Hero favorites that are not genrally the most popular

I just thought I would throw this out. Does anyone have some favorite heroes from comics that are not necessarily the big fan favorites. For me ( I'm more a Marvel comics person) I always liked Moon Knight. He is more or less Marvel's version of Batman but he does stray farther to the crazy side. As I collected in my early days, for some reason I was always drawn to Cloak and Dagger as well.

One of my non-Marvel favorites (not known by many) was a series called Elementals. It was written by Bill Willingham who would later write the Fables series. It was a group of 4 people who had all recently died from one of the four elements (One in a fire, one drowned, one buried in a rock slide and a pilot brought down in a bad wind storm). They all came back with the power of the element that killed them. It started off good but he later gave up the writing duties and it turned to garbage. Curiously, the villians from the first few issues were in a Villians and Vigilanties RPG adventure that he wrote prior to the comic.

Matt Wagner's Grendel is

Matt Wagner's Grendel is probably one of my favorites that isn't terribly well known, back when it was published by Comico then by Dark Horse. I had an opportunity quite a few years ago to pick up an original first issue locally but I curtailed my urge to splurge. I regret it to this day. Especially since I'm fairly certain the comic shop that had it isn't even in business anymore. I didn't particularly care for Hunter Rose (the original Grendel) but the later incarnations, such as Grendel-Prime during the War-Child storyline, had some good stuff.

Union was one from Image/WildStorm Productions (before imprinted by DC) that didn't have a super extensive run. What drew me to the character was something simple; his power baton wasn't inked with a outline/border and I enjoyed the rough kind of look to the art style.

And pretty much anything that Joe Mad(ureira) touches, like Battle Chasers, because he's fantastic.

I've always seemed to like

I've always seemed to like the heroes that either aren't hugely popular or don't even have their own title (or have one but not for long). Also, the characters that only show up in team books because they're not big enough for their own book. One of my favorites of all time in this category was The Demon Etrigan in DC. That comic (the one in the 90s) was written more for humor than plot or action but I liked the character nonetheless. Also Jack of Hearts in Marvel, along with virtually every team member that you knew was never getting their own book, except Hawkeye. I used to KILL me that they'd give Hawkeye a comic (for as long as he could sustain one) over some of the "not so big" characters I liked way more. Was this just because Green Arrow was popular? I have no idea.

my list:

The Demon
The Vision
Machine Man
The Gargoyle (No not the Grey Gargoyle, he was a villain, Gargoyle was a real Marvel character, look him)
Jack of Hearts
all of the culturally-diverse super friends (Samurai, El Dorado, Black Vulcan...)
Red Tornado
Mr. Miracle
The Paladin (from Marvel, have Stun Gun, will travel)
The Phantom Stranger
Morbius, the Living Vampire (sometimes good guy, sometimes bad guy)
The Black Cat
The Black Widow
Spider Woman
Son-of-Satan (which is a character they basically can't do anymore, sadly)

Also, while we're on the subject, I thought the original Night Shift was a good idea for a team book but a terrible lineup of characters. They were literally a bunch of idiots mostly with no real superpowers, but lots of costuming and schtick. Shroud was an unoriginal ripoff of another character from the same universe (Cloak) and he was the leader and the only super-powered one, and he was still terrible. Here's my list of people I would put on a team called the Night Shift, which I think is way better. Any 4-5 of these people would be a huge upgrade over the original, to me:

Blade
Morbius
Werewolf, by Night
The Black Cat
Hellcat
Spider Woman
The Gargoyle
Ghost Rider
Moon Knight
Moon Dragon
Dr. Strange
Son-of-Satan
Cloak and Dagger
The Prowler
The Thing

R.S.O. of Phoenix Rising

How not popular are we

How not popular are we talking? Among comic readers or the general public?

Like Grifter, Gen-13 or DV8? Would those be considered not popular (okay DV8 may be the least popular of those three mentioned).

What I did love and wish continued was The Tenth and Adrenalynn series from Tony Daniel. I even have a signed comic from Tony Daniel, but at this moment it escaped me if it was The Tenth with Adrenalynn on the cover and actual Adrenalynn comic :p

Cyber Force and Wetworks would also be on the list, but I have to admit, I didn't get into Wetworks as much as I wanted, because it's schedule was way to wonky at the time (as most Image titles were). Cyber Force though, started out as a pretty obvious X-Men copy, that started to get it's own feel and traction, then it sputtered, I believe due to the popularity of Witchblade and The Darkness.

I enjoyed Gen-13, and Grifter both in WildC.A.T.s and stand-alone series. What's not to like about the name Cole Cash with a great looking mask and guns guns guns?

