Street Buffs

Just reading the fishing and autograph threads. For the record, I loathe boring time sink activities like fishing in games even more than in real life. The autograph idea sounds kinda fun, and encourages a little sociability, so thumbs up for that.

I had another idea that might add a little spice. How about if while out on 'patrol'/street-sweeping, etc., when you actually rescue a civilian you have a chance of getting a random buff for some limited time. I'm not talking about just finding a gang of toughs standing around and beating them up. I mean actually helping someone who is being menaced. (Think of the purse snatch tug-of-war that you saw all the time in CoH) So you take out/chase off the bad guy and the citizen gives you some kind of 'reward' for your help. It could be something as simple as "Oh, thank you! I make these organic non-GMO energy bars, Have one!" and you get a minor health buff for ten minutes or something.

This wouldn't happen every time, maybe 15-20%. But occasionally (say another 15% out of the times you do get it) You get a major buff or maybe an XP bonus or temp power. "Y'know, I'm a researcher in a lab downtown. This prototype gadget might help you!"(temp power) or "I happen to be a reporter. Look for your name in my column this week!"(XP bonus)

For me, this idea makes it worthwhile for high-level characters to occasionally interrupt their busy hero-ing schedules to help one of the 'little people'.

Ha! Just thought of a villain spin-off. Maybe on the street you occasionally find a civilian effectively retaliating against a thug. Like the opposite of the purse tug-of-war. Like a lil' old lady smacking a gang member with her umbrella. You stop and help the criminal and he gives you a cut of the loot! "Hey buddy, glad you happened along. Here, I'll split 60-40 with ya. Uhh, never mind, you take it all!"

This may or may not overlap or play into the whole mission building mechanic. Still a little fuzzy on that. Just looking for ways to add some variety and the occasional surprise.

The rescued citizens of CoX

The rescued citizens of CoX used to drop the occasional Insp on you, this could replace that, as CoT will not have Insps.

If they caught up to you and

If they caught up to you and were able to thank you properly. The equivalent in COT would be a direct shot of reserves. Saving citizens always yielded xp and inf. However, most of the places where citizens were being harassed were very low level and hardly worth it for any advanced characters. Which kind of makes sense. Superman's not going to get a whole lot of xp for stopping a mugging. The shot of reserves could actually be quite a boon to players who are returning from the hospital or recently exhausted.

I had kind of thought that

I had kind of thought that the dropped INS was from the baddie you just trounced. But yeah, in this case, even if the low-life is too low for you to get decent XP, there's a 'chance' to get something worthwhile.

Au contraire! Superman is

Au contraire! Superman is quite famous for the 'kitten in the tree' rescue as part of his whole PR makeup. Not in the middle of fighting a super-baddie for the fate of Metropolis, I grant you. But we're talking about between missions, here. Superman NEEDS to look caring and empathetic BECAUSE he's so powerful.

I would further submit that Experience (as a currency) can be translated into Reputation. That's why we got Influence in CoH.

And Batman, Superman's superior in many minds, built his career and maintains his reputation 'on the street', as it were.

This brings up an interesting question.

You use the word "reputation" loosely, but the word has a specific meaning in CoT. There are factions and reputation is the word being used to measure our alliance with each. But what about a reputation with the general public? Where is that measured? Or is that what INFluence is? As a reputation-neutral currency, influence can be measured as the ability to influence people to do what you want, right? So that would be regardless of whether it is out of fear or out of fandom.

Or will the public's responses to you be a function of the three-alignment system?

[hr]I like to take your ideas and supersize them. This isn't criticism, it is flattery. I come with nothing but good will and a spirit of team-building. If you take what I write any other way, that is probably just because I wasn't very clear.

This would seem to be a good way to immerse the player into the atmosphere of the game. A Hero receives praise in lawful areas or zones, but when they venture into the lawless zones ... well, let's just say that unkind words were uttered with emphatic tones.

I definitely dig the saving

I definitely dig the saving citizen for random bonus mechanic, but it's very blueside. Most villains I can think of are far above helping a purse snatcher. On the other hand, a greyer villain may simply menace the purse-snatcher away for being scum.

What might fit the lore of villains could be to "recruit" the crook, he could even become a temp pet, taken far enough.

No Warbird. I was using the

No Warbird. I was using the direct and most common definition of experience in the gaming verse. IE something that makes superman "better." Saving that first kitten in a tree as a kid might have taught him something more drastic about courage and doing the right thing and what-not but as a full on adult Superman I doubt he learns that much, or gains that much experience, from saving a kitten from a tree. No I think it's actually more accurate for Superman to gain the equivalent of Reserves from cat-in-tree-saving. That interaction gives him something to draw upon later, something "reserved" if you will, for a time of challenge.
