Nice. I know some are not that into lore (and I like the shiny tech updates too), but a rich and tasteful, yet distinctly classic comic book, tapestry of lore to weave my own stories into is one of the things that I really miss about CoH.

Glad to see we'll have it here at CoT also (plus cutting edge graphics and one-step-beyond CoH game mechanics--all we need is good ingame artistic style for the trifecta!)

Mostly that we think they exemplify a certain perspective - Overclock is a robot hero and will follow the rules always.

We may change them if we decide a different character exemplifies a perspective better.

Nice update!I do think this

Nice update!

I do think this could be very useful for helping us understand the alignment system. It's still a bit early to judge since for now we have little information. I am a big fan of the extra insight into the characters and their backgrounds (most of which, I presume, is public knowledge).

For future reference, I suggest you provide the full name whenever you use an acronym or abbreviation. TIAS is mentioned here and in Patchwork's profile but we have to look to this Tales from the TCPD to know it stands for Titan Institute of Advanced Sciences. At least until we have our own gamepedia (or whatever) to look up such information.

The little teaser at the start wasn't half bad, either!

Sorry about the acronym

Sorry about the acronym confusion. A lot of that text was quoted from the character's backgrounds on the comp-staff wiki, where acronyms are usually links to the relevant page (or a stub that defines the acronym). But those don't work in quoted text.

The rep system is Faction Reputation and Alignment relate to one another, but they are not the same. Alignment in general affects the way the 'world' views your character. Faction Rep can then vary based on character actions throughout play.

It's nice to see that Lady Latoki's art was done by a Native American. My own SJW sympathies aside (an acronym that, for the record, I use with about 70% irony), it helps provide a level of authenticity to the character's design that isn't always easy for an outsider to do well.

Alright...Im a bit more confused now.
When you say faction rep can change does that mean alignment cannot?

I always figured alignment to be more of an internal concept and not one of others opinion in regards to you. For example....if your character is law abiding they don't break the law but here you imply that others just think you don't break the law. Also, the way you describe alignment and reputation they seem to be the same thing for the most part with reputation being how individual groups see you and alignment being the sum and average of all the groups view points. Is my confusion just one of semantics? Are you guys using the words like 'alignment' in a way that is different that I am thinking it to be? Or is there something else I a missing?

The reason why I thought the 'weird' and 'mundane' alignments to be reputation based ones is there just seems to be no logical correlation to the 3-axis alignment system you described in a previous update. Has the alignment system changed drastically from the previous description? Is this another case of real world use and in game use of the words being different? Am I just missing the connection?

This reminds me of the alignments in the Steve Jackson game, Illuminati Deluxe.

Peaceful is opposite of Violent
Liberal is opposite of Conservative
Straight is opposite of Weird (in the "Freaks versus Straights" sense of the 1960s, not sexuality)
Communist is the opposite of Government (for some reason)
Criminal has no opposite (as much for humor as sarcastic realism)
Fanatic is opposite of itself (any two different fanatic groups will tend to promote their own agendas so single-mindedly as to oppose each other)

This is also from the original update:

Kickstarter wrote:

The only person that can truly decide whether your character is a hero or a villain is you. That’s the philosophy behind our alignment system.

and

kickstarter wrote:

NPCs will always have their opinions, but in the end, it’s you who determines what your character is.

In fact most of the kickstarter speaks of alignment from a characters internal point of view and not how other perceive you. It talks about a characters 'willingness' to act in a certain ways right in the description for the 3 axis.
Almost everything directed me to think that the alignment system was going to be a broad personal moral compass for the characters which would be influenced by choices of an ethical nature. While reputation would be how individual groups would view your character determined by direct actions within the game.
In essence, I saw the alignment system as a way to define yourself in the context of the game and reputation as the way others saw you.
There was an example (that I am unable to find) about Batman in relation to the alignment and reputation systems. It basically said that 'who' Batman is differs from what other 'think' Batman is and that the alignment and reputation systems will be able to offer that kind of duality.
I was looking forward to playing the outwardly respected by the masses villain who tries to build a criminal empire or the commonly viewed as a criminal hero who never breaks any laws.
What it seems like we are getting is one system that reflects general opinion of your character and one system that reflects a more specific opinion of your character and this disappoints me.

I like the early Anthem art better than the later.

I have 3 daughters (and am a man.) It is funny. I showed the art to my daughters (without saying anything) and they all said that the later art was all about being sexy and that they preferred the earlier art.

I found this rather funny, as the early Anthem seemed to me more sexy than the later Anthem.

Regardless, good job on the update!

To me, this seems like an easy workaround from what Tannim has said.

You simply set your character as you want him/her to be generally perceived based on your character's false-but-apparent or misunderstood behavior in order to get the reaction you want from the game, and then explain your character's true nature in your bio.

Yes, only you and those who read your bio will know the character's true nature, but, hey, it's supposed to be an outward deception or misperception anyway, and the game NPC's will behave as they should.

I think this'd be fun!

Quote: If alignment was
Quote:

If alignment was solely a player-facing system of morals - the context of anything relating to the game is lost.

