Top 10 shows I want on the DC Universe

The DC Universe streaming service is about to launch and it hopes to revolutionize superhero entertainment. Well with that, they need to have the original content to back it up, and so far we have six: Titans, Doom Patrol, Swamp Thing, Stargirl, Young Justice: Outsiders, and Harley Quinn. DC says they aim to always have original programming every week, so they better bring it.

Here's the Top 10 shows I want on the DC Universe. This includes animation and live-action, though with more emphasis on the former since DC excels in it and we already have four live-action shows compared to two animated. I'll go with some obvious, and some a little creative if I can.

----

#10. Green Lantern: The Animated Series

A series that was short-lived. This CGI animated series followed the titular Green Lantern Corps and was well-received despite technically being a tie-in to the ill-fated 2011 movie. CN pulled the plug due to bad toy sales and the movie's failure, but on the DC Universe it could get a new lease on life. The voice of the star, Josh Keaton, has stated alluded to the idea of him being very interested if DC revived the series for the service, so I'm putting it here on the grounds that I believe it should.

#9. Nightwing: The Animated Series

Batman has had tons of animated series to call his own, and now Harley Quinn is getting one. Why not give one to the sidekick-turned-leading man Nightwing his own animated series? This would be the perfect chance to help disassociate Dick Grayson as Robin, as many non-comic readers still think he's the Boy Wonder despite having been Nightwing since the '80s.

The premise would be simple, it follows Dick Grayson after he split from Batman and tells about his adventures in his adopted home of Bludhaven. Like the comics, it could also reference past events like his time with the Teen Titans, and his journey to being a solo superhero. The series would draw upon the various iterations of the comics, like the 13 year run and the Rebirth series. It would also follow Nightwing as he rekindles his relationship with Batman, and eventually they see each other as equals. Though word of advice: Don't go with Dick saying "F*** Batman".

#8. Animal Man

Going with the idea the dark streaming series like Titans, Doom Patrol and Swamp Thing, another one to add to the collection is Animal Man. The character, who could use the power of any animal (before Vixen existed btw) was a D-lister originally (and you could argue he still is, but a much more well-liked one) after his 1965 debut, but his series was reinvented in by a then-rising Grant Morrison in the late '80s. The series, which combines family drama, animal rights activism, superheroics and meta fiction, is one of the most acclaimed series of all time (it could be to Morrison as to what Swamp Thing was to Moore).

Because of his relative obscurity, but acclaimed stories and mature aspects, he would be best suited for a series rather than a movie. Ideally, an Animal Man series would take primarily after Morrison's run and only change when needed.

#7. Batman Beyond Reboot

Something that needs to happen, the beloved Batman Beyond series never saw animation again even though the legacy was continued in the comics. After nearly twenty years, I think it's time to revisit the world of Beyond. Given all the comics they've released since then, and the concept itself being so open to different possibilities, they could do so many awesome things with this series. Move over Bruce, Terry is in town!

#6. Static Shock Live-Action Series

Milestone's breakout character would make for a perfect live-action series, of a lighter tone similar to what Stargirl promises to be. There's huge potential for a fun and modern take on the character, while still maintaining the social commentary that adds without beating you over the head with it. The series itself would take place in Dakota, and other characters like Icon, Rocket, Hardware, and Kobalt. Granted, one major issue people might have is the similarities to the CW's Black Lightning, but other than being African-Americans with electric powers, they're pretty different characters. Plus, it's not like there's a quota on electric black guys.

#5. Earth 2: Society

This one would be very experimental, but I think this as an animated series would only be possible on streaming. The premise is that this is set on an alternate universe aptly named Earth-2, telling a story of a vastly different DC universe than the one you know. It stars the Wonders of the World, a team of superheroes banded together to protect the world from the forces of Apokolips and within the planet itself.

