Players with Mac versions of the game will not be affected, but you will have a slightly longer wait for your version of the new maps. Please make a copy of your character folder before running the new update, just to make sure you don't lose any of your custom work.

At least 16GB of main DRAM.

Taking a bit longer to get it onto the main site due to the number of pictures in the update. For those who cannot wait:

Wow. Just wow.

Wow. Just wow.

I'm usually pretty boring with hairstyles on my toons (well, except for the one that was an incompletely-transformed Warwolf, his hair was crazy), but I know hairstyles are very important for many people, and all of that looks absolutely amazing.

Awesome stuff! I still play

Awesome stuff! I still play a fairly heavily modded Skyrim, so I may have some of those. The more, the merrier, I say, whether it's hair or costume pieces. even if I personally don't like them, others will, and if they can customize their character to be as real to them as they wish, then they are more than likely to keep on playing, and probably try other things as well.

I am assuming hair physics will be there for pony tails and the like?

Nice work! Glad you're on

Nice work! Glad you're on the team, Hunter. I found it fascinating that the longer hairstyles actually take less time to produce.

I'm pleased to see that the advance of technology is helping to break down the old Catch-22 of "you need experience to get a job, but you can't get a job without experience."

So if I'm interpreting the picture notes correctly, only the ones labeled as City of Titans in the bottom corner are actual CoT assets in some stage of development, and the other pics are just examples of the talents of Hunter and Newsea -- so only the hair should be taken as representative of what we'll see in CoT, and we shouldn't think that the actual body and faces in the later pix are a glimpse of the art style we'll see in CoT, correct?

Aye, good question. Otherwise I'd expect some serious clipping issues with the longer hairstyles.

I never seem to give enough credit or can say enough(or right things) praise to modders. I use many of his Skyrim hairstyles if I am thinking whom I am thinking of going by the pictures. Now if you could get RAN46 for enhancing character edit, Caliente: for Beautiful Bodies, anything from Elianora, I will give up smoking til release.

I especially like this image:

Oh man, I can't tell you how

Oh man, I can't tell you how awesome it feels to have Hunter on your team for me; I've been a Skyrim player since the game launched, and my biggest issue with it was always that the better looking character customization options that could be added by mods was the lack of visual integration; unless you had multiple overhauls running, you'd be the one pretty person in a sea of potato-faces. With a skyrim character modder actively working on the Hair for CoT... well, it basically fixes all my problems with that.

Cinnder wrote:

I believe it was stated a while back that hair would be getting its own physics, so no worries there.

An infinite number of tries doesn't mean that any one of those tries will succeed. I could flip an infinite number of pennies an infinite number of times and, barring genuine randomness, they will never come up "Waffles".

I love big hair, I cannot lie...

I also, sometimes, like 'classic' hairstyles. Let's not make all of our assets too 'mod', okay?

One of the issues I occasionally run into is hair (and hat and other headgear) models that do not adapt to changes in the head shape/size. In CoH, I often did things like maximize the head-dimensions on 'Huge' model characters, so they didn't look like pinheads. Sometimes, the result was:

Agreed. I don't want all the male characters to look like Lego figures with their hair on sideways, which I see a lot irl.

Well, yes, I got that part.

Well, yes, I got that part. what I'm asking is more a directed thing based on genre, because that didn't narrow it down at all.

Fantasy has elves, dwarves, and other such things as "Races". Science fiction has "alien races" and the like for different alien species. then we have more standard, real human ethnicities. I'm asking what of the above you mean, because from what I can tell Hunter already stated in one of the answers in the original post that he's working on ethnic hairstyles.

What kind of hairstyles are you looking for?

Look carefully at "City of Titans believes in heroes that can look like you.", aka Julius. You can also see it on the banner shot, though on a more Caucasian model.

It's pretty close to a first in gaming, especially for an 'indie' studio. It's a masterpiece of Hunter's work, and possibly the hardest thing he's ever done for us.

And it's just the first of a number. That's a promise.

Alright, so I just trawled my saved images folder and pulled this out of, like, seven minutes spent in paint: http://i.imgur.com/tBwCb22.png

Some of the hairstyles are androgynous enough to be used on both men and women, but there's only one outright masculine hairstyle (near the middle of the top). The top right hand two are the most fanciful ones, but that also means I want them the most - a leafy hairstyle and a fiery hairstyle would be excellent customization options for players, since not every player is going to want to have hair where their hair should be. I already have ideas for an ifrit-related character that'd use just such a hairstyle. Hopefully the image I slapped together is at all useful, even just as inspiration.

