PvP and PvE

I assume, that is I am to assume, that PvP will would similar to CoH and CoV as in no open world PvP unless it is a designated area? And even then the confusing part is we are Titans not heroes or villains, just making our own stories and 'life' choices as we play as to who our character shall be. I was just curious if there is any PvP thoughts going on in this stage and if so what were they? I can live with out PvP ESPECIALLY in a coh/v environment however since CoH's death I have made many more friends across many mmo's and a lot of them prefer having PvP open world or just an option that is pleasant. Now if there is no PvP ideals going on that fine, don't want it to end up like Global Agenda where every one cried about wanting open world PvE and then causing the games death when the PvP was amazingly fun. Sorry I have a habit of typing what I think as I think it which isn't great for trying to ask what i wish to ask, is there a PvP base/idea floating around and if so might i have some information on it to share with my friends or is it too early to say? And as always have a great day!

Have a nice day!

From what I can tell, toons

From what I can tell, toons of all alignments might well be walking around in the same areas, mingling among each other. Then, if you're on an instance that is marked for open world PvP, you could attack other people, and if you're on the "no PvP" instance, you cannot attack other players, period. Lastly, I would assume there will be arena-type stuff that people can do as contained PvP via matching people with other people for such.

I personally do not like the flick on flick off pvp since there will be people who would love to set themselves up for ideal ambushes on people not expecting them to just turn it on while they are surrounded by a group.

Have a nice day!

No no - there will be specific instances/shards of a zone that will be set for permanent PVP - a zone will not "flick over" suddenly to PVP. There will be no ganking in a normal PVE zone. If you want to do battle with other players in the open world you will have to voluntarily switch to, I don't know, "Phoenix Plaza (PVP) #3" or whatever.

Based on your signature block and interest in PvP, you wouldn't happen to have been in HVND in the olden days of CoH/V, would you, @dell56v?

Sorry for the long delay in reply didbt see the email notification, but i do not recall what HVND was, my stance on pvp is more darksouls "skill" reaction based. As far as coh/cov is concerned i did more pit fights with enemy badges than anything. But i did roam some pvp areas for some duels. As to my signature block: I really just like to try and make people happy. Or atleast brighten a gloomy day for someone.

Right on. Have A Nice Day (HVND) was a PvP-centric SG on Champion. I can't say I had many positive experiences with PvP over the years across various games, but the ones I did have early on in CoH involved HVND as classy, helpful players.

Well I would of loved to have experienced that, but I was way more into helping low levels and new roleplayers with a open-minded kind look on them. Plus I played Triumph till I learned Virtue was the rp server so not sure if they were on my server.

Naw, they were on Champion in the early years and they kind of dwindled away over time. I don't think they were really even around when stuff like PvPEC formed up to host events across the servers to promote PvP.

Why do you think everyone will be a hero?

As what Empyrean said, not all of us are planning to play heroes. Im planning to play a "grey" character so they might have some "hero" and "villain" allies and enemies.

Why do you think everyone will be a hero?

Last I recall reading, there won't be villains at the start.

Though, I could be mixing up a comment from another game, however, I could swear it was here on these forums.

Hero, Villain, etc.. are labels applied to describe your character as part of the tri-axis alignment.

The CoX player base, taken as a whole, played heroes a lot more than villains. A lot of people had characters of both alignments, like me, and a lot of us, like me, played the villains almost never and the heroes like every day. Posi even commented on that as being one of the contributing factors to development being slow, that they had to do everything twice, one version for blueside, one for redside and there wasn't even CLOSE to equal participation in both sides among players.

I think the division of blue vs redside players had more to do with the fact that CoV was released later as a paid expansion.

As for slow development, posi clarified that they had to divide development between essentially two games. If they could do it again he would have done things like they way they did in Praetoria, with both sides working in the same area with only the writing being the division between the sides.

