A place for me to toss out artsy type stuff and ... things... and ... stuff. I've been working on my art here and there for a couple years now.
I started - and for the most part continue to try to do one piece a day, every day, and never put in more than 3 days on anything, so a lot of my stuff I really would not damage anyones retinas by displaying here.
Some of it, I'll hit a trigger with and keep going and refining and so my better stuff I'll post here, on deviant, on behance, face book... pretty much anywhere. I am, by no means an artist - I just enjoy the heck out of it and do my best, so here's my stuff. Kinda Spartan right now - but I'll add more as I go.
Okay rather than drop stuff off in places where it's not supposed to go... :) (Extremely guilty of that...)
Figured I'd start dropping off stuff here.
Here is something I've been working on for a while. Mary Marvel... need to clean up the neckline ... but almost done.

good stuff...I love the vintage vibe I get from your work. :)

Yeah, I am guilty of having a love of the 30s, 40s and 60s posters. Which is odd because as a reader I prefer modern comics. But there is something about the older stuff that's so sincere - nothing quite like the look of it.
Modern comic arts are often flat or they have this very plastic/artificial 3D to them, and that's a good look also -- but they're colder, and lifeless. In the retro eras people weren't all muscles ripping out and they had flaws. They played with lighting - which we almost never do today. They were just as artificial mind you, more so, they often had this studio lighting thing going for them.
A lot of my favorite stuff - like the Mary Marvel started out from using a couple old 1940s unknown starlets as reference. Originally that was an actress who was in Julius Ceasar with Marlon Brando, and Dawn Wells (from Giligan's Island) in a toga from some other 50s roman gladiator movie. It needs a lot of work in matching the head/face up but it's getting there.
agreed for the most part, although I do think it depends on the artist for the modern stuff.
my only question is when can I throw some money at ya for work! >:)

It will be a long while before I charge people money for what I do. :) At least for this kind of work. But I do thank you for the compliment. :)
I like your style november.

I openly admit - I have total art ADHD. :) Was just as bad in the game - had like 50 toons I'd created and only 3 50s. I'd get bored leveling them and then create another ... and another...
The first step in dealing with your art problem is admitting that you - Ooh, nice!

Yeah well originally I wanted to build a Storm for the hurricane which was hella fun - just slot her up so anything that touched her couldn't hit and you were good to go. Later rebuilt her as a Electric Blaster which wasn't as fun.
Backstory on her was she was a Weather reporter that had been reporting live in Terra Volta when a Respec mission went bad. Which... was kind of the truth. I got the idea for her during a respec mission after seeing how effective a good Storm was in guarding the core. After that she was my Go-To toon for respecs - once I had freezing rain, hurricane up ... I could pretty much protect the core from anything and let everyone just kill kill kill kill. Down side was I just had to have enough blues to keep her upright. :D

That's a very powerful torso, you have started. Might need a tiny bit more hip... on her right side? And I really like the mantle/collar bit. And that's a super face!
Be Well!
Fireheart
Yeah... She's a bit too Batman in the torso. I give you that, and there's a issue with the legs that needs surgery as well. :D. I'll try backing it off and going more for a less forceful line structure below as well.
Actually, I LIKE a powerful torso on some women. Dancers and gymnasts have that.
My only 'criticism' was the leg-hip-waist line, which seemed slightly out of balance. Muscles are Good! as long as they're appropriate. Not everyone has to be pixie-slim.
Be Well!
Fireheart
Agreed, but the much darker tone didn't fit in with the face and it gives too much emphasis on the body with the darker tones and thicker lines... backed off things a bit here and that seems to have helped some