I obviously don't expect all of these to get in, but I figure the more I slam out, the more the artists can pick the stuff that appeals to them and make use of it.

bythepowercosmic wrote:

Aha, yeah, that's what I was talking about. Good images, too - I particularly like #2 and would like to see it added.

Hm, most of my hair desires are pretty tame. As long as 'basic' hair styles are included (some games oddly miss those) I'll be pretty happy with the usual mix of sane and nutty.

Except...

The half-shaved punk look. I have a cyborg character idea or two that could use the half-shaved punk. It's a niche hairstyle no doubt, but when it comes to a character with one half of their head metal/burned/scales/etc...

Under Construction...

First thank you Hunter for

First thank you Hunter for your commitment to working with Afronatural hair. Some thing to remember about black hair is the edges; with the sample you've created the texture is nice enough but the shape is simply unappealing.

1) Notice the guys in ByThePowerCosmic's examples have a clean line along the forehead and down the sideburns and in the "kitchen" aka back of the neck.
2) Another technique to consider is how to display a "clean fade" on the sides and back.
3) The "part" of the hair is still (and perhaps more) important with afronatural hair, even in afros themselves. Direction is a huge part of styling

This can be hard to explain to people without experience with the global black community, but if there's someone on the dev team who can help you understand what I'm talking about you should definitely hit them up for good feedback*

*I want to say how important the dedication to ethnic hair is to me. Curls, Kinks, Locks, Braids, Volume, or Flat.. all of them are all of us. I'm glad to hear MWM express this design goal and hope your team has the diversity to approach it. I had to buy an afro from the game store on Halloween in Wildstar, and it's hard to express how disappointed that made me feel. Afro's shouldn't be reduced to Halloween Costumes

Same here. While I'm pleased to see the variety we'll have, I'm more likely to use less fancy styles for the majority of my characters. If we have a selection that approximates the 'basic' hairstyles of the various main characters in the MCU films (for example), I'll be satisfied.

I think you will do fine.

I think you will do fine. You can get very creative with some non-straight hair. The lucky part is that most women (even those not of color but with frizzy hair) tend to straighten it. Tried to insert some examples myself, but to no avail. Btw I loved how CoX tried to address this in the game. They managed to pull off dreads nicely in GW2. I am impressed. I wish you luck Hunter and I GREATLY appreciate the desire to provide these hairstyles as best you can. We do not all have straight hair. It's one of the things that truly bugs me. Frankly, as long as you TRY I'll be fine. Again good luck and welcome!

Hairfeathers.

Hairfeathers.

I would like to see options for both men and women to have feathers in their hair. Like the following:
,

I imagine that hairfeathers such as those could be an optional accessory that we could add to already-designed hairstyles we choose in character creation. That could be a good way of doing it without having to create specific hairstyles with feathers in them.

But any of these would need a dedicated hairstyle.

And the following would definitely need to be specifically created. It could be awesome for some character designs. This one obviously channels the Phoenix, but the whole hair-becomes-feathers could be done in so many effects and lengths.

(right click and open image in a new tab)

Or even with leaves instead of feathers... or flakes of mica... or tattered rags... or... or...

I like to take your ideas and supersize them. This isn't criticism, it is flattery. I come with nothing but good will and a spirit of team-building. If you take what I write any other way, that is probably just because I wasn't very clear.

I'm glad to hear MWM express this design goal and hope your team has the diversity to approach it. I had to buy an afro from the game store on Halloween in Wildstar, and it's hard to express how disappointed that made me feel. Afro's shouldn't be reduced to Halloween Costumes

About the edges, they haven't been created yet :P We will implement that as a skullcap. What you're seeing is just the mesh to give it the 3D Frizzy look, and the edges will be drawn on with a skullcap, so no worries about that.
We will definitely be including all types of hairstyles :)

Apachii has around 200 hairstyles, and the hair pack that I took part in (KS Hairdos) has close to 700, and both packs ported theirs from Sims and both are on Nexus. I think I've seen about almost every hairstyle! Haha, I know all the names by heart as well. :P If you see any by name that you particularly like, let me know.

About Hair!
I don't remember if I requested this before. I might have! I just can't seem to find it.

Please, let's have hair in Two (or more) pieces. One piece is for 'above the ears' and one piece for 'the ears and below'. These two pieces of hair should certainly blend and combine into whatever wonderful hair-do designs the Devs come up with. However, if one adds a Hat, then only the Top hair-piece needs to be removed and characters can keep their lovely hair and still wear a hat.

