Explain your username!

I have been here for a while, and one thing that I have always wondered is what some of your usernames mean so feel free to let us know why you chose your username or how it came about.

I'll start with mine.

Wolfgang8565...

Well surprisingly I kinda thought I made that word up back when aim was a thing and I needed a username. I liked the word wolf and I wanted something like wolfpack or wolfgroup and that popped in my head. Yes, now that I am more cultured I know of Wolfgang Amadeus and have seen the movies and heard the music which I love!

The year 85 is when I was born and 65 when my mother was born. The avatar is my warshade character when I played on coh. DarkWolf

I originally went for Azurean

I originally went for Azurean as the name of my third character, second hero in CoH/V because I prefer the color blue in most things. If there's a blue-skinned race in a video game, or an option to be blue-skinned via the color palette, I'm going to be that. BUT that name was taken. And at the time, my character was in a suit of power armor, and I knew that cobalt was a metal and a blue color, so BAM. Cobalt Azurean was born. So, yes, believe it or not, despite it being my most well-known moniker, it was not my original global handle nor my first character.

As for my avatar, that was my level 50+ costume on my Dual Blades iteration of Cobalt. Acinacean, I believe.

COH had a Hero 1 and a Hero

COH had a Hero 1 and a Hero One. I though Hero Zero could be cool. To me it means the least of the heroes like a "0" on a scale of one to ten. Dark Horse had a Hero Zero that I was unaware of until after I made the handle. To avoid any potential infringement issue I may make my global handle "Zero Hero" or just "Zero". I suppose "Titan Zero" could work too.

Brand X became my main in CoH

Brand X became my main in CoH. Since I played CoH all the time, one day, I just switched my global to Brand X, to which I got lots of "About time!" messages when I did :p

However, the name came around because of a few reasons. One, I loved loved LOVED the X Mask in CoH. When I created her, I thought, "Just another hero in a city of heroes" So, another generic hero...Brand X...the generic brand...like the commericals of old..."Our Name Brand versus this other brand, Brand X"

Which evolved into "Just another hero but really so much more" as time went on :p

That all said, I'm still undecided if I'll keep that name in for the rebooted version in CoT.

Now that you mention it, that mask was awesome! Hoping they have stuff like that in CoT. Very interesting how you came up with that name. I say why not keep it!

Nothing fancy - while helping the Plan Z effort get off the ground, I decided to use my real name on Titan Network, and carried it to the successor forums. Once the game(s) are running, I'll pick global names to fit as a sort of "supergroup" for all my characters, since I tend to make all alts with at least a slightly-connected backstory. If the account is mostly about aliens, for instance, I might choose something like Triangulum or Contact...

Sister Silicon was my CoH

Sister Silicon was my CoH main (triple-electric Blaster) who became my CO main. (Even though I originally didn't want to. Cryptic over-compensated for Electric Blast's low DPS, though, and I couldn't resist. It's fun at lower levels, but it actually got a bit tedious in the high 30s, so I retconned into Power Armor tanking.) I was just going for something high-tech and alliterative in that classic comic book way. 6.02 x 1023 "Sister Silicone" jokes later, and I'm sticking with it out of sheer stubbornness. ????

And the avatar is just to troll any Caps or Blue Jackets fans who may be reading. I'll go back to Darcy Tucker Getting What's Coming To Him when the new season starts.

I tend to change my name with every game or online account I create, and wanted to do something different for CoT. New beginnings and all that. So I asked someone who knows me well how they might best describe me, and they said I'm like a dream catcher. I take bad things away and protect the good things. It felt like a good fit for a superhero game until something else came along. Originally (in CoH) I went by 'Noir' for the colour black. That also explains my avatar.

Me and a friend were trying

Me and a friend were trying to come up with the worst/best pun for an action hero name.

"McNum" as a gun toting Scottish action hero. Imagine the Scotsman from Samurai Jack with the demeanor of Arnold's character in Commando. That's one of the worst we came up with. So I kept it. It's five letters, pronounceable and often available. The pun, of course, is for the Magnum bullet type, as we were thinking of Dirty Harry's famous .44 Magnum line.

