Small thing, but it would alleviate some aggravating problems when moving through the forums. When one goes to click the -Forums text link at the upper left to go back to the overall top view, it's really quite easy for the mouse pointer to pop a bit too high and drop down the 'Welcome to Titan City' links.
If there were just a bit more space between the two it might go a long way to helping avoid that (and, yes, I admit I had that Titan City link drop down on me two or three times before I snuck up on the Forums text link from below...more than once).
Edit: FYI, running 1920x1090, so no odd resolution is the reason.
(insert pithy comment here)
I haven't been on this site and forum in about a year(?). I come back and the website is atrocious as well as the forums (from a graphic design standpoint). Jesus what happened... and unfortunately the only thing uploadable via the file upload button are .txt files. Another annoyance.
Spambots were using the upload feature to, let's just say it wasn't pretty.
As for the site, we're working on a revised template.

I'll work on tweaking the menu spacing this weekend.
While you all have my attention, any other suggested revisions to the site template?

Well, I like the design, but I have friends that complain there's too much 'white'. Makes me wonder what settings they have their monitors on, that mere white-space could be blamed for eye-strain headaches, but that's what they Say.

If you're doing the forum tweaks, you may want to lighten the gradient on the City of Titans at the top, since the "of" is fairly dark and gets a bit lost in the darker background, since it's a smaller size.
(insert pithy comment here)
When mousing over the menu to see the submenu items, it sometimes seems to retract too fast for me to be able to select one of the subitems. e.g. clicking on Community and then it retracts while I'm mousing over to Forums. Doesn't happen all the time but often enough to be irritating.
I don't know if this related to the spacing issue or if it's a timing thing.
"I don't think you understand the gravity of your situation."
In my experience, if I bring the cursor below the submenu item bar, it disappears almost immediately. If I leave the cursor on the bar, it remains open indefinitely. Perhaps making the bar wider would make it easier to keep the cursor on the bar while moving it to the button you want?

Typically what is done is an invisible "slop region" (Apple's name) is defined in a large-margin area around the menus in question, and the menus only retract if:
[list=1][*]The pointer leaves the slop region, or [*]the pointer stays in the slop region for a relatively long time, say a second or two.[/list]
I'm not aware of a good way to do this purely in CSS, but it's doable with CSS + JS. (I can whip up example code on jsfiddle if desired.)
[i]Has anyone seen my mind? It was right here...[/i]
- It could be great to have a real visible seperation between the sub-items, like "Merchandise | My Account | Community" between the clickable words or even put the word in a rectangle
- You should think about adding a color change at mouse ouver ^^
- My feeling concerning the "horizontal" sub-menu is that's not really user-friendly :/ Sometimes i need to redo the way because the menu changes when i lead my mouse on my choice
- And maybe, concerning the "My account" link, it could be put away from the other parts in the menu. Like the personal link at the right and the rest at the left or something like that.
That were my 2 cents :)

I switched from the bar to the button approach, and from mouse-over to click-expand. Should be friendlier for mobile devices as well.

The Forums looks pretty snazzy now. It'll take a little bit to get used to it, but it's nice.
An infinite number of tries doesn't mean that any one of those tries will succeed. I could flip an infinite number of pennies an infinite number of times and, barring genuine randomness, they will never come up "Waffles".
I'm not a big fan of the menu change. A horizontal bar of menus worked well; the problem was the menus that dropped down were horizontal as well, and vertical (like normal pull-down menus) would have functioned better. (Full disclosure: I hate hamburger menus outside mobile, and not often there, either, but it could work here.)
If you really want vertical menus like I'm currently seeing on this page, and have them expand downward shoving the ones below down with them, that's an [url=http://jqueryui.com/accordion/][i]accordion[/i][/url] and, frankly, is best done as a sidebar (usually on the left side, 25% width or less) so you don't have to go halfway down the browser window (on desktop) to get to the content.
The white text on blue background is nice, but the lighter part of the blue gradient is reducing the contrast quite a bit (I'd recommend more of a royal blue instead of a sky blue to help with contrast). A 30-50% gray drop shadow for the text, or increasing kerning could help. Further the red for "(new)" is too dark; I'd recommend yellow or goldenrod (or gold; try a few values and see which gives the best contrast).
Finally, the main white background behind the post boxes could be toned down to a 70-90% gray to let the post boxes stand out a bit more. Maybe even a 0.5em right-and-down black drop shadow on the post boxes, too.
[i]Has anyone seen my mind? It was right here...[/i]
Oh, and another request: can we ditch the comment titles? You know, where it makes a link out of the first few words and puts it in a bar on top of the post content? They get autogenerated on first preview, can't be edited, and the link is the same as the link in the post number. They're pretty much useless clutter.
[i]Has anyone seen my mind? It was right here...[/i]
OK, setting the background seems to be nontrivial, either because the stylesheets have it set to white in a lot of places or my inline edits aren't cascading like they should. Here's what I've tossed together so far to put drop shadows on posts and tint the main content background:
div.forum-post {
box-shadow: 4px 4px 2px #444;
margin: 0 0 8px 0;
}
div.main-content,
div.content-inner,
div.forum-comments {
background: #eee;
}
I've got some errands to run but might be able to come back to this tonight.
[i]Has anyone seen my mind? It was right here...[/i]
Ok, how about now on the menu?
And I'll look into the comment titles.