In too many games, if a character puts on a hat, or bandana, or half-helmet, then they immediately get a savage haircut, or some bit a drapery is added to cover up their hair. Wear a hat equals lose your hair and that's not Right!

Even better, if the two-part hairstyle was Embraced, then we could create many 'custom' hairstyles by mixing different hair-pieces. Males and females could share hair-piece libraries, too.

Be Well!

Big Glam Metal hair please! Pretty please? It's how I ideally always wanted my toon to
look in CoH because I designed her like that on paper as seen in my avatar. I'm sure I
wouldn't be the only one to find a use for such styles, fans of X-Men in the early-90s
should remember how huge Rogue and Storm's hair was.

If the shape and curls seem complicated for a 3D mesh, I refer you to the hairstyles in
the Create-A-Wrestler in WWE 2K17 which features several styles that manage to
incorporate curls and high volume pretty well.

There are similarities, yes, but Washu usually wears her hair much longer than her daughter Ryoko, at least in the OVAs. But yes, we want Washu Hair as well! And Ryo-Ohki Hair! ^_^

It's looking really good and

It's looking really good and I'm in full support. Two things that pop to mind though:

1) Almost all of my beloved City of Heroes characters hair is flexible (they are more of a general style than anything), but a few are very specific. My avatar over there is my main character in my own webcomic and it would be hard if not impossible to play her in this game if she didn't have the same hair option. I can even change her outfit if I have to, but the hair is kind of key. I'm not sure how many other people will have this same problem, but it's definitely the case for two of my characters.

2) If I can advocate for a character-creator-ui improvement: long lists of options was nice in that we had options, but stinky in that it took so long to find the right one. Yes, we happily spent hours in a character creator, but maybe we could have had just as much (or more) fun if the UI had allowed us better control. For example, if we have 300 hair styles, instead of going through each one at a time, maybe we could have a gallery of thumbnails? Say we pick a category of short hairstyles; then we see a grid of our character's face with options (maybe 4 x 6 or so?). The options would affect all the thumbnails at once so when we change things like color, amount of greying hair (for age), highlights, and length, it affects all thumbnails at once.

Welcome to the team Hunter

Welcome to the team Hunter Robins! Impressive work you've done sofar. Good to have you here now.

Christopher Robin already added an image of my favorite hairstyle :D (thanks!), but I have a few more to add.

City of Heroes had loads of varied female hairstyles. But for the guys there were not many (good ones) to choose from (in my opinion).
Most of the times you would see many male heroes (and villains) wearing the same haircut.

So... more male hair styles please. (Same goes for facial hair, but I that was not the question (yet?) )

Some examples;

The gallery of thumbnails is

The gallery of thumbnails is not uncommon in other games. Vindictus and to a certain extent GW2 each have thumbnails of the costume or hair option. However, particularly in GW2, these are not always clear, and may look different when applied to your character. Perhaps a list could work with a thumbnail or preview on mouse over, to keep things somewhat tidy. There's also the flexibility of some parts. Take the common jacket, there you may have the option to adjust the length, cut, sleeve length, shape, and collar of a jacket. A preview/thumbnail may not have bearing on it's final form, but it could be a good start.

What if there were a ticker of thumbnails across the bottom or top with pics of the hair/jacket/etc. When you hover over them, they show up on your character but don't "commit" unless you click it. Then you can zoom in and turn and see what they look like up close. But that way you can get a sense of it before clicking.

I was looking at those

I was looking at those pictures of male haircuts DD posted in #67 and I got to thinking about that pony-tail slider in Hunter Robin's intro...

The only thing separating some of those haircuts, and a lot of the haircuts that 'could be but aren't shown' is the hair length and curliness. One other variable would be the part location, if there is a part, or you could call it a center-of-swirl if it's not quite a full part.

When we create a face or a body, we are provided with sliders for all sorts of things like nostril size, cheek width, brow depth, etc. So I was thinking why couldn't we start with maybe sever dozen base haircuts, but with sliders we can use to morph them into whatever we want? Select certain portions of the hair and you get a curliness slider, a length slider and a hairspray slider that controls how rigid it is when the physics engine acts on it.

Why not?

So Darth Delicious chooses the hairstyle with bangs. Then when she selects the bangs portion of the hairstyle she can adjust the edge shape, the length, the amount of curl and how much of her hair is a bang. (I can see someone choosing a medieval monk look by making their bangs go all around). Then she selects the top of her head and chooses to have a part or a swirl or have it all just come from the front. Then she chooses the back where she has sliders for body, length, curl and edge shape as well as the stiffness. Finally she selects her temples and sees sliders for coverage (from nothing to sideburns to full coverage that blends with the back/sides. Not sure if tucking hair over the ear would be an option here, because that would be a significant style change versus just a slider change.

