Favorite CoH power sets

I was feeling a bit nostalgic today and searched the forums to see if this had been talked about before and as far as I can tell it hasn't.

What power sets were your favorite and why? Especially the why.
Please no arguments because it's just opinions.

I have a bunch.

Blasters- Fire Blast and Dual Pistol. I personally found those to be the most visually interesting. None of the secondaries were all that interesting to me.

Defenders- Dark Miasma, it was just so versatile and powerful. Radiation Emission, great set that lent itself to many character concepts. Storm, every so often it's fun to just be completely Chaotic. Sonic Attack and Dark Blast, they seemed to have the best synergy with how I played Defenders. Radiation Blast, again it lent itself well to character concepts plus it too had a decent synergy with a Defender primary.

Scrappers- First love was Fire Melee because it had a great mix of speed and power but I always wished I didn't have to swing fire swords. Pre-power customization I liked Claws for its speed and Spines for its uniqueness. Post power customization I fell even more in love with Spines but also Kinetic Melee, Dual Blades and Electric Melee because of the customization options. I liked Street Justice but it seemed to be missing some interesting visuals. For defenses I likes Regeneration and Willpower because they didn't require that much effort to work. I also loved Dark Armor because it was unusual and versatile, power customization just made it that much better by having visual options.

Tank- Super Strength was always a fun set and it got better with new visual options and global buffs from IO's, also it had good tank synergy. Dark Melee, it was not a great set for damage but as a way to support traditional tanking it was perfect with the mez, defuff, buff and end recovery powers.vI tried them all tank Primary powers but found I only really enjoyed Electric Armor because it looked great and was pretty damn powerful, it just suited my playstyle best.

Controller- I was never fond of controllers overall but Fire Control, Illusion and (with powerset proliferation) Plant Control were the only Primary powers I liked, they allowed me to both solo and team effectively. For secondary powers I stuck to Empathy simply for ease of use and ease of teaming, until powerset proliferation then started using Thermal or Dark Affinity simply for variety.

Corruptor- Electric Blast, Fire Blast, Radiation Blast were all great thematically for a villain. For secondary powers I loved all the same ones I did for Defenders but found Kinetics as a secondary meshed best with my playstyle.

Brute- Fire Melee and Electric Melee just had the best combination of speed, AoE and visuals. Dual Blades and Claws were great for brutes because their speed allowed for great fury building. I found in other ATs that Dark Melee under performed to much for my liking but when you added fury into it the set was a lot of fun. Willpower, Electric Armor and Fire Armor all fit perfectly with my never stop moving playstyle with their end recovery powers and especially electric's global recharge and move speed buff, plus the damage auras became death fields with fury.

Stalker- Never a huge fan of stalkers but I did like the combination of Energy Melee and Dark Armor or occasionally Ninjitsu, dark because originally it was the most goofy looking combination of powers and ninjitsu for an anime concept but they were a pretty decent powerhouse when you take your time with it.

Master Mind- Thugs all the way because I loved the visual of Gang War. Originally I liked poison because it was unique but found it didn't live up to my expectations so went back to the old standby Dark Miasma. I made a lot of masterminds but only two ever made it to level 50 the rest got deleted.

Dominator- Probably my favorite class with Brutes coming a close second. Fire control for the sheer power and Plant control for its unique visuals. I liked a lot of the dominator secondary powers but my two favorite were Psionic Assault and Thorny Assault. Psionic just seemed to have perfect synergy with Fire control because they were both fast sets and the Drain Psyche power allowed me to keep up end and health while still moving at breakneck speeds, especially when I became perma-dom. Thorns was just too perfect a visual match for Plant control to pass up plus Thorny melee powers hit like a ton of bricks.

So what are your favorites?

Force Field - because of the

Force Field - because of the simplicity. You could just take 3 powers and have most of the functionality of the set locked down, which was pretty straightforward; i.e. increasing the defense of the team. This gave me the room to try some wacky builds, though later in the game's life I came to appreciate the other aspects of the set (area denial and knockback). Detention Field still sucked though and I never liked Repulsion Field in this set (I thought Force Bubble was far superior).

Storm Summoning - because of the complexity. It seemingly had a power for every situation and had a variety of effects, from controls, defenses, hell even a bit of damage and healing. Worked really well with Ice Blast and Electricity Mastery too.

But I like arguing... ;)

I had a few favorites. My main one was Storm Summoning. I had a knock off Storm character and loved flying around displaying the awesome effects, and even knocking back mobs with gust.