I like it a lot!
Thank you!
Just curious... is that cityscape in the background OUR city?

Nope, a public domain picture of New York. This is a half-step to the site template upgrade being worked on, and we wanted a shot that filled-in for the actual Titan City shot for it.

The menus are much better, and the yellow highlighting looks really good. There's a minor bug in that sometimes the menus aren't wide enough for "Frequently Asked Questions"; maybe [url=http://stackoverflow.com/questions/118241/calculate-text-width-with-javascript#118251]add some JS to set menu width based on text width.[/url]
The City of Titans logo is sitting right on the inner content box edge. It just needs some bottom margin (for some reason, it only has top margin):
#branding {
margin-bottom: 1em;
}
To get rid of the titles:
div.forum-post-title {
display: none;
}
To center the menu bar:
.nav ul {
width: 100%;
}
To fill the unused part of the menu bar with blue:
.nav {
background: #095cb1;
}
To fancy up the page title (might want to look at /themes/adaptivetheme/at_core/css/at.settings.style.headings.css line 8 for other places this could apply):
#page-title {
font-variant: small-caps;
font-style: oblique;
font-family: verdana,helvetica,arial,sans-serif; /* Open Sans "bold" is still pretty light weight. */
}
[i]Has anyone seen my mind? It was right here...[/i]
Now I'm on a roll...
Let's give the "your comment has been posted" message some drop shadow love:
div.messages {
box-shadow: 4px 4px 2px #444;
}
Give the page sections borders so they don't melt into the cityscape:
#menu-bar,
#columns,
.region-tertiary-content {
border: thin solid black;
}
.region-tertiary-content {
margin: 1em;
}
#menu-bar {
border-radius: 1em;
}
#block-search-form {
padding: 1em;
}
Breadcrumb chain!
#breadcrumb {
margin: 0.5em 2em;
background: none;
}
#breadcrumb li {
background: #eee;
border: thin solid black;
border-radius: 0.5em;
padding: 0 0.5em;
margin: 0 0.5em;
font-style: oblique;
font-variant: small-caps;
}
#breadcrumb .crumb-separator {
display: none;
}
[i]Has anyone seen my mind? It was right here...[/i]
BTW, if div.forum-post-title doesn't have "display: none;", then you get an extra line up at the top of the post content because it's still respecting the title's "border-bottom" style.
[i]Has anyone seen my mind? It was right here...[/i]
Forgot to mention that the contrast problem between the white text and the blue gradient backgrounds is fixed. Thanks!
That said, it's a little odd that there's ".forum-posted-on { font-size: .8em; }" (in /modules/advanced_forum/styles/naked/advanced-forum.naked.structure.css line 305) but there's no corresponding style for .forum-post-number, so the post number is bigger than the timestamp. Personally, I'd delete the font-side from .forum-posted-on; the bigger timestamp looks nice.
[i]Has anyone seen my mind? It was right here...[/i]
Loving the forum style updates!
The "City of Titans" title is slightly brighter but slightly less saturated than the menu bar. Perhaps it's an individual perception, but I find the menu bar stands out more being more saturated. But perhaps it [the title] just needs a touch of another colour to draw the eye?

