Being someone who hasn't read all of the kickstarter updates in this project's past, I was pleasantly surprised when I found this particular post here...
So, I just wanted to put this idea in the pot while things are still being developed: Do you think it would be possible to add power animations that involve rocking out on a guitar? The game Brutal Legend features a guitar that can summon fireballs, call down lightning and create sonic shockwaves, and the youtube video Dubstep Guns 2 has a scene where a guy uses a guitar to blast beams of energy, create random objects out of some sort of dimensional soundwave-thingy and lay waste to his enemies with them!
Sure, it's absolutely insane, but it's the "totally freakin' awesome" kind of insane that most comic books run on in the first place!
(...Also, I may or may not have a very personal affection for this idea since I do happen to have a whole bunch of lore involving superpowered instruments I've been using in several RPs and a slowly moving attempt at a novel for a couple years now, so.... There's that...)
This character would also benefit from such a skin.
+1 to the Jukebox Hero idea!

Brings new meaning to the notion of "A Good Sound Thrashing" ...

Please, no. I've had enough of WOW and Combat Arms and their high-end weapons that looked like anything but weapons, including battle axes and assault rifles that looked like electric guitars. If you want to play "Brutal Legend", then go play that game. I really don't want the devs wasting their time on something like this when there are so many powers that actually appear in comic books that will be difficult or impossible to implement, like density/size change and stretching powers which people have been asking for since CoX issue 8, and which have yet to be implemented in any superhero game to date. There are no comic book superheroes who use guitars as the basis for superpowers.
While I have nothing against having "density/size changing and stretching powers" in CoT the simple matter of fact is that it would be relatively easy to "re-skin" battle axes and assault rifles to look like electric guitars. I'm not saying that because I'm more in favor of one of these ideas over the other. I'm just saying from the narrow point of view of "what would be easier to implement in software" I'd have to say that getting electric guitar "skins" would be far, far easier (and thus far, far more likely) than size/shape altering powers. As you point out yourself there's a reason why no computer-based superhero game has yet to produce Mister Fantastic like powersets and that reason is NOT because the Devs don't want to create them.

I'm pretty sure this kinda thing isn't something that would require as much work as a full powerset. Frankly all it consists of is one prop and a couple simple animations. It'd be more of a finishing touch sorta thing in the development process than something as meaty as a powerset.
Hmmmm... Mr. Fantastic stretchy ness?
Bilinear or Trilinear texture filtering... and every time the procedural Mesh gets stretchier... the Mip Map level switches to show a higher resolution texture version. Might not even have to use Unique Verts to tile the UV maps to make it look better even. ;)
All in theory. No clue if this would work out / look good... at all. :P
That's a toughie! :[
The animations/graphics involved wouldn't technically be the hardest part of this. The problem is how'd you control where the hands/feet go in terms of what they grab or where they step not to mention how the limbs could/should wrap around other objects.
There would have to be a lot of approximations for movement and people wouldn't necessarily be able to do a fraction of what would actually make this kind of power cool. It's the linkage between what the player would want to do and how the player controls that with a standard keyboard or console controller that's the issue here.
Solve that and the proverbial "nut" would be cracked on this challenge.

Ohh.. i guess I assumed the player would be Rooted while stretching.
Or if its a Lunge type of attack, player would attach to SkeletalMeshSockets (UE4)
As the Morph Targets change (UI sliders), the Socket might be moved to Match a specific Vertex point on the mesh, so its always Outside of the body. :[
Well that would be one way to simplify the problems, but that would also clearly be introducing a limitation that I suspect most people wouldn't like.
Again these would be simplifications of the true potential of what shape shifting "should" be able to provide.
I have no doubt that with enough time and effort the Devs could probably work up some approximations they could call "shape shifting" but it would still be far lacking in what most people would really want from this.

R.S.O. of Phoenix Rising
I'm sorry, but this thread just makes me think of ...
Tiny Tim pulls out his ukulele and shreds the swarming mobs to bits, all to the tune of "Tip-toe through the Tulips".
/end insanity
Okay, an instrument, like a flute, guitar, drum, or sexyphone would definitely make an interesting 'power animation' for ranged powers. My EQ Bard would approve!
*plays a quick melody to Charm the Sand Giant into attacking my enemy*
*plays another melody to Run Away Faster!*
Be Well!
Fireheart
I like the flute, but the sexyphone had me confused at first. Why not an uglyphone. Phones are just so annoying. Then duh ... I'm assuming its a saxophone.
We'll have to watch this, and also those fiddles over there. Folks are always complaining about there being too much sax and violins in video games....

If I understand the OP correctly then this is not using a musical instrument as a physical weapon (like your WoW example) but rather using sound produced from an instrument to manifest and/or invoke something. That I can fully see as appropriate in a superhero game, especially when you want to do a bard type hero/villain.
I don't see how any of it would actually be "wasted" since most of it could be re-used for variations (like different instruments) or even completely different categories of weapons or emanation points. Also, why the heck should we limit us to only the things that are actually used in superhero comics?
Although there is some precedent for masked avengers to use a guitar in this fashion...

Exactly! Besides, the idea of using music to invoke supernatural powers has been around since ancient times!
Music has always had magic as its subtext. For many modern people, music is still magic. So magical instruments wielded by supernatural bards seems like a fine idea to me.

Granted, Val Hallen was a superhero parody. Still...
I had several tongue-in-cheek heroes in CoX. My favorite, and one I had a lot of fun with, was Over the Heal. A VERY old empath who was always grumpy and ribbed teammates about how heroes back in the day wouldn't have whined about a little scratch like that. It would have been great to have a Quadracane or a walker to use as a prop for my powers (no pun intended).
"I don't think you understand the gravity of your situation."
It's rarely a good idea to make an absolute statement that there are NO superheroes with some type of power. :)
Johnny Dune

And for a villain...
Johnny Guitar

Then there's ValHallen (parody, sure, but a superhero), and heroes such as Herald who use other musical instruments.