I never made him in City of Heroes. I tried, but couldn't get him right. Maybe he's going to be a Titan instead, maybe not. Depends if you can get both a handgun and a ridiculously big sword. To dual wield, of course. He is many things, but subtle is not one of them. Also need a kilt, but really that's to be expected.

Funny you should mention

Funny you should mention usernames. I chose this one because I needed to switch from an old one (Blackjak) which turns out to be the name of one of the worst creations of Marvel's '90's crazy days (I had no idea). Blackjak was my first character in CoX and named for the black and blue union jack-ish costume he wore.

My current one has a dual meaning: revolution as in revolving like a record (rpm) since I am sound design and revolution as in overthrow of the system (like being a part of the move to a more user-centric game philosophy).

Redlynne came about because

Redlynne came about because of the naming conventions of City of Heroes on the Virtue server back in Issue 2. I wanted the name Redline, as in where the tachometer goes when the RPMs get too high on an engine, because the character concept I had in mind was a finesse fighter who specialized in speedy attacks (not knowing at the time about hard limits on animation speeds and so forth) on a MA/SR Scrapper. It was all about being quick with speedy reflexes resulting in a NO GET HITSU!! performance profile.

Well, that was the theory, anyway. Didn't actually manage to realize that dream until Level 50 because */SR was such a LATE maturing powerset back in the Issue 3-4 days, something it never really improved on all that much in later Issues.

The other thing was that for the costuming choice, I wanted to wear black with red stripes down the sides as a signature costume design. My flagship character was literally wearing red LINES on her sides as a unifying theme for all of her costumes. I couldn't do pants and sneakers at first, but later on I was able to.

As you can probably already guess, the name Redline was already "taken" on Virtue, so I couldn't use it. So were all of the other variants, short of resorting to l33t speak, which I definitely didn't want to do (this was in late-2004). Eventually I settled on Redlynne as being the most acceptable way to reach the SOUND of the name I wanted, so long as it was understood that Redlynne rhymes with Online.

The original character concept for Redlynne was a MS/SR "pocket tank" Scrapper. Eventually, after Issue 18, she finally evolved into being an MA/SR/Soul Scranktroller who could hold the aggro of FIVE Rikti Magus simultaneously and survive(!), to the surprise of the "cavalry" once they caught up to me holding the aggro of all those Elite Bosses all by myself. Did that more than once on Rikti Mothership Raids and got quite a reputation for a little while, to the point where I changed my Title to be The Extraordinary Death Defying Redlynne. I did my part of the "YOU SHALL NOT PASS!" that kept the center of the raid from getting mezzed and wiping. ^_~

Good ol' Rad (pictured at

Good ol' Rad (pictured at left) was my main in CoX but interestingly not my first toon. My first was a Electric/Storm defender named Dr. Maelstrom. Turns out my early build was SO fraught with bad mistakes (Including the third eye on the forehead and the classic "I know, I'll take Hover and put 6 slots in it so I can FLY at level 7!!!" move) that I decided to delete him and start over. I couldn't even email my INF to myself at that point (also, this was before there were respecs), so I just threw it all away and started over (he also had horribly bad endo problems, making him basically unplayable). That was when I decided to go Rad/rad defender, just because I liked having the self-heal of the Healing aura, but I didn't want to play a "healer" toon per se. In those days, people would gripe at you for NOT making a healer defender a lot (this was also a time when you could teleport someone INTO a fight against their will, which led to much trolling, good times...). Back in those early days I would get on a TF as the guy in the "defender slot" and get verbally abused for:
A) not healing enough,
B) asking people to huddle up for Accelerate Metabolism which "doesn't do sh!t"
C) moaning "please kill the anchor LAST!"
D) rezzing people with Mutation then having them go BALLISTIC when the buff wears off and they get stunned

But the best was when I'd get on a team that had wiped out on their first attempt at some map, then with me in there replacing some guy who logged off, you hear the leader say stuff on chat like "This mission is easier now.... for some reason...must be that new SO I just slotted into Brawl."

