I like to remember what the day is really all about - those who made the ultimate sacrifice to ensure our freedom to complain about everything, as we recline with our smartphones and computers and watch our high-def tv's. I will typically make a point of watching a movie that depicts the struggles that were made against true tyranny, and I will also give thanks that my father, a veteran of two wars, was one of the fortunate ones.

We don't have memorial day in France ^^ But, this is the ascension week-end (something religious) with friday as a free day ^^ so... going to the sea and the beach ! :)

As memorial day is based on the end of the US Civil War, there is no reason other nations should hold it. The root was to remember the sacrifices made to preserve the union from those who would dissolve it.

For a Canadian perspective on Memorial Day, we actually do have a parallel that isn't Remembrance Day. As Nate said, it's based on the end of the US Civil War, which is a *very* particular bit of history. While Canada never had a civil war of the sort that the United States largely defined, we had several rebellions and revolutions prior to our Confederation, which were nearly as violent as what was witnessed during the American Revolution. Except that while the rebels lost, their grievances which lead to their rebellion were not only received and heard, but resulted in the implementation of measures to properly respond. Hence why our equivalent to "Life, Liberty and the pursuit of happiness" is "Peace, Order, and Good Government."
What many don't seem to realize is that there were Canadians involved on both sides of the US Civil War, ranging from the act of selling weapons and support to both sides, to actually being involved in the fighting. I have the greatest of respects for what Memorial Day truly is, because I daresay that the history of the US and my own nation are so thoroughly entwined that one may appropriately call them siblings. That being said, I think the US would benefit significantly from having a symbol like our Poppy.
It is only when we stand up, with all our failings and sufferings, and try to support others rather than withdraw into ourselves, that we can fully live the life of community.

Triggerfish sauteed in Spanish olive oil, butter, white wine and lemon juice and then blackened in Greek spices.
Diced turnips lightly sauteed in olive oil, Italian herbs and lemon juice.
Whole fresh Brussels sprouts medium sauteed in butter and white balsamic vinegar.
Was feeling fancy :P. Normally grilled burgers and potato chips would have been on the menu.