In PVP I had a DOM who was Plant/Spine, I loved the damage it could do and the different abilities in plant that helped me take others down.

Firey Aura: give up a little

Firey Aura: give up a little protection to get decent AOE offense and elemental FX--what's not to love?

Willpower: 3 anemic layers of stacked protection gives nigh-immortality if built correctly--how cool is that?

Energy Melee: Super Strength felt truly powerful, but the pink (or in my case golden) pom poms of doom brought the pain AND bedazzled it--in your face!

Now my son, he loved Masterminds. Oh how he loved his little robots. And by the time you included all the Secondary, Incarnate, Prestige, and other sundry possible powers that gave any type of robots, turrets or drones, he was at the center of a freaking robot army. You couldn't even find him.

My wife was Rad/Rad all the way. She loved the feeling that she was secretly turning the tide of a battle from the shadows. She went with Corruptor because a) she liked to solo some and b) she's a rogue at heart. I'm serious. That girl's trouble.

FIGHT EVIL! (or go cause trouble so the Heroes have something to do.)

Gravity of course :)
I liked to throw some objects on my foes after fixing them on the air :) like slaping them with a chair xD I really hope to do that again in CoT ! Moreover it seems that there are lots of object and i'm mostly sure we will have a great range of object to throw on ennemies' face ^^

I always found Repulsion

I always found Repulsion Field from Force Fields to be hilarious. Take a level 50 Force Field Defender, stand next to a Hellion spawn in Perez Park (low level spawns went farther) and turn it on.
I've seen them fly further than the draw distance of my computer at the time. Other powers could send foes further but the image of turning on that one toggle (which had almost no animation) and half a second later the entire spawn was sailing in all directions had me in stitches.

A new super hero sport, Hellion Shot Put.

Or you could just spend all day juggling guys like here

Scrapper: I had many

Scrapper: I had many Scrappers. For AoE, Cobalt Aspisean, my Elec/Shield hands down. Lightning Rod + Shield Charge = dead mob. Plus I like anything with lightning. For single target, my Dual Blades is a close second, surprisingly. I was able to solo a Pylon on my DB. He was Cobalt Acinacean.

Brute: Cobalt Avalonean, my Titan Weapon/Willpower. This made me feel like a gd juggernaut. They could've done better with the Momentum mechanic, which I've mentioned previously, but I still enjoyed it.

Tank: See above.

Defender: I didn't have many defenders. I rolled my Emp/Sonic 'fender purely to bring to Hami Raids, same as my first tank. His name was Cobalt Ambulancean.

Controller: I didn't have many controllers either. I liked my Elec/Storm/Mu named Cobalt Aeroean as mostly a concept character to see if I could solo a BAF door on my own using the storm and elec "pets" (spoiler: I could).

Dominator: One dom, Elec/Elec I think, and pretty fun, especially once you got perma-Dom. Cobalt Astralean.

Corruptor: My only female character, a Dark/Time named Dark Ages that was fantastic (originally named CobalT ARDISean and looked like Tom Baker's Doctor Who). I even received many compliments on her costume (another spoiler: it wasn't wh*retastic), one person even stole the ensemble almost completely.

Stalker: This was also a concept character, another DB but Elec named Cobalt Aversean. Also fun, but completely 'meh' when compared to my VEAT.

Bane Spider: It took me many years to finally roll red, and even then quite a while before I leveled something completely to play a VEAT. I wish I had done it sooner. My Bane named Cobalt Arbiterean was phenomenal and put my Stalker to absolute shame. He also put my Human-only Peacebringer (Cobalt Alienean) to shame as well.

Blaster: my namesake and badge character Cobalt Azurean, a Energy/Energy blapper (third character I ever rolled and second hero after a failed dark/dark Corr). I rolled many, many blasters, even more than my numerous scrappers, but I loved this guy to death. I never even took him Incarnate, but that's not due to lack of want or opportunity, but due to concept. Across about a dozen characters, I told a story in the Bios of all of them, showing the evolution of the character over time. Quite a bit of my enjoyment in CoH was telling the next chapter with the follow-on character, and the amount of time that I put into creating and telling that story, even though it was limited to just the Bios.

I had at least one of Everything... except Stalker. I must have made 6 or more, but I just... couldn't make them work for me, so I replaced them. I had more Tankers and Controllers than any other AT.

I really enjoyed the expanded powersets available to my human-form Peacebringer. Blasting and Punching and Shields and Healing too!

Be Well!