I really quite like the new layout and design.
Much better! So far today I haven't accidentally clicked anything. ;)
(insert pithy comment here)
Much better, and I like the new menu bar! I also like the move of the search box to the top; it was getting lost at the bottom.
On to the nitpicks....
[hr]
Menu width is locked to heading width, so "Frequently Asked Questions" falls off the edge. If you're not going to use JavaScript to dynamically set it based on item widths, then set it to something arbitrarily big enough (though this means most menus are wider than they need to be):
.sf-menu ul li {
width: 16em; /* was 100% */
}
[img]http://i.imgur.com/44K9OhL.png[/img]
[hr]
Horizontal rules hit the right edge but not the left. This is because .forum-post-content has left padding but not right. Fix:
.forum-post-content {
padding-right: 10px;
}
Though that means that paragraphs now have 20 pixels of padding total on the right. Might want to delete the padding-right style on ".forum-post-panel-main p", or at least override it if you need other paragraphs in .forum-post-panel-main to have it:
.forum-post-content p {
padding-right: 0;
}
[hr]
I don't like the extra fading added to the background city image; IMHO it looked better before. However, I see why you'd need it to have any contrast on the bread crumbs:
[img]http://i.imgur.com/1DEahhi.png[/img]
And I see you didn't like the black borders, so maybe give them backgrounds that match the menus so they don't have to contrast to the city image:
#breadcrumb li {
padding: 0;
}
#breadcrumb a {
background: #095cb1;
border-radius: 0.5em;
margin: 0 0.25em;
padding: 0.1em 0.5em;
}
#breadcrumb a:link,
#breadcrumb a:visited {
color: white;
}
#breadcrumb a:hover,
#breadcrumb a:focus {
background: #3270c5;
color: #ffea00;
text-decoration: none;
}
#breadcrumb .crumb-separator {
display: none;
}
[img]http://i.imgur.com/IkcQ4At.png[/img]
(Note: the mouse is hovering over the middle breadcrumb, but was not captured in the screenshot.)
We could instead stack the crumbs together, too:
#breadcrumb li {
padding: 0;
}
#breadcrumb a {
background: #095cb1;
padding: 0.1em 0.5em;
border-right: thin solid #aaa;
}
#breadcrumb a:link,
#breadcrumb a:visited {
color: white;
}
#breadcrumb a:hover,
#breadcrumb a:focus {
background: #3270c5;
color: #ffea00;
text-decoration: none;
}
#breadcrumb li:first-of-type a {
border-top-left-radius: 0.5em;
border-bottom-left-radius: 0.5em;
}
#breadcrumb li:last-of-type a {
border-top-right-radius: 0.5em;
border-bottom-right-radius: 0.5em;
border-right: none;
}
#breadcrumb .crumb-separator {
display: none;
}
[img]http://i.imgur.com/oU8Ux8k.png[/img]
If y'all really like the arrowhead crumb separators, I've got a couple ideas on them, too. Just ask. They don't need the .crumb-separator element.
[hr]
One last thing: maybe put the menu bar on a diet...

padding: 0;
}
[img=591x93]http://i.imgur.com/oRZjHqh.png[/img]
[i]Has anyone seen my mind? It was right here...[/i]
[img]http://i.imgur.com/8fyozXs.png[/img]
[code]
.sf-menu.sf-style-blue li {
background: rgba(0, 0, 255, 0.2);
}
div#menu-bar {}
.nav {
background: rgba(9, 92, 177, 0.6);
}
#page div.content-inner {
background-color: rgba(204, 204, 204, 0.33);
}
#content-column {
background: rgba(238, 238, 238, 0.33);
}
div.forum-post {
margin: 0 0 12px 0;
border: 1px solid rgba(37, 44, 196, 0.36);
box-shadow: 4px 4px 2px rgba(68, 68, 68, 0.35);
}
[/code]
Transparency for its own sake? IMHO it doesn't help; it adds too much visual noise. You'd really need to rebuild the theme around it.
Also, forget about the [code] tags; those "br"s it adds make it nearly unreadable.
[i]Has anyone seen my mind? It was right here...[/i]
i like a bit of translucency, especially if the background is already washed out a bit. ;)
And I can't forget post spacing.
ex: my SMS Forums has some spacing as well...