I disagree. Alignment could have an effect on mission completion goals and the rewards offered. Lawful character might get more reward for completing a mission under lawful parameters and less for not doing so. If too many times a different parameter was taken your alignment could change which results in some kind of penalty such as reduced rewards for a period (like how defeat in CoH resulted in your xp being divided to pay off the debt). This need not be heavy handed by including alignment parameter in every mission.
I do realize that this system would be complex to design and write for but I also think it would be very rewarding and enjoyable. The underlying concept of separation between alignment and reputation was how I pictured the systems.

Quote:

The alignment is system is how the player percieves their character and can have an affect how NPCs view the character too.

This is where I have the disconnect. How you perceive yourself and how other perceive you are separate in my mind. One could be alignment (I personally think of it as more of a set of personal rules one follows...more on this in a sec) but the other can only be described as reputation.

I think my major issue is with the terminology of 'alignment'. I have always viewed alignment in games as a series of moral and ethical lines that determine what the alignment is. These can be as broad or narrow as the game decides but those lines do not get crossed without alignment changing. Again the game can decide how lenient they want to be with this by allow the draconian one strike you are out forever to the forgiving fluctuation of alignment based on a characters current feelings and anything in between.

I thought the concept of internal moral and ethical dilemma fit so perfect into a superhero game that CoT was going to offer players a chance to experience this kind of personal battle on their own terms. What I mean is that alignment would affect only situations of a character nature. If you were a truly lawful character breaking into a military base and borrow the latest crime fighting gadget to help you defeat Captain bad guy would have an impact on a characters alignment and so the character might not take that option and instead face captain bad guy without the gadget knowing the fight will be more difficult. If your character took the easier path more often their alignment might slip which would affect the options available to you later.
Reputation would be purely based on perceivable actions. If my hero decided to break into the base after all but was able to hide that he did it from everyone then his reputation should not be affected even if his alignment was. If I was to go out and kill a hobo and no one knew, why would anyone's opinion of me change?

I am not saying that the systems of alignment and reputation are bad and despite my dislike of the way you are using the word 'alignment' I don't think it is wrong... just different. I am just disappointed the system was not how I originally pictured it.

The problem with 'fixing' an example is it seldom gets to the heart of the issue.
I am sure I can find a way to make any concept I want fit within the parameters of the game and for those I cannot I simply will not create. It does not change my disappointment that the system is not what I misunderstood it to be.

Alignment is what people think you do, in public. It is, in some ways, your reputation with the world as a whole - while factions are about people getting to know the inner you a little better.

Alignments change based on what people see you do - that's because they affect how people react to your character. If a cop sees you kicking the head in of a surrendered crook, you're going to see changes to how people react - your Violent rating goes up.

Thus, not all actions change alignment - all cats are grey in the dark, after all.

I'm going to make a compositional critique of this release.

I honestly think that it was a mistake to "data dump" 4 at a time. You would have been better off going in pairs. Do 2 at a time.

Why? Because by the time I got to the 3rd out of 4, my eyes were already glazing over and the WALL OF TEXT CRITS YOU!!! effect was in full force. I had reached my capacity and fell into TL;DR land and simply skipped over the rest of the release. And while I'm sure this isn't true for everyone (obviously), I have to wonder how many people it is true for.

So, to be honest, I rather have weekly releases of info on 2 NPCs every week for 6 weeks than I would on having 4 NPCs for 3 weeks (or every other week for 6 weeks). It offers lore in "more digestible chunks" that would ultimately be more satisfying, methinks.

YMMV of course.

I'm not usually a fan of Lore updates -- not because I don't appreciate all the Lore work being done, but because it feels like a spoiler to me; stuff I'd rather learn as I play the game than ahead of time. (This is definitely an "it's not you; it's me" thing.)

But I really enjoyed this update. I'll admit I didn't read the whole thing (that weird spoiler-phobia again), but I got enough to get the flavour of each character, and I like what I see. I like the fresh take on signature characters and the efforts being made to ensure they are not just re-skins of popular characters from other superhero worlds.

I look forward to meeting these folks in CoT and fighting alongside/against them!

Am I the only one who liked the older anthem composition better?

Nope. I like them both, but, while the newer Anthem is better rendered, I prefer the older concept quite a bit better. I'd love to see it as well-rendered.

You could argue that the second design is more original or interesting, but I don't find it as strong and classic feeling as the first.

I find that while both costumes are good, I also like the Original Anthem look better. I'd have to say that's largely due to the fact that the bulky "mitt" of New Anthem's metal arm makes her feel off/un-balanced to me. If New Anthem had a simpler/smaller/sleeker hand design, I wouldn't have any issue with it.

I love Lady Latoki. Both her characterization (more in-the-background, doesn't care about the limelight) and the costume (all the little details and bits and pieces).

Nice. I won't comment on the alignment/ faction rep situation since we haven't seen it's function in action yet although I admit I too felt a more immersive use of alignment you'd been interesting... but commenting will make no odds, we just have to wait and see.