I always had a soft spot for earth control, it always felt so epic, and don't even get me started on the Stone Mastery rock armor defense. Get some Kinetics in there and it's game over :)

The character that quickly became my favorite (after proliferation allowed me to make him) was my Time/Fire Defender. He was the only character I ever bothered to do a tricked out IO build for, and he just melted faces with virtual impunity.

I was actually hoping to hear more about the favorite individual sets with reasons why and not so much about everyones characters. There are plenty of threads for that already.
It was part curiosity, part nostalgia and part information. Let the devs see what you found fun in a set so they can try and recreate that fun.

I think my overall favorite

I think my overall favorite powerset has got to have been Forcefields. Sure, the sheer amount of +Def a specced out Forcefield Defender could give was fun, got mine to hit the magic +45% Def, if I remember right, it was that single slot wonder Force Bolt that really made me love the set. You! Over there! Now! That's all it did. That's all it needed to do. Many foes my FF/Energy Def shouldn't have been able to win against fell to the might of Force Bolt. Especially if there was lava pools.

The runner up has to be Ninja Blade for Stalkers. That stabbing sound just never got old. But also the staying power of hitting Divine Avalanche over and over in case a fight got sour. Combined with the Ninjitsu set and it was a thematic and effective combination. Nothing like ending up having to fight a full team's spawns as everyone is rushing back from hospital and staying alive for way longer than a Stalker should.

Electric Blast combined with Electric Manipulation on a blaster was also good fun. Blapper/Sapper/Blastroller. Drain their End. Use one of three single target holds, or just Havok Punch them in the face. And with a Blaster, you had to stay on point if you were going into melee against some of the worse enemies. The multiple holds really helped with bosses.

Also Trick Arrows. Oil Slick Arrow was my single favorite power in the game. Especially after it actually started working properly. Plus the fun you could have with spawning an "enemy" target and powers that leached off enemies. Howling Twilight being the highlight there.

I loved my PFF. A sort of get out of jail card, but better used at full health. I could herd, tank... not easily, but poking Siege and running back to the pack worked fairly often. Running through a Lady Grey TF, bad guys aggroed behind me... it got so messy sometimes, but it wasn't a lot of aggro, so results were all over the place. And of course PFF meant you weren't doing your team any good. A fun and rather chaotic alternative to stealth or tanking that offered some really unusual tactical options. Tough blinkies could sometimes be solved using PFF, unless you got nicked a bit, which broke the blinkie timer and things inevitably got worse before they got better. Best situational power ever.

Was a shame when they nerfed it so you couldn't interact with things with it on. At least I think they did that.

I do remember the first time I encountered the 10 minute you're supposed to fail mission with my FF Defender. Just a quick "Guys, I can do this!" and then toggling on PFF and flying through the entire map in five minutes clicking all the glowies. That was a fun rush.

And since we're gushing about Forcefields, when the respec trial got into CoH, suddenly I was in demand. People realizing that the Forcefield bubbles could be used on the reactor core... I did that trial so much, one team who had failed multiple times even told me to not draw any aggro and just keep the core safe. Got a fun screenshot of my Defender sitting near the bubbled reactor core. I mean that wasn't the best use of her powers, but that team just did not want to risk the bubbles being down even for a second. Even had me call out reactor HP so they could patch it up. and yes, I did go "No damage.", "Still no damage.", "Reactor status, undamaged." during each wave. They just found it hilarious. Good times. I hope CoT has some "Defend this object" missions I can do that with, too.

And then there's Detention Field. "Hey, do you know I can turn off one of Recluse's towers in the STF?" That one took a TF to prove that yes, it's a thing that one can do. Mostly a party trick, but immediately turning off one of Recluse's hax was nice for the Tank.

That kind of stuff was genius. Most designers try to meticulously avoid that kind of use of powers, but in CoH it was one of the things that made the game fun.

In many ways, CoH succeed by breaking the conventional rules, or by turning them on their head.

...I suspect most of the time accidentally or naively.

In that case, I really liked impale in the spines powerset and a few of the other powers in that set. The animation for impale was spot on and the sound when it launched was perfect. I loved that it had a -fly as well and the damage was also very impressive.

I don't have the exact name but the spine aoe where the spikes stick out of your character visually and also shoot smaller spines out not only looked badass, but the sound and the dmg was always a must have when playing my character.

I also liked the spine attack where you do a front flip and land and do area damage. I keep going back to the animation but the movement was so smooth and realistic I would definitely enjoy playing something like that again.

In plant, I loved the hold, the vines slowly wrapping around my enemy, and the dot it had. Surprisingly it was a good hold in PVP.

