Thanks for collecting these

Thanks for collecting these ways to help in one place like this. Harvey was truly a devastating storm and it'll likely be years before they fully recover from the after effects.

Sadly enough I just read that Hurricane Irma (that's set to rip through at least Puerto Rico and southern Florida in the next few days) is expected to literally be the strongest hurricane ever recorded in the Atlantic. While helping the survivors of Harvey is going to continue to be important let's not forget we're likely going to need to be helping others in the near future.

Irma's reading 185 MPH

Irma's reading 185 MPH maximum winds. Yikes.

At least Tropical Depression Thirteen is heading towards Mexico and will likely only make Tropical Storm before landfall.

Has anyone seen my mind? It was right here...

Yesterday I bought a bucket, filled it with supplies, and it will be loaded on a van with volunteers who are driving out to Texas this Thursday to help clear out people's homes and hopefully repair as much damage as possible.

Good luck with the folks in Texas. I -almost- had a thought to do something similar until I heard about Irma. Unfortunately I'm going to have to be a bit selfish since I live in Central Florida. The Air Force base I work at is likely going to assume the worst as early as tomorrow. They're talking about putting most of us into a "critical power only" mode so we may be shutting down some servers that haven't been shut down for a few years now - I'm sure nothing will go wrong with that.

Anyway good luck to all of us either helping victims or potentially becoming victims soon enough.

Thanks and don't worry... you won't be getting rid of me that easily. All joking aside if in a few days I don't post anything here for the following few(?) days at least you'll know the reason why. ;)

It's not ignorant - I'm sure half the southern population of the state will be in Georgia this weekend. But frankly where I'm at we still have roughly 3+ days before we need to make that decision either way. That, and I'm one of those "silly" people who's lived through about a dozen of these things before. ;)

We live on the Space Coast (east coast of Florida) and the way Irma's tracking it looks like it'll slide in behind us (in other words somewhere through the center or west side of the state). That pretty much always cuts the relative strength of one of these suckers in half or more by the time it gets up to us because that puts us on the "wrong" side as far as the storm surge from the ocean and all that is concerned.

The main thing I'm worried about now is how fast it'll fly through. As with Harvey that just happened in Texas the actual "storm" part with all the big wind is scary but it's usually not nearly as damaging as all the rain and flooding that can come with it. If they start predicting this thing is going to fly through fast and/or clearly up the west side of the state we may stick it out.

Basically it's not worth us making the call on bugging out quite yet. On the other hand those poor folks in Key West are going to be screwed after this one. *shrugs*

East Coast here representing, wut wut? (That was just me being silly.) I've lived right through a few historic hurricanes.

If you overreact it's an inconvenience. Sometimes a big one.

If you underreact, it's potentially fatal. That's Omega level.

In the Southern dialect I grew up with, that translates to: "Git yer shit safe."

Or, in quasi-Shakespearean terms: "discretion is the better part of valor."

Well sadly for the last day or so it's been looking like Irma, in the immortal words of South Park's Jimbo Kearn, is going to be coming right for us. We probably won't get it at full force (cause it'll lose steam hitting Miami head on) but it's still expected to be a Cat 3 or more by the time it gets to us. The good news is that it's supposed to be moving through the area pretty fast so there won't be much chance for serious flooding like in Texas.

I've already seen a couple of "eye of the hurricanes" pass overhead in my life so I don't need to do that again for my bucket list. We've got relatives up towards Pensacola we'll likely be heading to tonight or tomorrow so that'll put us a few hundred miles from the worst of it.

It's funny because I have a connection back to CoH related to all this. I had an in-game friend who lived somewhere in California and at some point we got into a debate over whether it was better to live in a place like Florida with hurricanes or California with earthquakes. I told her Florida had California beat hands down because at least they can predict/track hurricanes for up to a week or more before they happen whereas you only get (with current tech) like maybe 30 seconds warning of an earthquake. She was never amused by that disparity. ;)

At the very least it would know what it was doing wrong even if it didn't want to admit it. Bazinga! ;)

The obvious solution is that the Atlantic needs to send California one of its Hurricanes. ;)

Sadly between the fires, Harvey and Irma I think groups like the Red Cross are going to be pretty busy for a while. :(

Glad you're getting out.

Ironically, for the moment, that part of the Gulf Coast (I'm in Mobile, AL) is enjoying some of the nicest weather we've seen in months!

Returned home this week from helping with evacuations and transportation down in Harvey's aftermath. If you can leave, leave. The number 1 reason I heard from people on why they stayed was not thinking it would be that bad. The number 2 was pets. The few shelters that allow evacuees to bring their pets along filled up fast. The alternative then was a hotel that allowed pets, but not knowing how long you'll be away from home makes that an expense that many people couldn't afford. So they stayed put with their furry family members rather than abandon them. With that in mind: http://petfriendlytravel.com/pet_shelters#FL

Yeah the "pet" issue was something Florida finally started getting smart about in the last few years. The authorities realized lots of people weren't evacuating simply because people didn't want to leave pets behind. Many shelter facilities are now much more lenient with their pet policies and many hotels now suspend their usual "no pets" rules during weather events like this.

I heard a few reports that some airlines like Jet Blue (others followed suit later) were offering $99 trips out from Florida and you could take your pets with you.