You won't be able to start with any hairstyle and end up with any hairstyle. You would still need quite a few different options to start from (pony tails, pigtails and braids are just a few of the starters we would need besides the bangs example provided above and combinations thereof), but using the ability to morph the hairstyles we are presented with could greatly expand the number final looks, while at the same time reducing the effort needed by the professional artists.

Washuu's hair, at least the bangs in front of the hair band, is meant to evoke a crab-like imagery. two little bits hanging over the forehead, four bits sticking out each side, etc. This crab motif gets reused in later episodes, when her screensaver turns out to be a bunch of crabs crawling sideways.

All of those nice Japanese kids have, essentially, straight hair.

I noticed the same thing in CoH - almost every model of hair had straight follicles. Lots of different shapes and styles, but the hair was straight.

My own hair is only straight when it's wet and freshly brushed. By the end of the day, if it's not sticking up, wildly, in every direction, then it's wavy and tousled. Brush it while it's dry and it always has a bend or two.

Understandably, 'wavy' is my favorite type of hair.

The overabundance of straight hair in most MMO character creators drives me nuts. My own hair is naturally thick, curly/wavy, and styled in layers. I always want the same for my characters but my choices tend to be slim, especially if it's an Asian MMO.

I commented higher up that I'd specifically love to have the choice of big 1980s Glam Metal hair as it's what I chose for my character on paper when designing her but, honestly, if I can just get some generally wavy/curly hair with bangs and maybe layers at a long or medium length in CoT, I'll be happy.

Send in the Rogue clones :)

In all seriousness it would be cool to be able to add custom highlights to various styles. I wonder how hard it would be to implement a sort of free-form interface that would allow players to sprinkle in color wherever they wanted. Sadly that's not likely bound to be a trivial feature. It'd likely be easier if certain hairstyles had pre-defined "regions" that could be highlighted, but that would be very cookie-cutterish and make everyone's highlights look identical.

Two-tone hair is pretty much

Two-tone hair is pretty much a staple in recent MMO character design.

I think Archeage does it well. In that game you get a highlights slider that lets the user define how much of the hairstyle is governed by the highlight color. So you could make yourself a blonde with dark roots if you wanted to, or make yourself a brunette with blonde tips, or anything in between.

And one thing that Revelation Online does, is it also allows you to tint the highlights that appear as a result of light reflection. So your green hair could have pink or orange highlights that change as the character's head moves and the lighting changes. This is in addition to two-tone hair color.

If we could add the light reflection tint in addition to a two-tone hairstyle done the way Archeage does it, we would have the most hair color options. If we also have the ability to add different color schemes to different sections of our hair, then we would have the most creative options of any game out there.

I like to take your ideas and supersize them. This isn't criticism, it is flattery. I come with nothing but good will and a spirit of team-building. If you take what I write any other way, that is probably just because I wasn't very clear.

I don't doubt that these are features that are bound to be commonplace in games eventually. My only concern is whether these things are a tad bit too "novel" to make it into a game like CoT. As we all know CoT doesn't likely have the luxury to add every single QoL feature that's currently in the latest top-line huge budget games. If anything this might be yet another feature that won't make it in by launch but might be added later on when time permits.

But we have a professional

But we have a professional hair designer! I'm sure he could add a layer of color to some hair. Probably not 'random', 'custom', anywhere you like, though.

CoH's hairstyles were usually capable of two-tone.

Be Well!

You're right about CoX having a relatively simple "two-tone" hair feature. I would assume we'd get at least this kind of customization in CoT.

The new-ish things I was commenting on were what Huckleberry was saying about light reflection tinting and a highlights slider to merge/mix colors. Those kinds of things might still be "cutting edge" enough that they'll take too much time/effort to make it into the basic release of CoT. This is why mentioned some of those QoL type things could be added as updates after launch if necessary.

You make it sound like

You make it sound like attempts to accomplish cutting edge character creation is not in the books. Have you seen the latest videos and listened to Tannim and Doctor Tyche and the other devs talk about how cutting edge their costume creator is going to be? About how we can wear layers of costumes on top of each other?

If there is one thing that we not only want, but expect out of the spiritual successor to City of Heroes, it is having the most amazing character creator. I think you do them all a disservice when you say that something relatively simple like adding color gradients to a hair mesh is too much for them.
