He then turned and looked. "It talked said it had Orc soul in it. Now why shouldn't I kill you Halfling?"

"Because i don't take part in your conflicts with the humans, elves, dwarves and whatever. If i wanted to kill you i already had my chance." He paused, thinking for a moment. "If that is not a reason big enough for you, i'd say you are unable to kill me." The halfling seemed confident in his skill, there was no doubt something more to him than meets the eye.

As he heard Grib's voice, Kevahl relaxed, waving the others forward. Still quietly, he moved up until he could see Grib in the tree.

"Better reason. If we fight now we draw attention of the dwarves even if they are thick skulled they won't ignore sound of fight." That and his companions would be here soon and Grib would have a better advantage. "All involved one way or another."

"Nice chatting with you, but i must be on my way to the southern forests. Goodbye, goblin." He smiled at him, then hopped to a different branch and the leaped to land on a different tree's branch. He would continue maneuvering like this to move swiftly through the forest, as he soon disappeared from sight.

Baruk noticed his trackers

Baruk noticed his trackers halt. he heard the voice as well. Then he smelled the air. Dwarves. Thier metals and hides had a distinct odor he knew well. "They're moving off. ?!" He said as much as asked. Knowing kevahls tracking and scent would be better at telling than his own. This is what made Baruk stand out among other orcs. He didn't think all his skills were superior and trusted the ones he knew had better in certain circumstances. "If they're leaving , gàther grib and lets go. "

---------------------------------------/-------/--------------------

The centaurs charged. They sounded like sheer chaos and power as they tore through yhe forest. The elves followed , some in the trees , some on foot. This would be a glorious day for them.
A smaller female Orc scout named geli heard the thunderous approach. gor had put her here trying to find some usefullness for her. Up a tree with a horn is all he could come up with. She saw the centaurs and as she raised the horn an elven arrow pierced the back of her head. Her lifeless form fell from the tree and so the only warning Gors encampment would get was the sound of the centaurs crashing towards them.

Grib jumped down "They got a magic sword. The sword talked said it was a trapped Orc spirit inside. There was also a halfling but he wasn't part of the dwarves, six dwarves five Arbalests, light armored, the sixth one was more heavy armored. They didn't touch the sword so my guess I was right in not trying to grab it myself when I came across it."

Mukzul picked up a bit of steel and set it in the coals. Then he raised his brow something was off turning his head he spotted birds taking flight in a panic. Soon his ears picked up a rumbling sound. He let go of the tongs and grabbed one of the War hammers from the wall. "Something's Is coming! TO ARMS!"

Tega was the first to hear

Tega was the first to hear anything. "Book, horse hooves." Most the Gnolls at Books tent heard the Orcs and Goblins screaming about Elves. Books Cliff near the skunk trail put them on the far end of the attack.

tega and Hyep looked at Book. Book shook his head no. "We leave, Gor has his guards from the tribe. Too many hunters out." Two of the Gnolls that had come grabbed their axes and ran to help. Gor had been paying them quite a bit, so they would protect him. That left Tega, Hyep, and a 3rd with Book as a centaur crashed up the hill impaling the 3rd on its lance. The Gnoll pulled the lance from the centaurs hands as it fell lifeless.

Book looked at Hyep and shook his staff. Hyep lept ont he Centaur as the Shamans magic coursed through him and his beserke rage coupled to make Hyeps brute strength rivaling legend.

Hyep tore the centaurs arm from socket and blugeoned it to death with its own arm.

"We go, before the elves." Book lept down the cliff followed by Tega and Hyep." Book had spent 20 years on his own discovering the secrets of his magics, so leaving the doomed camp didn't phase him at all.

"Where we go Book?" Tega had what the Gnolls would consider a soft voice. Book grinned back. "Hide till night, then we have advantage. We find survivors then, or head up hills, whichever better."

The three Gnolls set down the human road, only Hyep leaving tracks. Tega was a novice ranger compared to the half-orc but still experienced enough not to leave footprints. The Elf war party wouldn't send more than a single tracker after a lone set of Gnoll prints and humans were not traveling this late in the day.

The encroaching darkness was always an ally.

"Five arbalests?" Kevahl

"Five arbalests?" Kevahl shook his head ruefully. "That would've been a haul. But without backup you would've been a pincushion, and they'd have had a sixth. Too late to go chasing them now, I have to finish binding the rim of that wheel before we can go."