To answer your original question, the name Radiac comes from a combination of technical and medical terminology. The glowing green of the costume and the sparkling eyes inside the goggles was supposedly coming fro Radium 225, which was the source of Rad's power, in the "science lab accident" origin story. One with amnesia is called an amnesiac, one with hemphilia is a hemophiliac, so I was suffering from some kind of radium 225 based condition, making me a "radiac". Also, the technical terms of a dial that modulates a voltage is "variac" which I liked. Like I can dial the radiation up or down, because I'm the human radiation variac.

I played on Triumph exclusively. One day in Brix I was soloing some Crey and ran across a fire blaster named Hellguard. We ended up teaming up a lot, due to his squishyness and my low DPS and debuffs. He invited me to a SG he was forming with his wife, a co-worker, and another guy named Captain Shield and, since he worked at Office Depot at the time, they named the group "The Hero Depot". We had a lot of fun together. To this day I have never met a single one of those people in real life.

Edit: Oh, and the green fin at the top of the head is a shout-out to Radioactive Man from The Simpsons. Even though the real Radioactive Man had a the pointier fin, which was available in CoX, I liked the one I have better so I went with that instead.

And here I was thinking it was Red "Lynne" like the name, as I have an aunt named Lynne.

Today I learned something.

I never played on Virtue for many reasons, but one of the top reasons was just how saturated the taken names were. I couldn't spend more than 10 minutes without seeing cIoud1 and L0gannn knock-offs.

The CityofTitans.com page for a while had a closed loop on the account creation page that prevented people from registering a new account. Also, the mechanism for contacting anyone in charge prevented anyone who didn't already have an account from contacting those people. So I had to lurk on and off for a couple months until someone in charge explicitly listed an email address in a post. I contacted them and they un-fudged the site and they created an account for me. They selected the name Planet10 though. So your guess as to its significance is as good as mine.

The name Grayfigure is kinda an evolution of sorts from my old username, Darksyde.

The usual dark time in my young(ish) life then, and as I got older (and started spouting gray hairs lol), I felt like it was time for a change. Also linked to a comics style character alter ego for myself that was a lot like the Darkness meets Cloak, and Grayfigure is his Penultimate form: Far more powerful, but more removed from reality. Thats what my signature quote is about. Its his ultimate epitaph as he moves on to a phase of existance that grants him powers untold, at the cost of losing physical touch and perception range with all living beings. Basically a realization that even those who leave no footprint on history, may bend and change the course of mankind.

I've had more than a few

I've had more than a few names over the years on various roleplaying sites and whatnot and as a fan of the old film noir style with a penchant for sarcasm and zany reactions to things in and out of character, when a friend of mine got me my very first MMORPG (City of Heroes); I decided to play on words a bit with the login. Black Hat for the fedora-clad intrepid private investigators I enjoyed but twisted with the added "ter" as in "Mad Hatter". Thus, Blackhatter. It has absolutely nothing to do with my characters, save one. Most were gold and silver age style heroes: Star-Spangled Hero and Dr Aeon, as examples. But there were two Noir style heroes I enjoyed: Silver Spectre (A play on the Gray Ghost, Bruce Wayne's favorite hero as a child) and Scarlet Seeker, a fedora and trenchcoat clad vigilante. It wasn't until years later that I realized Black Hat was a term for a specific type of computer hacker. >.<

The first tank I decided to roll in CoH I wanted to be an 8 foot tall SS/Inv named "Red Giant".
It was taken, naturally. So was "Blue Giant". I then started looking at names of actual red and blue giant stars.
The one that jumped out at me was the blue supergiant "Rigel".
It was taken too.
I tried "Rigel X" and that was available! His backstory came to be that he was an alien from the tenth planet around the star known, on Earth, as Rigel.
He became my main and I started using "Rigel" as my handle on any new forums I joined. Sometimes, it's taken and I get "Rygel" or add the "X" to either one. The new accepted spelling for the star is "Rigil" but I haven't used that one yet.

I was glad I was able to get plain old "Rigel" on the forums here!

