I was under my desk today (don't ask) and I saw it.
I just found my original City of Heroes/Villains box, complete with DVD and a big map of Paragon City.
The case was pretty beat up from having been stepped on a couple times and was showing its age, but the map was crisp. I don't think I had ever taken it out. And the DVD is in perfect condition.
I almost put the DVD in to install it without thinking, then remembered why the game isn't installed already. And of course I had to unfold the map and check it out, complete with the little scribbled notes on it.
"Beware the Babbage", "Sally sightings confirmed", "What is Adamastov?", and so on.
It's the same feeling as finding a piece of your childhood, or a time capsule with some long lost family heirloom in it. It's literally got me at a loss for words how to describe the feeling. A freakin' video game has no right to affect people this way.
Anyone that never played would probably never understand.
I look forward to seeing City of Titans come to fruition.
I just had to get all that out.

I understand fully.
I logged into Dofus again recently. It was my very first MMO, and after all this time the music in the starter area nearly brought me to tears.
I like to take your ideas and supersize them. This isn't criticism, it is flattery. I come with nothing but good will and a spirit of team-building. If you take what I write any other way, that is probably just because I wasn't very clear.
I still have my old City of Heroes disks somewhere, the like 4 of them in a kind of fold out cardboard case it's got some nice art on it.
Might be the city of villains one... I know I got a collector's edition one at some point with some heroclix figures... I wonder if I still have the figures.
"Let the past die. Kill it if you have to."
I know exactly where my CoH and CoV disks are. The other accoutrements? No idea.
Yeah was digging through some stuff recently and found my CoH, CoV and Going Rogue boxes. No idea why I'm keeping them - nostalgia I suppose (or for the very extremely unlikely development of a server emulator).
I've got my CoH and CoV boxes piled up on a high shelf in my closet, right next to the Tabula Rasa box. I still remember the installer screens, going through the different classes. The pulse-pounding music, which they never should have changed. All the friends I made there that I haven't heard from in years. And all my kids.
I still miss 'em.
Has anyone seen my mind? It was right here...
We keep in touch with quite a few of our friends that we made while playing CoH/V, mostly thanks to Steam and somewhat to Facebook group(s).
When I started playing City of Heroes, I didn't even own a computer(!).
I had to go to the university, sit down at one of the computers in the lab and install the game NEW and wait for an hour for it to patch before I could start playing.
This went on for a few months until a friend of mine loaned/gave me a computer that I could run City of Heroes on so I didn't have to "go to school" in order to play City of Heroes ... I could play it from home (on a dial up modem).

I have the box. But the game itself is lost forever. Man. CoH was my first MMO where I maxed out a character. The year that City of Titans release date is announced is seriously going to be one great year for gaming for me.
On the other side of things, the year that it's announced that City of Titans is discontinued would be one of the WORST years for gaming to me.

I have my good ole CoV box with some figurines in it with the disc set and map. All still in pretty good shape. I always wonder why I went with CoV box and pretty much only played on blue side, maybe that box was cheaper at the time, who knows

I got my collector's edition box from Walmart for a relatively small sum, the reason for it was it was cheaper than buying time and it came with a month free. So I just made a new account and coasted on the free month. This was back when I was a teen and didn't have much money to my name.

Yea, I was 12 when the game launched so it was most likely gotten for me and I had no choice in the matter, but luckily you could access both sides from the one installation, what a great game ='(

Dang, you were only 12... I was, well, a lot older than that at the time. ;)
Anyway you might have ended up with a CoV box because it was the only one left in the store at the time. Remember CoV was released a good 18 months after CoH launched so most of the original CoH boxes were probably off the retail shelves long before CoV appeared. Do you happen to remember when you started playing the game? If it was like some time in say 2006 or 2007 then it's much more likely the only thing left on the shelves were CoV boxes.

Kiyori its nice to see that someone was playing it as young as I was. Though when I started we could only have heroes.
It was either sometime in late 2004 or early 2005, my family was pretty big into it for a while and it wasn’t my copy at that time(which this was a CoH box). It want til a little later that I remember the CoV box being in my posession( which was either bought by me or gifted from someone else, darn you chronic CRS *shakes fist in air*) IIRC it was probably in the range of 2006-2008 that I would have gotten it

I feel like I was only able to play Heroes as well, and I had gotten or wanted the Red box so I could play on Red AND Blue sides( even though I hardly ever did play on red side (I had a 50 or two). That might not be the case but it sounds right

I still have my original CoH box (Deluxe Edition), but that's not surprising, as I still have my original EverQuest box, too.
Be Well!
Fireheart
Still got the CoH and CoV boxes on my desk. Beside my Mass Effect Collection.
My son is the youngest player that I know of in CoX. He started with the beta, then at 5, helped me play my characters (mostly by spamming the space bar). He got his own account at the age of 6 or 7 (we can't remember exactly when), and was credited by veteran players as being as good if not better than a lot of the regular players. It helped that he did EXACTLY as he was told. Tanked exactly the way the group wanted him to. Voice Chat was great for him as it was easier for him than trying to read all the texts.
My son cried, then I followed suit when we learned of the shut down. Now we anxiously await the coming of CoT!
My son literally grew up on CoH. Started playing rignt after launch at 8 yrs old and the first hero he made up was a broadsword scrapper named BIG BAD CAT! Looked like He-Man and a Cheetara had a baby.
He's 21 now and he has assiduously avoided all knowledge of CoT because he knew he couldn't handle the wait--until I messed him up a few months ago when he came to visit. Now he's in agony like the rest of us :P.
FIGHT EVIL! (or go cause trouble so the Heroes have something to do.)
My partner through out my old boxes once, when I asked why the reponse was that the game was dead so why do I need them still?
Dude, my sister sold all of my old boxes of comics (which contained several collectible issues over $200 each) for $40 at a garage sale while I was away at college. Without telling me, much less asking.
I'm not an angry person, but that one took some deep breathing...
FIGHT EVIL! (or go cause trouble so the Heroes have something to do.)
I'd be angry as heck if someone stole my property and then sold it.
"Let the past die. Kill it if you have to."
And I too! Those was worth more then our old CoH boxes.