I was so excited to see Grifter get a new series in the New 52, only to be sad that it felt sucky :p Which as someone who picked up his solo titles, I've found they always seem to give a terrible artist or writer the title. The same with Gambit solo titles. :p

WildC.A.T.s started out great and then went down hill with the team changes (imo). :(

Grifter always kind of struck me as the 'Gambit' of Image, which is probably why I liked him. I remember hanging out with my older cousin, and he just had comics thrown around his room. I picked one up at random off the floor and it was the first appearance of Gambit. I was a fan ever since. In other words, I liked him before it was cool. #Hipster

I didn't branch out much into Image/WildStorm, only picking up random issues when nothing interested me from Marvel and/or Dark Horse. Then I joined the military and didn't read anything for years. I've only really recently got back into comics haphazardly (playing Marvel Heroes prompted it), and that's mostly through Comixology. Things were good for a while with The Annihilation Wave, Plant Hulk/World War Hulk, the first Civil War, Secret Invasion, and then it's pretty much been downhill since with Marvel. C'est la vie.

Ultimate Spider-Man was great

Ultimate Spider-Man was great until they killed Peter. Check that out :)

Spider-Woman (my favorite main stream...>_> she may not be well known actually :p) I'm enjoying, even if I still have issues with her losing her iconic outfit. I keep hoping it will return, at the same time, I'm afraid me buying her comic as is, will mean they never return it. :/

I enjoyed The Once And Future

I enjoyed The Once And Future Juggernaut storyline because it showed that Cain Marko wasn't a complete ham-fisted moron. But, hey, change writers and everything reverts to form, so he's back to being an unfortunate victim of poor direction and story-telling.

I was a big fan of The Secret

I was a big fan of The Secret history. Really great story. I plowed through the 3 volumes of the Omnibus' in a weekend.

And of course everything in Astro City. That series for me represented what CoH really should have been in comic form. Great stories and amazing cover art. The inside art was not as flashy but the story more than made up for it.

For the flashy stuff I was more into Marvel / Image comics. I still have my Spiderman #1 and Spawn #1 signed by Todd McFarlane. Art in comics is really important to me. If the art doesn't catch my attention I probably won't read it.

P.S. Joe Mad Battlechasers can't wait for more.

I'm looking forward to the Battlechasers: Nightwar game to come out from Airship Syndicate, which Joe Mad is a part of.

Yup i backed his Kickstarter campaign for Battlechasers. I've been a fan of Joe Mad since his run on Age of Apocalypse way back when. And of course the Darksiders games.

Niiice. I enjoyed the Darksider games too, and I was bummed when THQ went under. I remember watching them auction off their property and, surprisingly, the Darksider IP was one of the last ones to go. I did recently see that they're finally putting out a third game.

I've been so sheltered. Well

I've been so sheltered. Well comics were never gonna happen in my house. A lot of things weren't going to happen in my house but some how gaming was cool? Comics in general were not popular in my area. There was one comic shop and it was 30 minutes away. I went in once when my friends mom brought us there. He got what he wanted and was out. 3 minutes. I don't understand why I never pushed harder to get into comics I loved the animated series X-men and Batman:TAS were probably my favorite TV shows.

Anyway, my favorite non-prime hero, as non-prime as I ever knew about, was Gambit. He had his little bit in the intro but for most of the shows played a minor role if he was on screen at all. For the villain, Ventriloquist and Scarface. I don't know why but the duality of the character I really enjoyed. It was particularly well done in the newer animated series.

I'm a huge Mera fan. I think

I'm a huge Mera fan. I think she next to WW is the most kickass female character in the DCU. I really like Songbird from the Thunderbolts as well. Geo-Force is another B-List favorite.

Well, the Blue Beetle I've

Well, the Blue Beetle I've read of most in the past couple months is Harry Dresden's old-style VW, which was once blue. He named it after the super hero seen occasionally on Sesame Street. And IIRC, the next time any of the D.C. heroes by that name are mentioned in that series, it'll be the first.

Also, to the best of my knowledge, while the company owned by one of the D.C. Blue Beetles (Ted Kord) has appeared in the Arrowverse, the Blue Beetle hasn't.

But yes, a favorite, but not popular.

My favs would be Nova

My favs would be Nova (Richard Rider, the original), Captain Mar-Vell, WildC.A.T.S (which, I agree with Brand X was great the start then went downhill....fast), The New Warriors (the original group), ummmm...who else...Ms Marvel/Warbird/Carol Danvers (but I cant seem to get into her new Captain Marvel incarnation...but I loved the Warbird look). There was a black an white book that was called Fusion (based in space..not really superheroes though).