I really hope CoT gets the animations right for the powers, the combat stance, and the effects. I recently saw a video of SoH and the effects looked so bad, they use way too many different effects per power, and the way the character moved was choppy and awkward.

I loved me some Kinetics on

I loved me some Kinetics on my Corruptors! Mind that I also double slotted everything for accuracy as a general rule. Even loved the much maligned Repel. Used properly it could turn me into a pocket tank just long enough to avert a teamwipe. (Carnie bosses looked better on the ground anyway.) I could, and did, Speed Boost folks in Mercy for HOURS. Being able to show new players how Super Speed and Super Jump (Inertial Reduction) felt was very cool. For my purposes in Mercy, the fact that my /Kin powers did no damage was a plus. I could heal the new players and Fulcrum Shift them into the damage ceiling. Transference wasn't much use in Mercy, but folks fighting Deathsurge in Cap sure loved it! Plus the old combo of popping a blue inspiration and using Transference after a Fulcrum Shifted nuke never got old! For most of the game's life Siphon Speed was like an early travel power. Plus it let you dash in close for your own buffs and then away very quickly.

Kinetics as played by me was very much a buffing set. Yeah technically there were debuffs in there too, but most things I debuffed were only going to get off one more shot before dying anyway.

I'd have to agree. My favorite power set would have belong to my favorite character who I played from the announcement that COH was ending life to the moment that the servers shut down. She was a human-only peacebringer that could solo x8+4 (or whatever the max was) regular type missions. Her name was Dooooooommmmm (named because I knew she would be my last character, though I'm not sure of the number of o's and m's it actually was).

I still miss her :(

If we ever have special power sets like the ones for khelds....

Ah, well then lets see if I can articulate what it was about the set I mentioned that I loved.

Gravity Control
Well, Propel. Even with its ridiculously long animation, hell maybe even BECAUSE of the animation. I felt amazing to use that power. I mean, logically I knew that it wasn't doing THAT much damage, but it sure as hell felt like it. (This is all prior to the last wave of Gravity buffs. While the shorter animation did numerically improve the power, it lost a bit of the oomph, IMO.)

Oddly enough Gravity was one of the few control primaries that I never got to level 50 with. I had a really difficult time finding a secondary pairing that I liked with it. I tried */Rad, */Kin, */FF, */Dark, and */Time, but I dunno. As much as I loved the primary, I never loved the combination.

Storm Summoning
Another set that I loved, but never got to 50 with. Elementalism has always been one of my favorite power types in any IP/Game/Etc, and weather control is certainly near the top of that list for me. Also, my favorite X-man was always Storm, so yeah.

I also really liked that Steamy Mist type powers let me pseudo-stealth missions if I was careful with it. Plus, Flight has always been my favorite travel power thematically (with TP coming in a close second) and wind/sky/storm based powers just fit so nicely with it.

I think I had the same problem with Storm as I did Gravity, while I loved the set itself, I never really found a combination that I loved with it. Naturally I tried Electric Blast, but frankly Electric wasn't a great set in the first place (IMO YMMV), and the two sets didn't mechanically synergize AT ALL, which I must say really disappointed me.

Time Manipulation
Everything. Just, Everything. I really can't be more specific than that. I don't know that there was a single power in the set that I didn't love. Maybe the two single target powers? Time Crawl/Stop? I still liked them, but not as much? This was really the most perfect Support set to my notion. It wasn't purely offensive or purely defensive, didn't rely too heavily on its gimmick or a single mechanical theme. I even liked the sound effects, though I know some people hated them. /shrug

Fire Blast
This is a tricky one, as I think Fire is probably my least favorite elemental theme (mostly because it's been done to death IMO), plus I didn't really like Blasters. Since it was originally Blaster specific (before Corruptors were introduced, and I didn't much care for redside) that meant that I never really played it. Then it got proliferated to Defenders, and I fell in love. (It didn't hurt that Rain of Fire still did full Blaster level damage until that last update.)

Part of the reason I didn't like Blasters was because *I felt* that they didn't bring much to the table. They did damage, and that was it. The Fire Blast set was the same, it did damage... and that was it. So a Fire Blaster was an archetype that only did damage, with a set that only did damage. Ugh. Flip that to Defenders, which was an archetype that didn't do much damage, but brought much more to the table. Fire Blast gave them the ability to shift a bit more towards the damage they were a bit lacking in, it just really struck what was the perfect balance for me.