A pretty (by goblin standards) girl name Yasmi heard the warning shout from Mukzul. She turned up the broom she'd been using and hit the head of it with the flat of her hand. The bristles spun off of the threaded bronze ferrule her suitor - well, one of them ^_^ - had crafted for that end of the broomstick, and with the more ornate ferrule on the other end she had a good quarterstaff. She stepped out of the hut where she helped to make medicines and walked over to meet up with Mukzul.

Grib started back "Dwarves scared away any possible game. It also means there more activity in woods then I like. Lets get that wagon fixed and get back to camp fast. This was six dwarves who knows how many other groups of them are out here."
-----------------------------------------------------------

Mukzul "Range weapons and long handled weapons! Those be riders coming! Aim for the animal legs!" He was wondering where Gor was he shouldn't be issuing orders himself. But the old Orc knew how to fight so he stood awaiting for the riders to show. That was when the first appeared "CENTAR! Still Aim for the legs! Same weakness!" Then he charged the coming centar roaring his own battle cry swinging his hammer for the front legs.

Yasmi pulled a box from her pocket and a Hand formed of mystic energy carried it towards where the riders were coming. She saw the centaurs at the same time Mukzul did, and heard his advice. The box opened and tipped, scattering a score of caltrops along an arc about ten feet in front of the line of defenders. Then she turned to an orc staring at her blatant use of magic. "Enemies are that way." She pointed her staff at the centaur leaping over the caltrops, and sent off a ray of frost for emphasis. "Don't let them catch you looking at me."

As they got back to the wagon, Kevahl resumed wrapping up the rim, making a leather tire around the circumference. It would likely only last a few days, but the trip back to the village would be measured in hours.

Baruk returned to the wagon

Baruk returned to the wagon and met Ligi and the goblins. "We need to get back. " is all he said He waited for grib and Kevahl.

Gor came charging from his tent armed and armored. His guards flanking his sides Boto the closest. gor pushed his way past them and charged a centaur that had just decapitated another Orc . He roared and swung his axe. It came down and severed the centaurs arm . The centaur reared and kicked out with its front hooves. One clipped Gor in the jaw but didn't phase him at all. He brought his axe up and into the belly of the centaur. The fluids and innards poured out as it collapsed to die a slow and painful death. "Flank them there!!!" Gor yelled out trying to get whatever warriors he had on the left to circle around the other centaurs. Three goblins folowed the order and ran into an elf. They stabbed at them with thier spears. The elf crumbled caught by surprise and then another elf cleaved into the first goblin with its blades.
Boto was following Gors order as well and came across the elves. A feirce battle with blades ended with an elves decapitation. Boto then found himself struggling against two others. Then the goblin spears found thier mark. Thrusting in on the sides and rallied by Botos presence they struck at the elves and sank their spears deep into the elves sides. Boto pushed past the falling elves and turned to face an aimed bow. The arrow hit Boto in the chest , then it was followed by six more.

Tega nudged Hyep and pointed.

Tega nudged Hyep and pointed. the two stopped. Tega spoke first. "Hoof prints cross here" Book looked at the location the young ranger pointed at. "Good catch. So they came from there?" Tega nodded. Centaurs and Wood Elves were amazing at covering their tracks, but it was a large party and a Ranger knew what to look for. Book had been lost in thought or he may have seen it himself. Hyep finally decided he wanted to do something. "Book, we kill stragglers when they come back."

Book nodded. He was a Shaman, he only led when asked to, he hated leading. "Tega, where do we ambush from?"

Tega sniffed. "This path used often. Thought it was just wild horse path, centaurs rare, but I smell weapon grease, this them. They will travel back the same way, it their nature to have one way into and out of groves."

Book looked at the Barbarian and ranger, well they had taken out a Minotaur together and dispatched a Centaur within a minute. Well he would survive, and do his best to make sure his clan survived until it looked helpless. "We will kill the stragglers who either are retreating, or returning with spoils of war."

Gnolls were odd creatures, they stood as tall as basketball players, but could hide like hobbits given time to prepare. Tega looked at Hyeps weaponry, for most races they would call it a gladius, he called it a toothpick. It was all he had grabbed when Book signaled the escape. "Hyep you hide here"

Tega took the time to conceal Hyep near the path in a rocky undercrop. She nodded. Her work was excellent. Book waved off Tega. He fell back into Hay high grass just outside the treeline and bent down. He would be out of melee range so he hid himself easily. His fur blending in with the grass.

Tega took up position further into the centaur path. She could pick off any who returned to help Hyeps victims, or block off the escape of any who escaped his knife.

