We all know Superman works at the Daily Planet, but no matter how much happens during the day with him saving the day he is able to keep his day job. I just don't see how this is possible, he must be really good at his job, have some really good alibis, or it just happens to really work out with his reporting gig - "I was out doing a story"
My question to everyone is, will your character(s) have a day job in Titan City and what will that job be? And do you think you would be able to keep it going with the daily struggles of a super hero? What are some of the alibis you would have to use out of a heated questionnaire from your boss. Would you let any of your co-workers in on your secret to help have someone to backup your story?
My character works at a weapon/tech development factory and it is her family business so she is pretty invested in making sure she is present and has her whole heart into making it succeed. So she is only able to do vigilante work on her off hours.

Most of my characters tend to be teen heroes so they just hero after school.
At least one of my characters robs the badguys they defeat.
I did have an idea where a hero's secret identity is the stunt man on a show based on his hero identity.

The teen hero I mentioned in another thread Malevolent Twilight works at a Tent Rental Company and his parents friends own the company and are trying to give him a chance. He sets up tents at important events around the city, that's how he get's all his inside scoop. He often is late or leaves early but he get's the job done so the owner gives him some passes but he is definitely on thin ice.

It'd be an interesting part of a Superhero to have them have to continuously get new jobs or be looking for one because their hero work makes it hard to maintain employment.

One of mine is a Daytrader.

Nope, no job. My backstory won't allow it.
Heroes get remembered, but Legends never die.

My main will use some form of "contractor" work as a general cover for his activities "heroic" or "villainous". Though I would presume his primary action is through black markets or under channels.
Due to this housing wise I'd suspect he would live in rather terrible accommodation. Thus likely stashes his gear elsewhere. The contractor cover at least helps for at least somewhat covering any direct transfer of funds or explaining cash etc. Rather not say have a hostile encounter with the long arm of the law, if he's not got his firearms and some body armour.
One of mine that I posted on these forums is going to be a student. Kenny will be somewhat lucky, because his father bore the curse before him. Being a doctor, Walter will be able to provide ample reason s why his sons had to leave early or be absent what have you. Of course, this means Kenny is expected to bear the curse, mostly without complaint, and still do as well as he can in school. That means while Kenny might miss some classes, he'll have ALL the notes and homework and will be expected to take the tests.
Some of my others ones will probably be 'full timers', and at least one wil work at a company that's owned by a friend, and is in on the secret.
My main Rotten Luck being an undead zombie like fellow has a hard time with normal jobs. He employed by the city for clean up work and garbage man. Being undead he is immune to hazardous waste so he one of the folks who clean up after a super villain fight.
One of my villains Hot Wire runs a pirate network with illegal gambling and internet for villains.

Personal rules of good roleplay
1.) Nothing goes as planned.
2.) If it goes as planned it's not good RP
I've always envisioned LS as a full time hero. Taking in some sort of stipend for being "on-call" by the police and kinda just making ends meet. I suppose given her abilities, particularly the speed, she would make a good courier. Heck that's half the missions in Paragon City. "Go pick this *thing* up for me" and the "Thing" happens to be surrounded in Clocks or Freaks or Carnival. Courier gotta courie, so down go the Clocks or Freaks or Carnival. Given her nature I think she could work as some sort of trainer taking on new heroes and keeping them from immediately killing themselves. She could also be a Japanese-English translator. She'd fit right in with that visiting group of magical girls. Although, given my lacking nature in language skills, that's not something I'm likely to play out.

How old my main is, will depend a bit on the release of the game, however, she'll be just shy of 18, having moved back in with her dad (again...as she ran away at first) after being let go of the project. So, teen, with a parent, getting what's basically being retirement pay.
Going back to high school for her senior year. Less for needing it and more to establish some sort of normalcy and meeting new people and developing a new background (besides one of being a half human half kumiho made into a living weapon of war) in what is basically a new life.
So far the plan is for her to also have gotten into owning a parking garage (figure Titan City is a big city) maintaining a secret small base in a secret basement of it :)
Black Falcon made a number of commercials for this world's Cooks Electronics. She used that money to buy into a few Trendy bars and a nightclub.
she earns enough to be free most of the time, checking in for a few hours once or twice a week.
Talos survives on Bounties. Bounties on supers pay a LOT. But he tells his neighbors he sells motorcycles.

My main, Culach, made quite a bit of money as a government consultant and still does on occasion.
Jennie Frost is the head of a multi-billion dollar family-owned company.
Mighty Mite is an EMT, and his abilities allow him to get to people and places most EMTs can't, nor could they survive.
Abramelin was able to prove ownership of banking accounts that were gaining interest while he was missing for a REALLY long time.
Sparrowfire inherited some money and also received a sizeable amount of money from her former employer due to improprieties.
Street Revenant is homeless and survives on the goodwill of those in the community he protects.

'Perfect Perry' or Peregrine Lucius Smythe is a fashion model and VP of Marketing for the family Corporation and textiles conglomerate (Smythe Co), which he owns. That's how he can afford his Titan Burger habit.
Astarte Tsovinaar is a ten-thousand-year-old antiquities dealer and is collecting interest on her ancient investments.
Signe Svarte, the Black Valkyrie, knew the guy who started the first Swiss Bank... She is only about five-thousand years old.
Both of these ancient ladies work with museums and scholars as translators of ancient languages and both use ancient magical powers to attract good fortune and avoid disasters.
Kitsuneko effectively lives on an alternate plane of existence, where she is the scion of a great noble House. She trades in exotic materials and items, in both directions.
Adiamante and The Innocent are still Minors who are supported by their loving families.
Emerald Astor, who heroes under the moniker of 'Spiral Dance' is a Day Trader, Financier, and Stock Trader for her family Corporation, and for herself, of course. Her stipend is a percentage of her profits, so she's comfortably well off. Yet her lifestyle is fairly spartan. Like Perfect Perry, she's been a champion Martial Artist and still collects some residuals from that.
I used to have a homeless hero named 'Lost Lost', but most of my characters are comfortably well off.

It's interesting to see everyone's ideas about what their characters' "day jobs" would be. I usually gave at least a vague consideration for that for most of my characters in CoH.
But related to doing that I used to find it particularly entertaining to pick specific spots in the game where I RP'd that my characters physically lived. Sometimes it'd be in one of the high-rise buildings or other times it'd be in some back alley somewhere. It always helped to give me a sense of orientation for my RP with those characters.
Turns out I opted for a Mogul building in CoT so I guess that provides me with a "default building" that many of my characters could hang out at. Still even with that I'm looking forward to exploring the city and establishing other new random "hideouts" with at least some of characters.