I'm assuming you mean the physical right/left and not the visual?
Visually- the right you can see from the progressions started waaaay too far over. In a lot of ways her torso is too big. That's a common problem I have. When I'm drawing I zoom in - work on an area - zoom out. Great for faces and detail work. But it tends to really toss things off on scales of body parts in the whole of the form.
Once I get a basic guide area - then I'll do what I'm doing now which is to work on it pulled (zoomed) out where I can see the whole of it. One of the things I've been trying to do more and more is try to walk that line between what is realistic - and what is superhero like. For that I love the old pin-up girl art from the 40's and 50's and even 60's. If you've ever seen the refrence models used for some of those it's really neat the way they did what they did.
Not to saying everyone isn't beautiful - but we seem to think body modification started with photoshop. It REALLY didn't. :D I think Queens were probably the first to get a full re-touch by some of the Dutch Masters.
Anyway - I am going to try to use color and shading to give them more depth and life like quality that match. Haven't gotten there. Like the cape - I'm playing with like 4 ideas in my head.
The body structure will get less 80's work out queen and more realistic as well. But the original reference for torso was some bodybuilder from 88 who had a pose I wanted that matched up with the facial / head pose I wanted, add the cheeks of marylinn Monroe the eyes of rita Hayward and the hair and mouth from Donna Malone?(not sure - she was a tv actress with a few films in the 50s), sides of cheeks into forehead and jaw are just glue lines and smoothing so it's not all Frankenstein... 10 minutes of photoshop and reference done. :D
Yup - that's the direction this is going. Maybe not quite that far toned back - but pretty close is what was in my head. Since I lack the skill to just translate what I'm thinking to paper directly - I go out and get cutouts of actual people / models and work from there. I have an idea - just I see a waist or a face or a set of legs. I almost never have a complete vision of it all bottom to top in my head. Just a look I want to try to do.
That's a big part of why I never say I'm an artist. My vision is very limited in that regard. I'm a great technician - but real artists have visions strong enough to hold in their mind. Too much ADHD in my head for that. :D
My original model for the pose and form (torso and legs) was a body builder from the 80's that had the pose I wanted. I tend to be very literal when I copy musculature- she's very Batman as I said and I need to work that back. The head and face are ... softer. Warmer I guess. When I was putting it together and I had this kind of pastiche of a face, even though I still needed to do the perspective and shapes to the scales I needed - I was like - "Yeah - this is awesome!" and that's how I knew I had that. I had the expression I wanted and that locked in for me.
Body was like... hmmm... gymnast... no.. boxer... closer... wait... who dat? Close enough. Never got the "yeah this is it" moment. It's a good pose and it fits but it's never locked in. Maybe when the kit gloves are on... we'll see.
I'm trying to find the part where MN actually asks for critique, constructive or otherwise. I'm not saying he minds (I'm guessing he will say he doesn't mind) most artists do want to hear what others think of their work or they would not be posting it but there is a difference between that and actively asking for or seeking out criticism/critique in order to improve one's craft. Not sure exactly what you were saying here - but I always like criticisms. Well, let's adjust that - no one likes criticism, no one does. But as far as accepting it - I accept criticisms always. I may not agree with them - and so it's up to me to ignore them or not. :D
I wouldn't put it up here if I didn't want people to give me input and tell me what they think. I still don't think of myself as an artist but I'll never get to be one if I don't learn and get input.
Oh my ... did I come off like that? No, no, no.... no such thing as undesired feedback. Especially not from you. Okay? Feedbacks always good.
Now I might not always agree with it, or I may have a reason for doing what I do, or ... I may simply lack the skill needed to pull off something. But you really really have to work to give me feedback that I don't want.
Got it! Feedback will not be stopped then

Sorry for not replying in ... forever. :( Work work work work... you know the drill.
But I would never be offended by anything DD said. She's awesome so respect her and everyone here's opinion.
I'm not particularly offended by anyone so ... it's all good. And my self deprecation is more a question of seeing the failings I have and knowing I have a long way to go for where I want to be. You set the bar high -- you achieve more. Its a philosophy I've always had.
I look at the stuff I have here and as digital art goes - not soo bad. But it's not where I want to be. I think all of us are that way to some extent.
I am really uncomfortable about praise for things that I know are not my best effort. Keep in mind, for me, I started down the path of doing artwork mostly to get my skills up for work. I enjoy it, love it really, but it's just a bit of skill building and fun. So it's not a driving force for me that for some people it is. And I know for those people who are artists - people who want to do this for more than just a scribble or a hobbyist like me, they work really hard at it.
They earn the title. Now, not everyone is that way about the title - some people are not sensitive about it, and they do it as much as a hobby - like me. But for others, they really put all they have into it and I have to respect that. They earn every drop of sweat they put into their art.
So for me to just flippantly drop the word out there and include myself into the work of people who really have given themselves to their art is - kind of rude. I mean, if I stopped doing this tomorrow I'd miss it but it's not like its going to crush a personal dream. For someone who loves art - or music or anything - you don't do that. We all have dreams and aspirations. Some will be great at them, others not so much. But always respect the dream, yknow?
I might go full on artist some day but I really don't have the kind of... visual not even sure how to describe it... but I see people who have it, and I know I don't. Not yet. I might but it will be a while.
But I appreciate everyones input and criticisms. :D Can't get better without it. So it's all helpful.
Annndd... on that long winded speech... going back to drawin's an stuffs.. :)

Hehehe... ironically enough you are dead on correct. I saw this lock and had the design stuck in my head and ... well...

As I get more done I'll drift from the design a bit but it was a great place to start from...

Nope, I saw the keyhole, but I didn't want to make too much of it.
That's a pretty cool lock, though.

