Yeah I read about that a few days ago. While what happened to CoH was bad at least we had roughly three months between the announcement of shutdown and the actual shutdown. The players of Marvel Heroes went from "everything's completely fine" mode to "game completely shutdown" mode in barely two weeks. :(

I hate to be blunt about it but this news could end up helping CoT at least a little bit because there's probably going to be a small subset of Marvel Heroes players who might now be willing to try CoT out once it launches. Got to find silver linings where you can... *shrugs*

I have to say that I'm with Lothic on this one, while it is sad to see yet another superhero-themed MMO make it's closure, maybe this will help CoT in terms of a larger player base. I wasn't an avid player of Marvel Heroes but I did enjoy it when I was playing with friends. Sad to see that their closure has been moved to sooner date. Either way this leaves DC Universe Online and Champions Online until CoT is to release. I can only hope that City of Titans will help breathe new light into those like me who are massive fans of the superhero genre :)

Knew ABOUT CoT but hadn't been following it. When MH announced its close I started searching for the CoH successors. So yeah, that's definitely A thing.

I have a small super group from MH that I've been directing this way.

I was kinda sorta thinking about trying it a little while ago myself. Glad I didn't now, because if I'd liked it then this really would have sucked.

While I played it, it wasn't mind-blowing and it wasn't horrible. It scratched a superheroic itch and that was enough for me at the time. I left before things went Omega, and I don't mean that in a good way.

I liked the OMEGA system

I liked the OMEGA system update. Cleaned up and balanced a lot.

Overall it was a basics top down action rpg just flavored with super heroes. It definitely suffered from lack of content to play 5 man teams into.

Well, the silver lining may be that 2018 looks like a good year to start a supers MMO.

With CoH, everything was fine until it suddenly wasn’t. We were getting a new neighborhood, a bigass memorial to Statesman, Batallion. Hell, Paragon was giving away power set unlocks on Twitter the morning of Black Friday.

MH, on the other hand, had a slow build-up of warning signs, but it started with something as simple as missing a weekly maintenance window in early October. Tempers started flaring when Gazillion missed Halloween, then went nuclear when they missed the Thor: Ragnarok tie-in release. MassivelyOP has the full timeline if you want to look it up. It’s ugly by internet gaming service standards, and that’s before you get to the erratic and skeevy behavior of the CEO. It makes Firefall’s long, slow post-launch decay — and occasional multi-day server outages — look quaint by comparison.

Yes like I said I read about this (literally at MassivelyOP) the other day. The important detail that you didn't mention was that despite all the warning signs you listed the game company in this case (Gazillion) was supposedly still openly telling everyone that everything was fine until it suddenly wasn’t. I think that was probably the worst part of this story. It's bad enough when an apparent death spiral was in progress but trying to pretend nothing was wrong just sounds doubly sad to me.

Again I'll never fully forgive NCsoft for what they did to CoH. But at least they didn't mess around with BS like causing the game to haphazardly miss maintenance periods or holiday events. It's true that NCsoft did catch Paragon Studios off-guard with their plans which explains things like "Paragon giving away power set unlocks on Twitter the morning of Black Friday" . But despite the sudden announcement they had made a clear-cut decision to kill CoH, they set a date to shut it down gracefully, pulled the trigger on the plan, and followed through with giving us three solid months to get ready for the end. If a company is ever going to kill a MMO at least I could say I'd prefer the way NCsoft handled the job to the way Gazillion botched it. *shrugs*
