Truly truly sad news today that the one and only Stan Lee passed away today. He has to be considered the foremost comics figure of all time. The industries of comics and motion pictures have been changed forever by his talents.
So I'd propose some type of memoriam in game to Stan Lee because his work over decades is what inspired our love of superheroes and paved the way for games like City of Heroes. Champions Online, Marvel Heroes and even DCUO!
RIP Stan Lee. Excelsior we all say together! You will never be forgotten!

It'd probably be more work than MWM would like to invest, but it'd be a neat reversal if the Stan Lee tribute were a main character in a very popular in-game TV show.

I love the idea of some kind official memorial but additionally, it'd be great to have a random NPC that we'd encounter in the game world which looks like him. Really take "Make anyone" to 11. He would spawn in random places doing different things.
An MMO version of all the cameos he had in the various films.

There are some great ideas here. I am reminded of the time we endured Adam West passing. I have mixed thoughts on in game tributes, but at this point I certainly can't object. If we do have tributes we may want to make them as future proof and scalable as possible. There are many others that could pass, and I'd think we would want to have a plan on how to handle so every is treated as fairly as we reasonably can. Just for the sake of discussion, here are some examples pulling from the acting pool:
Lou Ferigno, The Hulk
Linda Carter, Wonder Woman
Robert Downy Jr., Tony Stark/Iron Man
Ryan Reynolds, Deadpool

I don't think there should be plans to make any DC or Marvel figure a tribute in CoT in any form, even a vague one...that's just asking for a lawsuit. I agree to something for Stan...but anything that references any of his cameos is out of the question as they are property of Marvel. It should be nothing except a tribute to his real life person; make no reference to any film he has cameo'd in.

This. As much as Stan Lee is idolised and respected, including by myself, I don't really feel it should happen. Marvel flicked up a lawsuit with a character creator so a whole Stan Lee reference doesn't sound good.

No reason not to ask for permission then. Show them what we would like to do and ask, "Is this okay?" If they say no, then that's that. If however they say Yes . . .
I doubt they'd need permission to add in a tribute to deceased,real person. I'm just saying they shouldn't do anything in the tribute that references anything in Marvel, like any of his cameo's or any saying's or phrases that Marvel could try and say they somehow have the right to, no matter how absurd.

Agreed. The only reason I said Excelsior for him, is that's not a hero but just a word Stan said.
Also, I don't want to see the tributes to others. Linda Carter for instance, isn't Stan Lee and it doesn't matter if she was Wonder Woman. So is Gal Gadot and what, if she dies, put her in game? No. :p
I'm willing to agree that Stan can be a special case though.
Stan Lee is definitely celebrity enough to reference safely in really any media. You can't copywrite actual people and their legacy.
I'm all in on Lee Stanley except maybe make it a bit less on the nose :p Thinning combover and oversized aviators are almost enough to make the point.
Also, if you're phobic of a lawsuit, the less obvious the reference the better, giving more plausible deniability.

The idea of a building called Excelsior! is a good one.
As Stan Lee was a scenarist, why not make the Main PNJ of the building EXCELCIOR! mission creator (AKA mission architect. I put a C instead of a S as a mistake in the name so as law pursuit could not really happens since it's some "parody"), the one who explains you how to use the mission creator ?

I don't necessarily disagree with this sentiment, however whenever a prominent personality from the acting pool dies there are similar requests for in game tributes.

Some consensus about how to approach in game tributes may be good. What qualifies for a tribute? Conversely what does not? Is there a limit to the number? Are they permanent, seasonal, or temporary? Is there a guideline on the size or visibility of the tribute?

I don't think there would be anything wrong with using Excelsior as that was his phrase and not one of his character's phrases in a movie. I agree to your second point too; Stan is a special case because he was, arguably, the creator of the superhero genre...at least the most influential one. I wouldn't expect a tribute to any actor or individual, non-CoT super hero.

I didn't think Adam West should be in game either. Ask a younger generation person who Adam West is and they'll likely go, "No idea."
They may say that about Stan Lee too, but at least Stan Lee has a bigger call in the genre of superheroes. Adam West was just an actor who played a campy version of character.
Is Stan Lee's name copyrighted? I don't think so. Stan is a celebrity. I don't see any legal issues in a simple tribute. is there a legal type Dev who could weigh in on this?
If we can give even a simple tribute, I would love to do it.
Stan's creations was such a part of so many lives it would be a shame if we could not do this.

Champions Online just added free Stan Lee-style glasses to the game to honor Stan Lee and mentioned it as honoring his legacy in a news post today. So, other IP's referencing him is seemingly not off limits.
I'm partial to the "doorman at the Excelsior Hotel" idea, but only because I am worried about how trigger-happy Marvel got with lawsuits before they were bought out by the even more litigious Walt Disney Company. In an ideal world having a "Lee Stanley" or similar character mentoring new heroes would be preferable IMO, but only because Stan Lee has contributed so much to modern superheroes that he feels like the father of the genre, even though plenty of superheroes (Batman, Superman, etc.) predated him. He created so many superheroes that it would be awesome if he represented a mentoring NPC to our heroes.

I like the idea of a superhero named Excelsior. Also a statue in a park somewhere, with an npc that's very familiar tending to the area. He's a guide to new characters and gives some early tips/missions to get people started.
Mentioning him or a small nod to him like those glasses (aviators pretty much) which are not in an actual trademark is one thing but using his likeness for a character is another thing entirely.
I would still love to see a grey haired man in avies giving tips to new heroes but it might be a bit risky without some sort of consent from his estate, which is unlikely