Read enough Facebook and you have to make Sanity Checks. I guess FB is the Great Old One of the interent these days... - Beamrider
Not sure if this has been covered in the code above, but the forum section titles (News and Organization, Development, Free to Play, etc.) should probably be coloured white or similar lighter colour if possible. The blue on blue makes it difficult to read.
It hasn't been covered in any of the code above. I agree with you that the contrast is bad. Currently it's using your browser's default link colors (blue if unvisited, purple if visited).
To make it white text like the thread windows:
.forum-table-superheader .forum-table-name, /* one of these may be redundant; both are present in existing CSS */
.forum-table-superheader .forum-table-name a {
color: white;
}
Of course, IMHO since the background is a lighter blue, dark blue is a better color for the text, and there's some more stylin' to be had...
.forum-table-superheader {
padding: 1px 0 1px .5em;
}
.forum-table-superheader .forum-table-name, .forum-table-superheader .forum-table-name a {
color: #02A;
font-variant: small-caps;
font-size: 125%;
font-style: oblique;
font-family: verdana,helvetica,arial,sans-serif;
text-decoration: none;
}
.forum-table-superheader .forum-table-description {
color: #222;
font-family: "Helvetica Narrow","Arial Narrow",Tahoma,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;
}
.forum-details .forum-name a {
color: #02A;
font-variant: small-caps;
text-decoration: none;
font-style: oblique;
font-weight: bold;
}
.forum-details .forum-name a:hover,
.forum-table-superheader .forum-table-name a:hover {
color: blue;
}
.forum-header {
font-variant: small-caps;
}
.forum-table-wrap {
box-shadow: 4px 4px 2px #444;
}
[img]http://i.imgur.com/znYpSlF.png[/img]
That said, gold also works well as a text color:
.forum-table-superheader {
padding: 1px 0 1px .5em;
}
.forum-table-superheader .forum-table-name, .forum-table-superheader .forum-table-name a {
color: gold;
font-variant: small-caps;
font-size: 125%;
font-style: oblique;
font-family: verdana,helvetica,arial,sans-serif;
text-decoration: none;
}
.forum-table-superheader .forum-table-description {
color: #222;
font-family: "Helvetica Narrow","Arial Narrow",Tahoma,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;
}
.forum-details .forum-name a {
color: #02A;
font-variant: small-caps;
text-decoration: none;
font-style: oblique;
font-weight: bold;
}
.forum-details .forum-name a:hover {
color: blue;
}
.forum-table-superheader .forum-table-name a:hover {
color: yellow;
}
.forum-header {
font-variant: small-caps;
}
.forum-table-wrap {
box-shadow: 4px 4px 2px #444;
}
[img]http://i.imgur.com/jHinaOZ.png[/img]
More difficult would be to change the gradients and border colors to the same blue hue as the menu bar (in which case the text should be white, and gold on hover), but that's a lot more work since there's several places in the theme's CSS you'd have to change.
And there's one thing I can't fix: the folder icons are too light and melt into the background. They need to be a darker color, either dark blue or gray.
[i]Has anyone seen my mind? It was right here...[/i]
Oops, forgot to mention...
The (new) flag in the post bar looks better as gold, not red, and shouldn't underline on hover:
.new {
color: gold;
}
a#new:hover {
text-decoration: none;
}
And the post spacing looks better at 12px, per Izzy:
div.forum-post {
margin: 0 0 12px 0;
}
[img]http://i.imgur.com/IKIqobF.png[/img]
And the post title needs to be removed from the "Preview Comment" screen:
div.post-title { /* the other one was div.forum-post-title */
display: none;
}
[i]Has anyone seen my mind? It was right here...[/i]
Reminds me, need to remove the Free to Play section, as that was rooted on a now abandoned sales model.
Technical Director
Read enough Facebook and you have to make Sanity Checks. I guess FB is the Great Old One of the interent these days... - Beamrider
Now let's give the "Add new comment" section on the bottom some love!
First, bring it up to speed with the rest of the page:
h2.comment-form {
font-variant: small-caps;
font-style: oblique;
font-family: verdana,helvetica,arial,sans-serif;
background: white;
margin-bottom: 0;
padding: 0 1em;
box-shadow: 4px 4px 2px #444;
border: 2px solid #2587C4;
border-bottom: 1px solid #2587C4;
border-radius: 1em 1em 0 0;
background: #2587C4;
background: -webkit-gradient(linear,left top,left bottom,from(#2587C4),to(#58B3ED));
background: -moz-linear-gradient(top,#2587C4,#58B3ED);
color: #ffffff;
}
form.comment-form {
margin: 0;
padding: 1px 1em;
background: white;
border: 2px solid #2587C4;
border-top: none;
border-radius: 0 0 1em 1em;
box-shadow: 4px 4px 2px #444;
}
Then, noting that the "text format" selection is [i]useless[/i] since "plain text" and "BBCode" are parsed exactly the same, let's get rid of all that redundancy and clutter:
div.form-item-comment-body-und-0-format,
div.filter-guidelines-xbbcode,
div.filter-guidelines-plain_text h3,
div#edit-comment-body-und-0-format-help {
display: none;
}
[img]http://i.imgur.com/XSpkjdU.png[/img]
[i]Has anyone seen my mind? It was right here...[/i]
LOL, I used that as an example because it was the only one with a multi-line section description. (Your "width: 90%" works!)
Note: I edited [url=#comment-114357]post #30[/url] to fix a bug in the rounded borders of the joined version that only appears if there's only one breadcrumb.
EDIT: I'm going to work on making Izzy happy, transparenting that gray background to see more city!
#content-column,
#main-content,
#content, /* How many places did they need to set this?! */
div.content-inner {
background: none;
}
This, of course, makes the page titles stick out as the only thing left with a black text/gray background style, so I'm going to see what I can throw at it.
I've attached the CSS I've got so far so you don't have to tape it together from all the posts.
[i]Has anyone seen my mind? It was right here...[/i]
Fixed up the forums page for transparent background:

}

background: #095cb1;
color: #ffea00;
box-shadow: 4px 4px 2px #444;
border-radius: 1em;
}
#tasks {
margin-bottom: 0;
text-align: center;
}
#tasks ul {
display: inline-block;
padding-left: 0;
border-radius: 1em;
}

The page title could probably use some improvement, but I'm not sure which way to go with it. If we had some kind of Awesome Font (i.e. Bam! Pow! Zoom!) we could use it colored yellow, outlined black, and with a text drop shadow as opposed to a box shadow, and put it on a transparent background. Or maybe we could cook up some kind of Awesome Box with jagged borders? Like I said, this is more than I can do this evening. But I think it looks pretty good for now.
P.S. Wish I had some kind of "spoiler tags" to hide the huge CSS blobs.
[i]Has anyone seen my mind? It was right here...[/i]
No additional CSS mods needed for the thread page apparently...

I forgot to mention I liked the old green-checkmark green-background "Your comment has been posted" messages better. The new ones are kind of bland and it's easy to miss the green border.
I changed the forum title font to Eurostile for shizzle, but it's a crappy TTF ripoff (kerning is too tight) I found on the Internet and wouldn't want to use for a pro site. I've also got a Microgramma Bold Extended laying around...

In case anyone didn't notice it, the word "Updates" written in white in the drop-down menu is wider than the blue background behind it for some reason.
Edit: This appears only to be a problem when reading a forum post, not when looking at the main CoT page. So there's something different about the header when you go from the main page to something else.

Yep - the Community drop-tab does it as well when looking at a post.