Ice Blast
As with Fire Blast, this was after proliferation to Defenders. What I really loved about Ice on Defenders was that it let me feel more Controller-y (made even better by the fact that my character was Dark Miasma/Ice Blast, so he was VERY controller-y). Also, Tar Patch + Ice Storm + Blizzard. MUAHAHAHAA

Radiation Blast
Honestly I just really loved Irradiate. It was fast to activate and the sound effects felt powerful. The rest of the set was fairly "Meh" to me; Neutrino Bolt was awful, laser eyes are tired, but Irradiate was f*kin awesome.

Water Blast
On the grand scale of elemental power themes, Water is the polar opposite to Fire for me. Easily my top pick. So of course I was THRILLED when the set was finally introduced to the game. It also added another attack set with a self heal, which I've always favored (Seriously I have a VERY hard time playing characters without some method of hitpoint recovery, even if they don't necessarily NEED it). As a healer at heart, I just really can't stand seeing a hitpoint bar that's not full. I also liked Water's gimmick (Tidal Power). It wasn't too rigid, nor did it feel like useless fluff.

Dark Melee
Massive self damage buffing AND a self heal AND Endurance recovery? Yes Please!

Electric Control
Ooof. Conductive Aura + Static Field? AHAHAHAHAHA, go go near total lockdown available at level 12. This was probably the soonest I ever switched a Controller to x8 difficulty. Just drop Static Field from out of LOS, then hop into the middle and let CA work its magic. Spam Chain Fences and Jolting Chain and laugh maniacally as huge groups of mobs flop around uselessly on the ground for your amusement.

I mean, sure it took FOR. EV. ER to kill anything, but it was so enjoyable that I never minded the pace. GOD I miss CoX.

Fortunata
I've always loved Psychic power themes, and a (near) Blaster that ALSO had over the top self defense? Sign me up.

Warshade
Just like Psi, Cosmic powers rank pretty highly for me as a theme. Plus you had all the good points listed above for why I liked Dark Melee, AND MORE! Plus Nova and Dwarf provided a decent amount of adaptability, though it was difficult to build for too much of that.

Willpower
I liked that this was a minimalist defense set graphically. It also wasn't too heavily reliant on a single mitigation type (though, jack of all trades, master of none). Also I liked sets that had additional endurance management tools, I was never very good at that (I think I had Stamina, Quick Recovery AND Physical Perfection, plus some of the End IO procs) so any set that includes additional resource management gets a + from me.

Street Justice
I came to CoH from a game that used style chains, so I really liked when CoH introduced a set that included such a mechanic (Dual Blades). However, having played CoH for a long time before Dual Blades got introduced, I'd been pretty fully converted to CoH's flexibility/customization and found the more rigid chains of DB a bit too restrictive. So when they introduced Street Justice, with its greater flexibility and the personal nostalgia it was just a sweet spot for me.

The multiple holds really helped with bosses.

Amen, and amen. I tended to stay at range with trash mobs. But damn, when the boss showed up, I loved that Sapper Blapper combo. Run in, Short Circuit, Power Sink, toggle Lightning Field on. Everybody's sapped, I'm full, and with the SO EndMod on every tick of Lightning Field, they're capped and they spend their last few seconds of existence trading measly Brawls with my Havoc Punches.

Thanks Oathboundone and

Thanks Oathboundone and Wolfgang for expanding on your posts.

Like I said, there is no wrong opinion of what makes a good set of powers. You can like the visuals or it's strength, versatility or single focus. It's all about what you personally enjoy.

Oathboundone brought up a few things I personally really love in sets. End management, synergy with class/primary/secondary and health recovery. I really want my character to be very self sufficient but still have strong teaming capabilities at the same time. Very good point.

Wolfgang also pointed out something I very much need in a set of powers, probably more than anything else. I need to enjoy the visuals first and foremost. I hated the visuals of most armor sets and avoided melee characters until we were first able to shut the visuals off and then later able to change them.
I too liked Spines but it wasn't until customization that I began to love the set. Just so you know Wolf, the two powers you were talking about in the set were Spine Burst (unless you meant the toggle then its Quills) and Ripper.

Here are mine. YMMV.

Here are mine. YMMV.

Blasters --
I had a bunch of blasters that I loved. My first blaster ever was Fire, and my Dual Pistols was outrageous. But my favorite blaster powerset was playing an Energy/Energy Blapper. Man, that was fun. I just -felt- like a superhero, but I was still fragile enough that it never got dull. I loved the animations, the effects, I even loved knockback. So fun.

Defenders --
I wasn't big into defenders, but I think the one I enjoyed the most (not necessarily the best one, and I never got her to 50) was my Bubbler. Force Field was awesome partly because of the visuals, but mostly because it changed the game so much. No healing... suddenly nobody was taking damage. It was high-maintenance, especially on a big team, but for me that made it all the more fun.