The Gnolls were ready. Their loyalty to the other races was thin. But they owed blood for blood. Baruks raiding party had freed them, they would exact a heavy toll on the woodland races for killing baruks tribe.

Mukzul tried to duck the incoming blow Centaurs were tall and unlike a horse and rider couldn't lean to one side to get a low blow. Unfortunately Muk was quite large and the centaur was falling. So he took a blow to the back the blade biting into his left shoulder. He still returned the blow with another of his hammer this time at the now crippled Centaur's head. The hammer striking the back of the head with enough force to rupture the skull. "Where are the Gnolls? Blast them all! Goblins If you have any poisons don't save a drop! Just remember which ones we can't eat!"

Three more rays of frost

Three more rays of frost struck centaurs as they tried to get past Mukzul. Through a gap Yasmi saw a clump of Elves, with only fallen orcs and goblins amongst them. She moved in, and from her staff a spray of flame went out at chest height - which was about hip high for the taller Elves. She then fell back behind Mukzul.

After tying off the last knot, Kevahl said, "Lift that corner again, please!" It was almost a command, despite the polite phrasing. He tipped up the wheel and made ready to slip it onto the axle.

Oh the rush the thrill of

Oh the rush the thrill of battle, how he missed it, and despised it at the same time. A second Centaur charged him he knew he couldn't count on the same tactic twice so he met charge with one of his own. He braced his hammer in his arms and ran at the charging Centaur shoving the hammer up at the chest, was it a chest? Centaurs have two one for the horse and one for the man. Well anyway his hammer went up to the chest of the man part as his shoulder slammed into the area where the two parts met. For a moment it looked as if Mukzul would fail his knees buckled as the Centaur pressed on ignoring it's own pain to get a killing blow on the Orc before him.

That was when Mukzul let go of the hammer and gripped the front legs and lifted up, with the thrust on the abdomen he soon toppled the centaur over. His balance was thrown off as well and he fell with the centaur. That didn't stop him thought as his hands gripped the sides of the foe's head and he twisted causing a wet audible snap. Starting to rise was when it happened two arrows flew into his back. "AGHHHHHHHHHHH"

-------------------------------------------------------

Grib was nervous "hurry up with that wheel. Something's up, I want to get home fast." His eyes scanning the treeline for Dwarves he couldn't shake it but something was wrong. Of course he just assumed it was the dwarves that was causing his nervousness.

Grozz kept himself busy by

Grozz kept himself busy by assisting Kevahl with the wagon. He needed to do that because something felt... off. But he couldn't figure out what it was. And that's what worried him the most.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Having given Baruk proper warning, Skore had started back up the skunk path a few minutes before the attack began. But unlike his descent, he was not moving at his top speed. He took his time and communed with nature along the way.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Julia's head whipped up as she heard Mukzul yelling about the camp being under attack. She squatted and placed her hand against the ground and could feel the approaching rumble of whatever was charging the camp. She looked over to the other slaves in the tent. "Quickly, out the back! Stay together and make for the woods! Cenya, lead them to the upthrust rocks in the clearing fifteen minutes from camp. I'll gather who I can and meet you there. Evard, take Dooley and gather what you can from the food tent, then follow Cenya."

Cenya the halfling and Evard, another human, both nodded. They were her trusted lieutenants in the bizarre little union the slaves had succeeded in forming. That was mainly because they reported to Tark, a fat and elderly Orc who fed Gor bullshit about the conditions the slaves lived in. If Gor had his say, the slaves wouldn't have their large tent, beds, lanterns, or access to the food and supply tents. Julia thanked the gods every day for Tark and his somewhat caring nature.

She shoved her bed over a few paces and dug into the soft earth directly underneath where the bedpost would have rested. After an inch or so, she uncovered a wooden box. Engraved on the box in a childish scrawl were the words: Tu Julia frum Gruug.

Though some thought it odd, Julia had loved Gruug as much as she could have loved any other man. While he had put on a coarse and brutish appearance around the other orcs, he'd always been so sweet and bashful around her after she'd been 'given' to him. It was that behavior that endeared him to her and she eventually fell in love with him. The day she had told him she was pregnant with Grozz was one of the happiest of their lives. And on the day that she had been forced to watch as he was killed, a part of her heart had died with him.

The days after his death were a blur of pain and degradation. When she'd finally been allowed to return to the slave area, she'd found the box under her pillow. Gruug had obviously put it there the day he'd been killed. Through her tears, she'd opened the box to find two finely-crafted daggers. As she picked them up, a cold feeling had swept through her and she'd gripped the daggers tight, swearing to never be helpless ever again.