I'm not sure why, but the forums page and the thread page don't use the same menu code. The thread page menus are packed into the middle and drop down instantly, while the forums page's menus are spread out, animated, and have drop triangles. IMHO Doctor Tyche's trying out two different variants and you might want to let him know which you like better (aside from the width bug you mentioned, of course).
Either way, I [url=http://cityoftitans.com/comment/114357#comment-114357]posted the fix[/url] above but it hasn't made it into the code base.
[i]Has anyone seen my mind? It was right here...[/i]
Anyway, for folks playing the home game, if you want to try out the huge mass of changes and fixes I've posted in this thread (or any other CSS patch file, for that matter), here's how to do it on Firefox:
[list=1][*]Download the CSS file. The last one I posted is [url=http://cityoftitans.com/sites/default/files/cot-forum-css_0.txt]here[/url].
[*]In Firefox, press Shift-F7 to pop up the Style Editor.
[*]In the left pane of the control panel that pops up, press the button that's a box with an arrow pointing up.
[img]http://i.imgur.com/BYJnhMv.png[/img]
[*]Set the format to "all files" (because we can only upload .txt here), select the CSS file you downloaded earlier, and click Open.
[*]Press F12 to hide the control panel. You can also click the X in the upper-right corner of the control panel to make it go away.[/list]
This patch lasts only as long as the page does; reload the page or go to another page to go back to normal.
I haven't figured out how to patch in a whole stylesheet into Chrome or Safari (you can paste in rules one at a time in Chrome), and I don't have IE or Edge handy at the moment. You might need to add extensions to allow that.

On topic enough! I'm worried they're running out of menu bar space.
[i]Has anyone seen my mind? It was right here...[/i]
Just a request, could we get the Active Topics option back? There used to be a link at the top of the page, so you can go straight back to Active topics, now you have to go to Forums then Active topics

Minor thing, but perhaps addressable -- I don't know if it's possible or not, but if I end up with two windows open side-by-side (so this forum is half the desktop), the drop-arrows for the menus end up inside the word, as they stay in place, whilst the words slide to the side to take up less space. The drop menus also resize down with the top menu words, so that they are cut off.
(insert pithy comment here)
"Active Topics" is also a tab on the Forums main page, right under the "FORUMS" title line.
[i]Has anyone seen my mind? It was right here...[/i]
Oh, it's possible. The question is how much work will it take. Basically, whatever code that works out the menu widths needs to set a minimum width as well, based on the size of the text and arrowhead, and that leads to the menu bar either clipping off the right or wrapping around to a second row. This isn't something I can patch with CSS, unfortunately.

In a sense, they are. Previously, when using my Kindle Fire in a landscape orientation, I'd see the menu bar much like it is on my desktop. Since they added the Cape Chaser tab, it's now a dropdown button like I'd see on my phone. ^_^
Update: Well, it was, just before I posted. Now it's a two line bar on the front page, and a tighter fitting one line bar in the forums.

I've seen some of these systems change layouts based on browser width, and sometimes it's annoying because they use actual viewport width so when I zoom in on something on my iPad, it converts to a narrow phone-like view which shoves what I was looking at off screen.

It is great having this stuff easy to find! It's like a roleplayer's handbook. I'm now bouncing around this city in my mind and looking forward to more maps and Cape Chaser wanted posters.

One minor thing, but it might be worth considering - having the navigation text links ( Forums » Lairs and Hangouts » General Discussion for example ) at the bottom of the page as well as at the top. This would help return to a specific parent forum section via a click after posting a reply or viewing a thread that has several replies, so you're well down the page. As it is the only links are to my personal account page and to log out, neither of which I'm actually ever likely to do when reading to the bottom of a thread.

Above or below the "Add New Comment" section? I don't know if Drupal lets a template repeat the breadcrumbs section in two places...
Any preferences on breadcrumbs format? I put a couple proposals in [url=http://cityoftitans.com/comment/114357#comment-114357]this comment[/url]. The current thin black text on noisy background is a bit hard to read.
[i]Has anyone seen my mind? It was right here...[/i]
Either way, but I figured it would have to go below, where the Account/Log Out options are now.
(insert pithy comment here)
Above the "Add a New Comment" is my choice. If I comment, it's only a little bit lower to go to reach the comment space, then after I finish and save the comment, there it is right below my new comment. But if it's below the new comment space, then whether I comment or not I have to go past that space. Also, it's not evident on this thread yet, but it could be on the same line as the thread page links.

IMHO the account/logout options need to be kicked up top with the search bar, and frankly all the login/logout/my account stuff should be integrated in there, and removed from the main menu bar.
Not sure how to do that, though.

Is there a way to have the 'My Account' flagged in red or something if you have a private message waiting, or some other sort of noticeable alert? I think the first that was sent to all KS backers I never noticed until....well, way after the fact, and only saw a second one because I hovered over that menu when I was looking for something else.
(insert pithy comment here)
Yeah something like that would be useful. There have been several times where I've gotten PMs and not really noticed that I have them until days (or even weeks) later and I find myself having to apologize for not responding sooner.