In this version, the Trinity of Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman died protecting the world from Darkseid's forces. This leaves a new generation of heroes to take over from the old, and continue the name of the Wonders. As stated, the alternate universe nature gives way to all sorts of different interpretations for the various characters, much like what Ultimate Marvel did to Marvel. This series wouldn't have a status quo as much as the mainstream ones, because it's set in a new world with new rules. You have Batman being Dick Grayson and his sidekick Robin being his son that he had with Barbara (now-deceased), the Huntress and Power Girl duo, Green Lantern still being Alan Scott magic and all, Superman being the black Val, Red Tornado being Lois Lane in an android, and more. Doesn't this sound exciting to you?

#4. Teen Titans

One of the defining animated series of the 2000s, its influence is still being felt to this day. The Timm meets anime style of the action series was a major hit and reintroduced Teen Titans to a new generation. Now, its legacy is ending on the most frustrating twist ever seen in a kids' show and a crappy gag spin-off... okay, forget I said that. But given that it was stated that if Teen Titans Go! To the Movies was successful, that they'd bring back the original series, they better honor this. The movie made its budget back four times over, and teased the return of the team at the end credits. All the fans of the original series hated the Go! fans, but now they might actually have to thank them.

As for the show itself, I'd continue what the ending was teasing, maybe with a recap because it's been so long, and go from there. They could make it darker (but not too dark) since it's not on CN, and introduce all sorts of new characters and plots to the setting while maintaining the core.

#3. Question

Vic Sage is a brilliant detective/conspiracy theorist with a blank face, and one of the most memorable characters from Justice League: Unlimited. He would be a perfect fit for a grittier live-action series, one where he travels across the country on the tail of a conspiracy. We would explore his psyche, the world of crime, and just how crappy it is to be the Question, but hey, someone's got to do it.

#2. WildStorm Universe

You know what the definition of wasted potential is? WildStorm is a good candidate. In the '90s, during the wave of new comic book companies trying to inch their way into success, one such company is Jim Lee's WildStorm. Once independent and published through Image Comics, DC bought the company as a whole in '98, and in theory this should've been very good for the universe. Instead, DC treated it like the redheaded stepchild and downplayed the presence of the company as much as possible. In fact, many suspect that DC only bought WildStorm so they could get Jim Lee as well as all the other creative talent involved with it. A shame.

Now is the time to capitalize on this universe. It's different from DC, in that it's darker, features an alternate history where interstellar travel and alien races are common knowledge, superheroes are often working for the government, and superpowers are linked to four different types of metahuman (hybrids, gen-actives, seedlings and century babies). It has its own mythos, one that would be well represented in an adult animated series. This is the universe that gave the world Grifter, Midnighter, Gen13, and of course, WildC.A.T.s and Stormwatch.

#1. DC Animated Universe Reboot

There hasn't been a comic book universe that's quite as beloved by fans as the DCAU, considered to be the pinnacle of superhero storytelling. Lasting for a whopping fourteen years, the DCAU was something that shouldn't have even been possible on network TV, and no one has attempted such a thing since then. Now that we're on streaming, the prospect for a new DCAU is very much there. DC has done a reboot of sorts using the animated movies, but they should do the same with the shows. While I doubt it could surpass the original, it could still be a beast of it's own.

As for what shows could be on it? I did suggest Nightwing, while Batman Beyond could be in the future while Earth-2 is in a multiverse that crosses over at some point. There would of course be a Justice League show, but what else. I'd like a new Batman, a new Superman and a Wonder Woman series at long last, plus they could do things like Justice League Dark, Suicide Squad, and who knows what else. The possibilities are endless here, and for that reason I think it deserves to be the number one spot on the list.

----

I left a lot off. Trust me, doing these top ten lists is not an easy task, and there's so much I'd like to see. I hope the DC Universe service does the best it can, and we get content that can't be done on network TV. I hope you like it!

I'd love to see them do a

I'd love to see them do a better Grifter animated series. I bought his comic in New 52 and it didn't feel quite like the Grifter I knew :( I wasn't expecting him to be part of WildCats, but come on!

Also would love to see Gen-13/DV8 in animation!
