication and teamwork would ultimately mean I got to level 30 and never progressed from there.

So by that point, now bored with the game, I left and did other things. Then, after Uni and spending some time in Champions, me and a friend ventured back to City of Heroes, right around the time Incarnate stuff was kicking in and ultimately fell in love with the game and Virtue's RP community. I was super sad to see it go, but I do know that, since they reduced the cap to get your Epic Archetypes from level 20 rather than max, my first 50 was actually a Peacebringer, which mechanically held everything I ever wanted in a character and more.

I do a DnD Podcast, which can be listened to here.

Additionally, I write up my sessions of a Teen Heroes game here.

I went out to lunch with a friend that told me about a little game that had just come out where you could build your own super hero. He said you could choose between a ton of powers, make your character look just about any way you wanted and oh yeah...... you could even choose a travel power! You would be able to jump over whole buildings, fly across the sky, or even teleport. Right after that lunch I went to GameStop and picked up a copy. After spending over an hour in the character creator, but not really being finished with my toon, (were we ever really finshed? lol) I forced myself to just hit finish creating..... by that point I was getting really antsy to play. I spent the next few hours running around Atlas Park with an Ice/Ice Blaster fighting baddies and checking out some of the heroes other people had made. There were heroes everywhere! I was completely awestruck at how cool this game was..... About that time, my friend who had told me about the game called me on the phone. I told him I was playing COH and it was even cooler then he had made it seem! He laughed and said "I knew you'd like it, but trust me, it gets even better! I'm just logging on now, head north on your map. There's a place called the Hollows were you're supposed to be able to do a mission sequence where you end up fighting an Arch Villain called Frost Fire!" ..............whhhhaaaat?! this game has Arch Villains too!?!?! From day one I was hooked! In the life time of the game I had somewhere in upwards of 40 to 50+ high level characters, met many great people, created lasting friendships and genuinely felt like I was part of a whole new family where everyone was so helpfull and positive. The world we live in right now could stand to benefit from some of the qualities that were on such constant display in the streets of CoH. I am truly excited for City of Titans and can't wait to see you all there!

......It's all a Nemesis plot

I LOVED the Hollows, even early in. It was such a sight the first time going in and I would use screenshots of the area to help show others 'it's not just generic city'. Faultline's revamp would steal that title later, but the game deserves recognition for it's Hazard Zones. Dark Astoria was never not creepy.

I agree with almost all of this.
There was that one mission up in the mountains in the upper left corner of the map which came before most people had a travel power.

Although, my second WTFthatissocool!! moment in the game (after the random speed boost before I knew what that was) came when someone suddenly teleported me to the mission door right before I got curb stomped. I think I had 2 hp left! LOL

Even at low levels we were given tools with which to help each other out. I think that probably helped contribute to the sense of community for which CoH was justly praised.

I never thought about it that way before, but now that you put it like that I'm pretty sure that game mechanic did "send the right message" to foster a good community.

The various Taxibot incarnations across the servers were really helpful, especially in The Hollows at those lower levels.

Followed the development in

Followed the development in an archaic thing called a magazine - real pages and all. CGW. Bought it as soon as it was available. Unfortunately, I had to be content with reading the manual and game guide during breaks at school. It was a vast conspiracy to time the release right during finals week. Drooling and mind numbed with anticipation, finals were finally over. Long two hour drive home and BAM. Home and crating my first character in my first MMO.

Whole lot of time creating a SS scrapper that had to be scrapped due to a sound driver issue that devastated the SS sound effects. New character. Make level six. Go to KR. Get hover. I'm flying; sort of. Running around, reach a tall wooden fence; kick in hover and rise above wall. Something murky and black strikes me from below. I'm frozen and staring at the sky. wtf. I can't escape. As I suck up some dirt, I see this black clad thing. A boss. My first introduction to the Vaz Eddies, and the source for future gleeful retributions.

Well, in my case it was

Well, in my case it was waaaay ago, June 2005, a videogames magazine named "Micromania" delivered 15-day code trials for free, I purchased one casually, used it, and I loved the game from day one... when the code expired, I quickly went to a newstand and bought yet another issue, so I got another 15-day code trial muahaha.... when the second one was about to expire as well, then I made my decision, I simply couldn't think of my life without that game, so I subbed... end of story...

Proud ex-CoH player from June 2005 to the shutdown day, mainly Defiant, but also Union, Virtue and Exalted.

My brother was always finding

My brother was always finding new MMO's to play, I would just watch whatever his game of the month was. He started CoV, and made one mastermind after another, I thought that was all the game had for a while :P I subbed after I realized there was more to the game, and we played on and off for years.

I had never seen the appeal

I had never seen the appeal of MMOs before I tried CoH. I had enjoyed playing MUDs in the past, and even tried out Everquest. But MMO's just seemed like a massive waste of time. It was Scott Kurtz's PvP comic series the both made me aware of the game and also made me want to try it out. I wasn't disappointed (until it closed).

I'd played SWG before CoH,

I'd played SWG before CoH, but gave up MMO's because they lacked "quality time"- I'd go online, the missus would go play console games, and we'd barely talk about the experiences. I really liked the social aspects of MMO's, but it felt like the guys that "go down to the bars" leaving their wife behind. It wasn't building the relationship.

A friend, realizing that my wife loved comics, suggested CoH. He tended to always play nonhuman characters- the least human-looking the better, and one of his "selling points" was how enamored he was with this game even though he was forced to play as a human. He asked "Y'know how you always play characters that look like you?" in-chat, in SWG, as I was playing a human female in a metal bikini. He didn't even grasp the absurdity of that statement.

That was about a week after the "purple patch" and i was as intrigued by the game design process and community relations as I was about the world, so I downloaded CoH, made a character bearded, like me, ponytail, like me, and dressed in the kind of khakis-and-white-shirt that was my default attire while teaching at the community college. I also made him a professor at Paragon U with a name just a few characters off from my own. He met me in his blue-skinned, ram-horned, as-inhuman-as-he-could-get-at-that-time character and lamented the lack of /facepalm emotes.

My wife made her fire-wielding persona with characteristics of herself using my account initially... we only had one gaming-caliber PC between the two of us. That lasted a week before we decided to get a second 'reasonably-game-able' PC just so we could team together. "Fighting crime" became our dominant "together time" until servers shut down.
