Not sure if this has come up before but something I hope is avoided is a dumb filter.
Turning words like
Assassin into
******in or
"Classic untold terror bat it was, dead now." into
"Cl***i* ***old terror ba* ** was, dead now."
Is is far easier to ignore "Your an xassx" then it is "Your an @-$.S"
because if someone is trying to avoid a char filter, they will.
I'd much rather filter efforts go toward filtering "Buy CoT [[[{- Loot ---}{( Fer CheAP #@@@ COTG ...[[[]].OLD"""D0t+C0.M" being spammed in trade chat in walls of text so large I can't read any other chat type.
If it's not to late I have a direct tells request. A filter setting to ONLY receive tells from friends. If I turn that one and don't friend gold spammers I can turn off world chat and pretend they don't exist.
Yes I assume CoT will have the same problem almost every other game has shortly after launch and typically for a few years after.
The line between knowing and understanding is often blurred.
Cute Kitsune the Anti Villain of Phoenix Rising.
I have more fervor then empathy, I still like you.~Me to a friend
It applies here too, I'm passionate not hostile.
In addition, please give us the option to toggle any and all filters.
Spurn all ye kindle.
Yep, what Cinnder said. CoH had a checkbox that would allow you to turn on or off a chat filter.
+1 for that.
I got chills! They're multiplyin'. And I'm losin' control. Cuz the power, I'm supplyin'. Why it's ELECTRIFYIN'!!
Yet, I agree that the chat filter should be... somewhat 'smart'. Perhaps even with different levels of strictness? Filtering 'assassin' is a bit asinine.
Be Well!

On the topic of chat filters, you know what I would love to see? This might be hard to do, but I would love to see a customizable client-side filter, preferably one that accepts regular expressions. There is a slightly-against-the-EULA third-party program for FFXIV that provides this functionality, and it's incredibly useful for filtering out gil spammers. While it doesn't deal with the ultimate problem of the spammers themselves, it does put the ability to filter out common spam phrases in the hands of the player, who can react much faster to changes in spammer phrasing than the game designers.
Spam is a pretty big problem in FFXIV on the smaller servers. I didn't really want to resort to using a third party program, but since I've started using it I've gotten like....5 spam /tells a week, instead of the several a minute I was getting in the hub cities. Not everyone would use such a feature, but having it available if possible would go a long way towards helping players feel empowered about any spam situation that occurs.
This is why I actually like some of the chat based addons that some other MMO's have. I forget the one that I had for WoW, but it filtered all the messages in the channels, and if it caught something "irregular" it would store a note and allow you to review and then "one click" report the player.
It wasn't perfect, I did get (out of several hundred over the course of a year) 2 or 3 false positives, but it was impressive. The fact that it put the player onto ignore as well helped a load as well.
The last time I logged into WoW (6 months into Mists of Pandaria) I rarely got any spam like that, even without the addon installed, on a new server (so no ignore list).
But no filter is perfect, there will always be mistakes with it.
Regarding the walls of text that the Gold Sellers spam, it's like playing whack-a-mole to click on their name. If possible, I'd like to be able to right-click anywhere on their message to be able to add them to ignore or report them as spam.
"I don't think you understand the gravity of your situation."
One Feature I'm finding I miss a lot is the option to have the names of people different colors. Made chatting easier if you can identify someone not just with a name, but a color. People tend to notice colors before shapes so it made it easier for me that way.

Personal rules of good roleplay
1.) Nothing goes as planned.
2.) If it goes as planned it's not good RP
+1
Even better if peoples names *stayed* the same colour between sessions (either via player defined or AT/Spec defined)