Scrappers --
I'll start with secondaries. I loved Super Reflexes. It may not have been "the best" of the sets, but I kept going back to it because I just loved the idea of not being hitable. And it worked great with a lot of the enhancements.
I think the first scrapper I took to 50 was Dual Blades. In the end, my favorite was probably Martial Arts, mostly for the animations, and again because it -felt- heroic.

Tank --
I don't think I ever got a tank to 50. Just not my AT. I think my favorite was the 'Sword and Board' combo of the Broadsword and Shield sets.

Controller --
Illusion. Hands down. My favorite powerset in the entire game. I LOVED Phantom Army, Spectral Wounds, Phantasm, and both styles of invisibility. I don't know how many different Illusionists I played, but it was at least five. I played the set differently from a lot of people. I did not use, or even take "Deceive". For me, it was about how to turn Illusion into a soloable, offensive powerset, and though for a lot of people Deceive was the set's signature power, I found it slow and unproductive, when I could just lock things down and kill them off quickly with the other powers in the set.

Corruptor --
Never really did much with Corruptors, so I have to pass on this one.

Brute --
Hard to say... probably Fire, just for the sense of rampage it gave.

Stalker --
I took a couple of Stalkers to 50, but my favorite powerset here was Katana. I can't really explain why, other than I found the aesthetics appealing. There was something about the "shing..." as you drew your katana before your strike that just felt cool.

Master Mind --
I tried I-don't-know-how-many Masterminds, but I don't think I got to 50 with any of them. Probably Ninjas were my favorite, just because they were, you know, ninjas.

Dominator --
Believe it or not, Ice. For some reason, my Ice Dom just wanted to be played. Most of my others sat on the shelf. It probably had more to do with that particular character than the set, but still, Ice was fun.

For a Blast Primary, Dual

For a Blast Primary, Dual Pistols had everything beat. No other set had as awesome visuals, infact I felt the other sets felt rather plain and boring in comparison. It was of course, sadly, the lowest in damage :(

For Debuff/Buff set, that goes to Time. Loved it! Dark was a close second! Got tired of Rad, just saw it everywhere.

Control Set it was a tie between Fire and Illusion. Just loved the pets.

Defense Set goes to Stalker Willpower. The only thing that could have made this set better, was if the defense was positional instead of typed defense, so it would REALLY feel like the concept! Defense (Reflexes)/Regen with some S/L/P Resist?! THAT IS SO MY CONCEPT! Had some Regen with the burst heal I preferred over the dumb "the more I'm surrounded, the more I heal"

Master Mind Primary...Demons!

Melee Set...so so many! Street Justice and Martial Arts needed to be combined for animations! Dual Blades because I loved loved LOVED my Red Cap Daggers! Staff Melee was awesome! Loved Energy Melee until they ruined my one animation, but always loved my pink glowy fists of destruction! Just couldn't play it anymore after they ruined it.

Yes! Spine Burst, Quills, and Ripper, and impale. My favorite of the set. Thanks.

Yes, Dual Pistols had incredible visuals. I remember when they previewed it at Pax (I think, might have been E3) and the cheer the video got when they finished off the fight with Executioner's Shot. I wish I could find the video of it cause unless you see it you have no idea how pumped the crowd was there.
The only thing I ever wished for Dual Pistols was options to make it look more John Woo instead of Equilibrium just to cover both the most cinematic animations of the set. I also wouldn't have turned my nose up at some good old 'Man with no name' western animations as well.
Still, the set looked great and I enjoyed it.

According to the staffer who

According to the staffer who animated Dual Pistols, he essentially wasn't animating PISTOLS on his first pass of the motions, but rather animating short swords or daggers or even a spear so as to get the "twirl and point FEEL" of the set down first. It was all about the choreography of motion of the entire avatar, rather than just pulling the trigger after pointing the weapon. Once the motions were cleaned up to his satisfaction using "pointy" melee objects in the hands, he simply replaced the objects with pistols and had them twirling around the trigger guard on the character's hands. So the baseline for the animations used by Dual Pistols was actually something more like a set of melee weapon katas where the character just happens to be using a pair of pistols instead.

Quote:

Hello! I'm Nelson, a character animator at Paragon Studios. I'd like to talk to you about one of the coolest projects I've ever worked on – the Dual Pistols Power Set for City of Heroes Going Rogue.

It's easy to make a sword look cool -- but how do you make firing a gun look cool when all you really do is pull a trigger?