Because of the naming conventions we'll have in the game, I think I'll use "Red Giant" for my main Stalwart and make "Rigel" my archer (as I did with my forum avatar who was called "Wild Bolt" on the Justice Server in CoH).

I never had a character in CoH named "Geveo". I've used it for a long time in a lot of different games, but no matter what the game, I never roll a character with that name. I've never been one to have a designated "Main Character" anyway. I'm a devoted altaholic.

Geveo is a name I simply made up out of the blue for one of the first Dungeons & Dragons characters I ever had. We're talking almost 40 years ago, before the first Players Handbook was even released. He was a magic user.

I've always liked the name, with the added benefit that (so far, at least) it's always been available whenever I try a new game out. There are some other names I sometimes use as user names, account names, etc. for other online games. Mostly those come from old characters from Traveller, or other D&D characters from my youth. But Geveo was my global chat handle in CoH (Guardian Server), so it seemed only right that I use it again here. Never know when I might stumble across an old friend who wouldn't know me by any other name.

They selected the name Planet10 though. So your guess as to its significance is as good as mine.

Planet 10 is from the 1984 scifi comedy cult classic movie "The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the Eighth Dimension". It was the planet that the Rastafarian-lizard-like aliens called "lectroids" came from. They had been using the 8th dimension as a sort of Phantom Zone for imprisoning their most dangerous criminals, all of whom had the first name John (which is the same first name that everyone from Planet 10 has, apparently).

Nice, I always liked Buckaroo Banzai. I think the site admins are much more creative than I would have given them credit (by default w/o having any interaction with them prior).
My friend is big into Buckaroo Banzai and he uses Whorfin as a default handle here & there. So I used John Bigboote as a name for one of my email accounts (the one I happened to use to contact site admins).
Thanks Radiac

AK's life has been filled with tragedy, such as the murder of her mother when AK was only a few days old!

Let's not forget that her 1st sidekick, Timmy Terrific, became a catnip addict and, later, the archvillain known as Timmy The Tabby Terror!

She carries tremendous guilt about the destruction of Galaxy City, especially since her human sidekick's grandmother disappeared during the Shivan invasion and is presumed dead.

Still, AK tries to be a force for good and a positive role model for millions of kittens -- unlike a certain rat-with-wings, who espouses fear to keep both criminals and the general populace in-line!

In CoX, one of the police radio missions was to recover the "Oberation Oscillthruster" as I recall, which I take to be a reference to the oscillation over-thruster from BB.

This is a fun thread.

This is a fun thread.

When I first started playing City of Heroes, my first character was a Sonic/Ice blaster. Sometime in my 30s, I teamed with a Fire/Storm controller, and it was my first exposure to Fire Imps (and pets in general), and I instantly wanted to try out a Fire controller. But I wasn't sold on /Storm, so what to pair it with? Well, this was in the days before Masterminds, but I liked the idea of a similar character, a controller who supported her pets through crowd control and buffs. /Kin seemed like the kind of thing I was looking for, so that's what I went with. (Funnily enough, I had no concept that Fire/Kin was the default "I want to be OP" build at the time, and never used this character for farming. Never even took Hot Feet while levelling.) For the name, I was looking for something that said "Lover of Fire" and so Pyromantic was born. Absolutely loved the character, especially after 32, and she became my main for some time, becoming my first 50. The name stuck and I've used it as my handle in most settings ever since.

I first picked up this name

I first picked up this name on the AION forums when they were first starting up. I've always had an attraction to the Grim theme, as in the reaper, and I life I'm fairly pessimistic in general. Since it's hard to be just "Grim" on the internet, cause I am not the first, and 4 letter names are frequently used up, I needed something else. Frankly I like foxes, they are depicted as cunning and sly and they are just so gosh darn cute while still being wild. So smash the two together and here I am. I kept using it as it's generally available. When it's not, I slam a bunch of letters and numbers after the Grim, they don't have any meaning, and I become one of the many Grim that harvest the souls of the dead... on the internet.

