Simulacrum/Jaesung ‘Jason’ Park

Jae-sung ‘Jason’ Park is the son of Ki-moon Park and Yumi Park. Ki-moon is an applied physicist at Santiago-Yuri Research Center, and is Lead Researcher for the Human Enhancements department. Yumi is a behavioral psychologist who works at the Helping Hearts Rehabilitation Clinic.

Jason is autisitic. While able to attend regular schooling, he has always had difficulty connecting socially with other people and his hypersensitivity to sounds has caused him great stress. His ability to function in society was due partially to the efforts of his mother; Yumi's patience and expertise was a boon, and she has always been the closest person in his life. In contrast, his father Ki-moon has always seen Jason as a problem to solve, and though he only wants his son to succeed in life and be happy, there has been a large distance between them.

Jason was always an anxious child, who disliked the outdoors and had trouble relating to other children. He enjoyed reading, and especially loved the visual arts. He also had a particular fixation on comic books and the characters within them.

Although not one of the rare "autistic savants", he holds a near-encyclopedic knowledge of comic book characters and events due to his obsession with them. His stims include rocking from one foot to the other when standing idly, and repeatedly rubbing his fist in his palm.

When he was 15 his father insisted on including Jason in a trial for an experimental device piloted by the Tyrosine Coporation, an implant called the Cognitive Lingual Unification Embedded Object, or CLUEO. ("Clueo" can also mean "to hear" in Latin.) The CLUEO is a device similar to a cochlear implant, in that it uses electrical stimulation as a sensory input through a surgically-implanted device.

But where a cochlear implant takes sound and translates it to electrical signals in the auditory nerve, the CLUEO works more like a radio communication device, allowing two or more people with implants to communicate with one another. The implants interface directly with the brain, and permit thoughts to transmit back and forth. Trials were optimistic, and one unintended side effect of the device that was related among test subjects was a closeness that they shared.

The trial phase for the device had begun which sought to include individuals with impairments that may benefit from the device. People who were mute, or had brain damage such as aphasia that prevented proper speech. There were even a couple of subjects in persistent comas who showed brain function but could not regain consciousness.

Ki-moon felt that his son might benefit from the device, and that his communication difficulties made him a proper subject. Yumi was concerned about Jason's ability to cope with the device even if it did work, but could not convince Ki-moon and was eventually persuaded that it might help their son.

The CLUEO proved to be a disaster, however. Jason's mind could not cope with the new stimulation it received, and in addition he may have possessed latent mutant abilities which manifested in response to the changes in his brain function. Regardless, he did not respond to the device in any way similar to the hundreds of other subjects tested.

His brain underwent a radical form of lateralization, with his left hemisphere atrophying and his right hemisphere being hyperactive. His auditory system essentially shut down; no physical damage could be observed but it no longer showed activity. The incident left him completely deaf.

The project was set back by this incident, but not halted, as the incident was not repeated with any other subjects. The Park family was given compensation and Jason was provided with the best care available. He was trained to communicate in ASL, which he seemed to pick up with uncanny ease, in contrast to the slow speech development he experienced as a child. His mother was already fluent in ASL as part of her training, and his father did his best to learn though he never gained full proficiency.

The accident had the ironic effect of easing some of his anxiety; now that he could no longer hear, he was no longer subject to the noises which terrified him throughout his life. And he found support and kinship within the deaf community that he never experienced before as a hearing person, even among others who are autistic. His autism wasn't "cured"; he still has trouble communicating and connecting with others, but with the reduction of his anxiety he began to become more expressive and confident.

He also eventually learned of his psychic abilities. They came to him in flashes at first; impressions he'd receive at random, or sometimes when struggling to communicate with a person he'd "push" a picture to them which would startle them. Once he realized what he could do, it did not take long to control it, and it became a new obsession alongside his comic books. Jason had always been a fan of CapeChaser, and through that site he found a burgeoning superhero team looking for members. He put on a disguise and chose the name "Simulacrum", in reference to his ability to project images. Wearing a suit (even an improvised one from household objects) made him feel invincible, and he swallowed his fear so that he could finally become the hero he always felt he could be and bring his own world to life.