Our vision of "Dual Pistols" was something flashy, stylish, badass and cool. It couldn't be just a guy holding two guns. It had to be awesome. I was waiting all my life for this chance. I'm originally from Hong Kong, so the movies of John Woo and the stunts of Chow Yun-Fat, Jacky Chan, and Jet Li live within my blood! The gears in my brain started to spin, and I was like "yeah baby, bring it on!!" We were going to go John Woo.

For the next couple weeks, I did nothing but look for dual pistol references. I watched a lot of old movies, went through YouTube to find cool action clips, read a lot of comic books and read even more manga. (What a great job I have!)

One of the biggest challenges in making the Dual Pistols Power Set is the choreography design. Unlike swinging a sword, which includes a lot of body motion, firing a pistol only requires one finger. Not to mention we had to create nine different powers for the entire Dual Pistols Power Set, each with a unique animation. My first approach was to study the strong poses from classic films such as Hard-Boiled and Face-Off.

An equation I use to help me design is Good Animation = The Right Pose at the Right Time.

Pointing your gun at the enemy and firing is boring. But spread out the legs, keep the hips low, thrust the gun forward as if you are sticking out a sword and then firing off your pistol... that makes for great animation!!

To further exaggerate the power, the idea of Gun Fu was discussed. In the realm of gaming, making combat seem realistic isn't my main concern. I want to make fighting look amazing. I want to emphasize the beauty of combat – bullet ballet, gymnastic gunplay, curving bullets – all of these became my inspirations.

As an example, the "Piercing Rounds" Dual Pistols power allows the user to "fire a pistol with deadly precision in a very narrow cone and piercing up to three enemies."

How was I going to visually present the idea of "deadly precision?" I decided to treat the pistol as a spear, have the player toss the gun into the air, turn his body around, grab the gun back into his hand, and thrust out with the arms at the same time as the pistols fire. Is it practical to fire a pistol this way? No. does it look badass? Hell yeah!!

For Gun Fu inspiration, the movie "Equilibrium" was recommended by many people. The Gun Fu combat in the movie is totally over the top, so it was perfect for me. I felt like the acrobatic fight scenes were meant to be put in a video game, and it later became one of my inspirations for my favorite power, "Hail of Bullets."

Movies weren't enough though so I ended up spending a lot of time acting out the animation too. Paragon bought us some air guns for "research" and I even videotaped myself trying all of the animations until I was finally happy with the poses and timing. When you see the Dual Pistols animation in-game, that's actually me!

If you want to know more about how we made City of Heroes Going Rogue, come by our Facebook fan page, where we'll keep posting more information about the development process. Thanks!

Shadow maul was (I think) the rapid fire punching bag attack that was just so hilarious - but really effective. with the bonus power of the same name I could use that twice in a row and I loved every minute of it. add life drain to the mix and it was just golden!

I was afraid dual pistols would come out looking like Assault Rifle which was such a boring set. All the blast sets pretty much were imo. I wanted a gun fu set and outside of a nice pistol whip, that set was AWESOME!

Yeah DP was terrible in PVP. At least from what I remember. It took too long and missed a lot. Maybe I just didn't play it right.

Dual Pistols damage was

Dual Pistols damage was supposed to hinge on the 'Swap Ammo' power, as in using the right ammo for the right enemy. The problem was that the ammo didn't add enough damage to make up for it's low DPS and the promised versatility was kinda lacking.
Dual Pistols was the 69 Firebird set, looks pretty good but isn't as fast as a Mustang or Camaro.

My Storm/Dual Pistols

My Storm/Dual Pistols Defender ... Sidhe Bang ... who was (of course) Irish, wore a green/white plaid patterned jacket and pleated skirt for a "proper" look of Schoolgirl With GUNS ... was one of my breakout character concepts that just made all the difference in Task Forces, to the shock and amazement of the people I was playing with. While we're standing around waiting for the TF to fill up, people are chatting and inspecting power sets and so on, and I'd occasionally get some snarky/snide comments about how I'd somehow managed to pick the worst of both worlds (Dual Pistols on a Defender) and that other people weren't expecting me to contribute much. It wasn't hard to tell that people thought they'd need to "carry" me through the TF, since they couldn't expect all that much from me (especially given my costuming choice!).