I guess I should have mentioned it before, but the lady has no hips. I understand 'slender', but then she wouldn't have such broad shoulders?
Be Well!
Fireheart
Shes walking. Right leg is in the foreground, just hasn't been shaded yet to show depth. methinks. :)
So her hips are not only to the side, but right hip is sticking out from, and left hip is sorta hidden more because of her Bone structure. Hmm... this is Too detailed. Must be using a photo of a real model?!? ;)
It is a real human, the shoulders are more from the bizarre cloak. I was going for this kind of Mr. Sinister thing - which gives the impression that it's way out of balance. Here's the starting point from the original - which was a run way model that had a great confident walk.
Once I started on the armor - which was a look I really wanted - I think someone mentioned Ming - but that whole Mr. Sinister, Ming the Merciless, Dr. Strange cloak and head gear thing mixed with a bit of Big Barda / Wonder Woman was kind of where I was headed.
Right hip is definitely too far inward. Should be matched up with her thumb - where it was when I started and she was blonde... and going to have more of a cat suit fit...

I'll keep at it ... here's an update with the hips reworked a bit.

Looking good.
Izzy, I was a massage therapist, I know how the bones and muscles look, I have xray-vision. *grin* So, I could see that her hips were turned by motion, but still noticed that there wasn't enough.

Thanks. My son created this character when he was... about 10. Before he was playing City of Heroes or even knew about it. We've talked about creating a comic book forever, and I've taken a few bashes at drawing him before but never really got across what I wanted in it.
This is about the closest I've come so far.

Follow up to Spacehawk... some work on the Costumed version. Very rough but we're getting there.

Been playing with textures this week - well learning more about the look and feel of them. The sort of pleather latex look - takes a bit to do, but getting the hang of it. Using a blurred edge water color digital brush.

Hey Fireheart,
For some reason, Spacehawk reminds me of Starlight Saint in theme...
So, you and MN's son must think similarly...
just a thought...

I like the feel of the characters here, the retro is cool...
makes me want to pull up my stuff and start making more characters, but school just takes too much time...
still...
keep up the good work man...

I can see the resemblance, but Starlight Saint started out as 'evil Indiana Jones'... just a wee bit different, right? *grin*

Was moving and ... had a lot of stuff going on when you posted this. But if you still need a hand let me know. You can always reach me at www.rjakobson.com - always has my current email and phone, and I never mind people reaching out.
Back.. well mostly... getting back. Got my office set up, and a few hours here and there to play around now.
Was thinking it would be cool to do a kind of Fire/Earth/Air (aka Sandman) kind of character and came up with NG2... aka "Sahara".
NG2 by rjakobson, on Flickr
She looks to have a 'tanker-torso'. Powerful. I could see a sand-based Earth/Fire (Air) Tanker. That would play well.
Lovely art, sir.

Fireheart
Oh crap... I left? Damn cheap batteries from Korea! Must have zoned out there... :)
Okay... here's where I'm going with this... Nebbish of an accountant type who builds a supersuit that lets him produce bubble force fields because... I was a bubbler and I miss it. :)
The Bubbler by rjakobson, on Flickr
Well, I suppose a 4-month Nap is normal enough. I didn't think I'd like Bubbling, until I tried it with a friend and we made twin FF/Energy Defenders, who we played entirely in Turbo-Scrapper-mode. Amazing how aggressive you can get away with being, when you've got dual bubbles going.
Be Well!
Fireheart
Yeah, I was a Mind/Bubble troller from the very early days before all the buffs and nerfs. Stayed that way in my primary till my final days. :) Good times. Remember back before they nerfed the heck out of Mass Sleep and Mass Confuse and Personal Force Field. The tank's would taunt and we'd bubble'm up - keep them from holds mostly, they'd pull a massive mob to a dumpster and we'd lock'em down - have them hit'em with fire. Wash, rinse, repeat.
We killed more Ninja's than all the Chinese Dynasty's combined. (And yes, I know... Ninjas are not Chinese. ;)) Good times.

Ok... so I has not died. That was a rumor, and it was perpetuated by evil forces who... you get the idea.
No, actually I've been a bit busy.
Although I did hear some news recently which got me to drawing, cause I went slightly nuclear when I heard about Statesman being used by NCSoft to sell stuff... So this is kinda my tribute to that feeling... still needs a lot of work I'll finish it over next few weeks. Was nice to do some inking, haven't done that in a while.

Warburg... nah... that's Crey's Folly. :) Used to go there, have my "team" stand outside the fence - grab a tank, light him up, power him down, and let the monkey's grab all the XP.
Wash - Rinse - Repeat...
Then for fun, we'd go kill Ninjas.