I'm still convinced most

I'm still convinced most would rather play the hero. :p Even in TOR there seems to be less evil Imperials and more LS Imperials, with some just picking dark side to say they did it dark sided.

However, when it comes to CoT it will be interesting to see how the players go. I expect more on the hero side of things rather than villain side though.

Hero, Anti-Hero, Lovable Rogue will all beat out straight villains I believe.

Probably.
But that division won't be as apparent as in CoH. In fact I think the extremes will be the least common and most characters will fall somewhere in the middle.

My characters was almost exclusively vigilante/rogue when GR launched. Being either of those alignments gave me access to both sides of the game. Sure, I switched to full Villain for the Patron powers, but then immediately back to Rogue or Vigilante so I could bring those characters to whatever content I cared to play that day/night. I did play far more heroes in the beginning, but towards the end I warmed up to redside ATs quite a bit, especially the VEAT.

I can attest to this... though really going Lightside on an Imperial you were still obviously a villain, you just weren't a mustache twirling, mine-is-an-evil-laughing caricature of evil, which Darkside Imp choices tended to be. Pragmatic villainy, if you will.

Seriously, one quest to put down a slave revolt see you tasked with poisoning the slaves' water supply, your choices are [Lightside]Put lots of poison in so the slaves die right away, OR [Darkside] put just enough poison in so that the slaves spend week suffering and writhing in agony before they eventually succumb.

Light Imperial wasn't GOOD, it just wasn't self defeatingly evil for no reason other than being evil MUAHAHAHAHA!

Arguably I found it to be the opposite on Republic side. The Light choices were often so ridiculously diversionarily benevolent as to be impractical. "Well, I'm here to stop a WORLD DESTROYING EVENT the Sith Emperor plans to use as a catalyst to DESTROY THE ENTIRE GALAXY, but yes, sure I'll allow his agents to divert me into an obvious trap in order to save the half a dozen colonists some rando lackey has trapped over on the other side of the map and thus DIRECTLY JEOPARDIZING THE FATE OF TRILLIONS OF INNOCENT PEOPLE, instead of accepting them as a regrettable loss for the greater good. No problem."

Yes. That exact scenario plays out in the Jedi Knight storyline.

I think that I generally prefer to play somewhere in the middle.

I didn't play any of the Mass Effect games, so the first real one I played that had multiple endings in regards to the path taken and choices made was Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne. Great game, and come to find out, I also tend to gravitate towards the middle where some may say is the greyer morality area.

Yes. A LS option like that would often have you going "What?" however, the idea was doing that, you could still save everyone. Why it was the LS choice. One just had to believe they could.

What's funny, is the first Republic Flashpoint, has you get Dark Side for risking everyone's life at the cost of a few, which if you do, you know the ship survives.

Later in Trooper story, if you sacrifice one NPC for a 100% chance to save the rest, you get Light Side. :p

Even sacrifice a few possible cyber terrorists for the greater good (and orders) was a Dark Side choice, and it happened earlier in Trooper story line.

Which leaves you to the one spot where you go "WTF?! This is always a DS choice before!" :p

I saw a map of the world as

I saw a map of the world as to the ratios of light to dark side in TOR in each country/region. Dark side/Empire was about 55-60% in the US and Europe and a few other places, while it was reversed in most of the rest of the world.

It occurred to me that people who were not living in freedom (or were a nominal democracy but it was highly corrupt all the way down to the DMV people) had no real yen to play evil online, too.

The good side had meaning, where enjoying playing evil was a luxury of not living in an Empire.

That, Gorgon, certainly

That, Gorgon, certainly matches what I read from a few sociology articles about heroes and superheroes in popular story. When times are difficult, and when government and other institutions are perceived as corrupt, hero stories flourish. Even the darker, roguish "fighting in the shadows against oppression" type of heroes are more appealing. It was certainly more complex than that, but the basic finding was that stories needed to give hope, and more heroic attributes were sought when more hope was needed.