Beeker was (is, will be?) a female tech using psi/kin defender with pigtails, glowing pink welding glasses and lots of black leather. I have no idea where the name came from. It just seemed to fit. She became my favorite toon and well liked by my friends for her healing and support skills to keep the damage train rolling. I was pretty good at soloing with her too. Maybe in CoT she can have more of a gadget feel to her as this was my original idea. I think the Tech Origin description in CoH included gadgets but there wasn't really any way to properly convey "gadgetyness".

Ahem... TitansCity is the name of the only fan fench website :D \o/ It was created to symbolize a cross point where super heroes can have informations on CoT (in France) but... usually my nickane is Tinyspit but from now on i prefer being "ThunderPanda".
What does that mean ? Tinyspit was the name of my base on CoH. The contraction of "The tiny's pit" but... some time after created it, i realized that it could also be read as "tiny spit" and i really don't want to imagine people throw a tiny spit on my feet AHAHAHAH
So, now i'm ThunderPanda just because i love pandas and i'm more dynamic than them :D

Tinka is a childhood nickname. It was taken on some game or forum a few years ago so I just made this up as an alternative on the fly because I'm impatient. Coming up with names is one of my least favorite things to do. That's why I use the same 2-3 on everything.

So that's about it. And also it has nothing to do with a cartoon fairy. At all.

Where to begin... Duke Booter is just my xbox handle. Came up with it one night after a bunch of beers with friends as I was setting xbox live my account.

However, in COV (started there as the people I was playing with wanted spend more time villans side) my account name was my first character, Agni Vulcanus (fire/kin corr, agni is the Hindu word for fire, and Vulcan the greek god of fire). A demon accountable only to the devil himself (I wish I still had his little back story saved, nice villainous read). I do plan on taking that name when CoT comes online. But maybe this time he will be "good" demon, on the lines of hellboy.

Lin Chiao Feng was a character I played way back in an old Castle Falkenstein campaign around 1999. She was an inventor from Shanghai with impressive academic credentials and a knack for finding trouble. "Lin" is her family name and "Chiao Feng" is her given name (which means "clever phoenix"). A Chinese friend of mine helped me come up with her name, and like an idiot I lost the paper with the Chinese spelling.

So when I signed in to CoH way back in 2004, I recreated her in game with a more modern background: she emigrated from Shanghai and ran a mecha repair shop in King's Row in Paragon City, and after the Rikti invasion wrecked the city, decided to pitch in with heroics around town. She'll probably have a similar back story in CoT.

Has anyone seen my mind? It was right here...

Kings Row was the crucible which tempered and forged some of Earth-P's Mightiest Hero(in)es!

I hope that I will be able to afford a veterinary building (with a plaque!) during the upcoming fundraiser. Then, I'll need to figure out which CoT neighborhood is analogous to Kings Row.

Hi all,

Hi all,

To explain my username, it's quite simple.... I was watching an anime at the time(Inu-Yasha) and i was making a new character. My main(Kenshin) was a SR/Katana Scrapper and i hated the animations(until it had a kenshin related complete overhaul), so i wanted a new character.

So, i chose the name Kaigame, Kagome was the character from Inu-Yasha, so i changed the name a little bit and there you go, i put more hours into that hero(Earth/Emp controller) than any other. I've been using it ever since anywhere i can.

If you think things can't get any worse, it's probably because you lack sufficient imagination.

King's Row was also the first zone that I explored every last square foot of. With Lin Chiao Feng at level 12 and below, her only movement skill being Combat Jumping. I even got her up onto the overhead power lines a couple times. (Tried to crash a CoT party on one of the rooftops from there, too. ... [holds index and forefinger up] Missed by that much.)

And hey, where better to build a shop than the part of town with easily accessible power, factories and supply yards in walking distance, and wandering clockworks to scrap for parts?

It probably took a few months of posting on this forum to "reprogram" my brain for that. It likely helped that I never often abbreviated "Circle of Thorns" anyway so I wasn't overwhelmingly used to using "CoT" that way in the first place.

The abbreviation that took me longer to get over was "CoX". Back when they were still treating the game like "CoH" and "CoV" were two -separate- games it became common for many people to refer to both games together as "CoX" (X obviously standing in for either 'H' or 'V'). But once the account systems of the two "games" were merged (because code wise the game was always a single unified game after Issue 6) the whole idea of CoV being a "thing" was dropped and the entire game was hence known just as CoH. It took me maybe a year or more to stop using "CoX" since that no longer meant anything in the merged environment.