Then we'd actually start the TF ... and Sidhe Bang quickly became the "rock" that everything else orbited around ... the other PCs, the NPCs ... everything. Tank getting overwhelmed? Turn on HERDicane and dive in to blow them all away. Huge pile of mobs in a confined space? Turn on HERDicane and To Hit Debuff them into the floor in a corner they can't escape from. Summon clouds that blast stuff with lightning bolts! Use Gale (slotted with a Knockback set!) to toss NPCs around like broken ragdolls. And the entire time, there is the sound of almost non-stop gunfire coming from Sidhe Bang as she whirls like an engine of destruction through the eye of the chaos she created, leaving broken bodies in her wake.

There was one Moonfire TF I was on where by the time we were getting towards the end of the TF, I had multiple other Players openly and in private tells saying that after watching what I could do, they had to try out Storm/Dual Pistols for themselves since it just looked like way too much FUN! Yeah, the damage throughput wasn't the most incredible in the game, but when your opposition is HELPLESS before you, that isn't such a big deal anymore. I even got some of them "trained" to understand that if they wanted to avoid faceplanting, all they had to do was fall back into the swirling Hurricane to minimize their incoming damage.

On a different TF (I forget which one), there was this one time when we got to this big open room that must have had something like 30-40 mobs in it, and rather than try to pull this apart, the Aggro Magnet just dove in (foolishly, as it turned out) and got the attention of the entire room. Sort of a LEEROY JENKINS! move. Everyone else, of course, dove in to help and ... the Aggro Magnet went down (of course), leaving the rest of us to deal with all these angry mobs that wanted to harm us mightily. Feeling the tide of battle turning against us, I turned on Hurricane (slotted with a To Hit Debuff IO Set to maximize its debuffing power) and fell back into a choke point (a doorway) and tried to get everyone else to fall back into my protective sphere of Debuff and Knockback. We then spent the next several MINUTES trying to burn down the humongous pile of aggro that had been unleashed upon us, and amazingly ... we didn't wipe. We only lost a couple (our Aggro Magnet and someone who lost it to Scrapperlock), and after that performance I basically had the loyalty of the entire team for saving them from being overrun. They kinda ... learned ... that wherever the HERDicane was running was a Safe Zone to be in.

I had a LOT of fun playing Sidhe Bang. It was a character concept that shouldn't have worked out anywhere NEAR as well as it did, but her presence in any team was absolutely game changing. Truly, she lived and thrived in the eye of the Storm of Bullets. *^_^*

For me, it's simple: Regen.

For me, it's simple: Regen. Because tanking Hami; tanking Mako; tanking Imperius; solo-ing all the things, and this before IOs. After IOs it just became ridiculous. Almost as bad as pre-i3. Never got around to all the extra things people talk about like Masteries (or whatever) and Incarnates, but I can imagine what it will have been like...

It was part curiosity, part nostalgia and part information. Let the devs see what you found fun in a set so they can try and recreate that fun.

I had fun with Defender Force Fields. At the time it wasn't quite as common as the other sets. It was visually appealing and you could see it from way far away. Other players could quickly & easily grasp what was going on and grok your contribution to their success. Plus you could drive by buff and it wouldn't screw up their XP. In certain situations I really enjoyed Force Bubble (or was it Repulsion Field? I don't remember the name). Either to corral a bunch of baddies in a corner so a teammate could burn them down or to just provide an exclusion zone.

I also used the Leadership set on a few characters (usually defenders). If I wasn't a primary damage dealer I liked being a force multiplier. It allowed a player to fill in other character's gaps in defense or accuracy to get them closer to peak performance and keep pace on whatever we were doing.

Super Strength on my tank felt right. The animations were measured and the impacts looked and sounded 'right' to me. I could imagine that my character was laying a beat down and the powerset matched my vision.

In a similar vein, my Stone/Stone tank had that balance of animation and sound effects that was very satisfying. I didn't wholly enjoy the graphics as it sometimes looked like your character was a mud/dirt demon instead of a stone-y megalith. I enjoyed the sounds and the weight of the stone melee animations. I was happy to just jog up and down the street and thump everything in sight.

Oh yeah - Gravity was awesome too. Great fun to throw wrecked cars at villains! And Wormhole - I loved using it to spit groups of enemies out of a wall. It certainly was an interesting way to pull enemies when there was no tank on the team lol.

Leadership I also used extensively - one or more of the powers found their way into many of my characters if there was space, even the non-support ones.

One of my favs was the mastermind thugs set. I would ignore all the support powers and shoot pistols along with the guys (lets face it...you can always replace a thug).

I especially enjoyed the Power "Gang Warfare." 10 thugs would pop in shooting everything that moved. they always got agro and the boys and I were able to take out a boss with ease. it was a great way to ruin a lot of AI battle plans.

I loved my masterminds.