Used to be there was a "You have a new message" message right under the menu bar, but I haven't gotten any messages lately so I don't know if it's still working.

I think it still tells you something like that when you first log in. But if you don't pay attention to that or you've been logged on for awhile there's no overt indicator other than accidentally scrolling over the My Account menu button like Dark Ether mentioned.

It tells you if you have new messages in a green notification box when you log in. Aside from that there's the username/"logout" links at the very bottom of the page; if you have new messages, a "You have new messages" line appears under them.
Personally, I think all that's a mess. I've been working on finding what other things we can do. I'm pretty sure "My Account" will get ejected from the nav bar once we find something we like; it's not really site navigation as much as user preferences.
[i]Has anyone seen my mind? It was right here...[/i]
That works as long as you log in/out each time, but I generally leave my machine going most of the time, and don't log out when I leave, so I don't get the log in screen until the cookies expire. I also generally read most of the forum stuff, so I don't make use of the What's New on the forums stuff or the like. I only caught a recent message when I just happened to mouse over My Account.
Anyway, it would be beneficial I think if anything like that could be done, but I'll manage either way.
(insert pithy comment here)
Ah OK I just happened to get a PM this evening and I saw that "very bottom of the page" message about it. Thing is I don't think I usually scroll down to the very bottom of these pages very often so I'm not sure I would've actually seen that alert about my PM if you hadn't mentioned it.
Would there be any way of having that "very bottom of the page" alert pop up somewhere at the "very top of the page"? Wouldn't need to be fancy - just something simple enough to get the job done.

In addition to the navigation links at the bottom, which I still think would be beneficial to keep from either scrolling all the way back to the top or hitting back on the browser, I think that a "Mark as Read" for the various sections might be good for those of us who are....ehh, "picky" about having unread reminders all over the forum for sections we don't check out. I'm not sure what the capabilities are of the current forum software, so just tossing this out for consideration. And tidiness. Mustn't forget the tidiness.
(insert pithy comment here)
If by section you mean something like this "General Discussion" that this thread resides in then it already exists, it's in the drop-down at the bottom of the thread list.
Many other forums I frequent have a feature that by clicking on the folder icon (or whatever they have there) to the left side of a section, it will mark all read in that section. I was just wondering if something like that was possible. It's certainly more user friendly than gong inside a particular forum section, scrolling to the bottom, opening a drop menu, then clicking to mark it as read, then navigating back to the top to then click a link to go back to the forums' main page.
(insert pithy comment here)
There's nothing about a folder icon that says "click me to mark all posts read", though. Most people expect a folder icon to either be selected or open when clicked.
Alas, the forum software is third-party code and I haven't read far enough to know if that kind of thing is possible.
[i]Has anyone seen my mind? It was right here...[/i]
Yeah, I have to agree with Lin there. To my knowledge no forum that I have visited has had that functionality, though I could have missed it. Most of them has had easier ways to mark sections of and sometimes also the entire forum as read.
Personally I think that a link/button at the top of each section, and optionally for entire forum, would be the best way to go.
I have a request.
When I choose to track an author, the track function shows me all of the forums posted to, but not the posts themselves. Is there any way to have the track function point to the posts by the author instead of just to the threads the posts were made??
[hr]I like to take your ideas and supersize them. This isn't criticism, it is flattery. I come with nothing but good will and a spirit of team-building. If you take what I write any other way, that is probably just because I wasn't very clear.
Seconded!

So, I'm not sure if this is the best place to post this, or if anyone's pointed it out previously, but when the names for the Commander and Operator titles on their respective forum subsections were switched, the text blurb under Operator(Formerly commander-the control archetype) wasn't edited and still says Commander.
It still says: "Discuss the [b]Commander[/b] classification here including Engineer, Director, and Executor specifications."
Sorry, not any time soon. The tracking stuff is at a lower level than I have easy access to (read: I'd have to write a lot of custom code and know the framework a lot better than I do so I don't create a security exploit) and this is another case where the framework considers topics and comments to be different animals, providing lots of goodies for the former and very little for the latter. BTW, Dev Comments was easily the more difficult half of the dev tracker to set up.