I had to hide my comic addiction, my dad called it trash and would dispose of any comic he found, my Science Fiction collection he tolerated because it made me read. I've never understood anyone who would categorically dismiss comic books as valueless for young people. I'm sure some people object to them on weird moral/religious grounds and most of them are not as significant as your average Shakespeare or Mark Twain. Regardless I consider them a "gateway drug" towards reading more significant literature later in life. Obviously there are some comics that are geared toward "mature/adult" readers and you wouldn't want your average 6 or 8 year old reading those. But anything that's age-appropriate could only FOSTER a life-long love of reading.

And let's not even dwell on the tragedy of throwing away potentially collectible issues. I never had a huge comic book collection as a kid but I know (based on a bit of semi-recent research) I had enough of them kept in fairly pristine condition that would have been worth a few hundred dollars today if my parents hadn't simply thrown them out because "I hadn't looked at them in a while" or some-such. *sigh*

The first book he checked out was Dune, impressed the heck out of him, after that, he went through all of them. He called me one day when I was at work and asked if I had any more books by Asimov and Herbert!

Get them hooked on the great grandmasters of the art and then you can introduce them to the lesser known greats, like Hogan, Flint, and Bujold.

I found comics to be a good way to get some kids who didn't care to read, to read.

Indeed, people lose out on the possibilities by outright dismissing anything. Explore, investigate, learn, THEN decide what is and is not "trash".

My father did apologise later for being overly critical of my reading material when he learned that in Junior High (Grade 7 or 8) they tested my vocabulary and found it to be at a collegiate level.

That's a common effect of reading good books. I also tested with college-level reading and vocabulary at a young age. I got my start gobbling up Louis Lamour books, then shifted to Tolkien and I've been an 'addict' ever since.

When I was a kid, comic books were a godsend. So much of the "literature" targeted at kids was so awful, just absolute tripe. Comic books, at least the ones I gravitated to, were sophisticated literature by comparison. The vocabulary was more advanced, the underlying ideas were more complex, and the dilemmas the protagonists found themselves in, though fantastic, were more relevant to me than the contrived stereotypes found elsewhere.

Safehouse is the nickname of the main character in my book series, which I was working on even before City of Heroes was in my life and am still working on to this day. My avatar is actually a (super blurry) illustration for the series. My time playing CoH forever tied the two together in my mind, and now I use Safehouse for most superhero/supernatural related creative endeavors.

Name: Safehouse
Ranger: Gunner
Primary: Force Blast
Secondary: Atrophic Aura
Tertiary: Kinetic Melee
Travel Power: Parkour
Status: Traveling. Following rumors of a huge city in Massachusetts that is teeming with supers.

When CoX died, I tried to make characters on CO, but couldn't get them quite the same. One used wind, and they didn't have that at launch, and the other used spikes, and they didn't have that. So, I made a new character named Biotope Z. Haven't played him in a long time though (because CO bad, very bad).

Z's origin was similar to "The Fly"... things getting combined by a teleport. Except, this was a teleport designed to save entire city districts. They tested it on a wildlife preserve, and it combined EVERYTHING, including a couple people who were there. So Z had two different sets of human memories all mashed up into one nonsense timeline in its head and hundreds of competing instincts. It was a "biotope" all in one person. Long story short, went through some really bad stuff that turned it cold and viscous. I don't think I'll bring Z to CoT because I already have another gene freak in the works, but if I did, it'd be a villain with whatever defense is closest to regeneration (grit?).

As for the profile picture, I just remember watching that weird movie about evil tooth fairies, and in the scene where one character gets tripped and the tooth fairies approach at eye level, I thought "That'd make a cool forum pic!" ...so not exactly deep, there.

I made a few heroes on CoH with the name Project in front of it. I figured if I was making heroes maybe I should be a project too. This Project Hero was born dedicated to the creation of new heroes!