Julia's mind snapped back to the present and she yanked the daggers out of the box, slipping them into the forearm sheaths that were hidden by the voluminous sleeves of her dress. She looked at the box and contemplated taking it, but realized she had to travel light. So she closed it and covered it back up, then pulled the bed back into place.

As Julia approached the back flaps of the tent, her ears registered the snap of a bow string. She crouched and gently spread the tentflaps. There was an elf almost directly outside and it was taking pot shots at the slaves that were attempting to flee. It had already killed old Sonya, who appeared to have been trying to protect little Karlo, a recent addition. It looked like Sonya had fallen atop the boy, and then he'd been shot trying to get out from underneath her body.

A rage lit within Julia and she silently drew her daggers, springing upward to drive them underneath the elf's light armor and into its kidneys. The elf made a strangled and high-pitched gasp, then slumped to the ground dead. She cleaned the daggers on the tent flap, then slid them home. She registered motion off to her right and drew the right-hand dagger blindingly fast, throwing it in the same motion. The dagger impacted the elf's left eye and she dropped like a sack of potatoes, her half-pulled bow firing an arrow into the dirt. Julia strode over and yanked the dagger from its grisly sheath, then cleaned it again. She set off into the forest, stopping long enough to close Sonya's eyes, only to discover that Karlo was still alive. She rolled the old woman over and said a quick prayer, then picked up the little boy and disappeared into the trees.

Baruk watched as the wheel

Baruk watched as the wheel was finally slid back on. "Grozz, drive the horses" Baruk knew Grozz was the best at this and could move them faster. The wagon had been loaded with all the dead and all their equipment. Finally the small raiding party was màking its way back to the tribe. Unknown to them the turmoil they headed into.

Gor was swinging at anything he could. He'd even managed to kill two goblins that stood near him for support. He had a few arrows sticking out of his armor and one in his neck. The arrow in his neck was in the muscular lower part and hadn't hit anything crucial. Gor was yelling out orders " flank them!! Shoot the elves!! Push them back !! " it seemed to nobody. A group of goblins more afraid of gor then the elves were trying to follow orders to the word. They were cut down by the elves and only took two of them with them.

Yasmi saw the arrows go into

Yasmi saw the arrows go into Mukzul's back, and the goblins cut down by the elves, and knew there was only one thing to do. She cast two magic missiles into the elf that had shot Mukzul, threw up her shield spell and ran. She had noticed the Human slave escaping into the woods, that seemed as good a direction to go as any...

Kevahl was still pounding in the last cotter when Baruk gave the order to move out. He gave it one last whack and jumped into wagon. He pulled the bolt out of the shoulder of the guard he'd shot and passed it to Grib. "Be ready to use the arbalest if we need to, I'm going to lead the horses." Night was falling, and the horses would move faster if someone who could see in the dark guided them around obstacles. From his pack he withdrew two apples, sprinted ahead of the horses, and let them get the scent of the apples, using it to lead them along the clearest path while Grozz drove them.

Some of the Wood Elves on the

Some of the Wood Elves on the tree line had held back from the initial charge. Let the centaurs do that part. They watched to see where they were needed. No one had returned from further up the hill yet. Fighting around the largest tent was near pure chaos. A chieftain was bellowing orders in its gutteral brute language.

Most the centaurs and elves int he initial charge were still alive and fighting, but a few had fallen quickly to rather huge specimens of the lower races.

The company commander had thought that this encampment had slaves, but most the typical signs of slaves were missing. There was even a human fighting against elves who had tried to free her.

He concluded they must be hired sell swords. The great tree curse humans! They would work for foul Orcs then they would die with the Orcs.

The company commander took aim and was pleased to watch his arrow find its mark. One of the three Gnolls left guarding the chieftain Orc fell dead.

Using hand signals he sent half his reserves to flank in the direction the sell swords had fled. he sent another third to flank what looked like a crude foundry. An old beast was pushing back his centaur allies.

Chirping he issued for his reserve archers to open fire. deadly missles with the accuracy only wood elves naturally had howled through the wind to find their marks.

Grib jumped onto the back of

Grib jumped onto the back of the wagon and took the bolt adding it to the others. "Alright" He held the Arbalest looking it over now that he had it he was trying to think of reasons not to give it back. He did think of shooting Kevahl when his back was turned, then again Baruk would be quite angry about that. Something about Honor or such nonsense. Sighing he settled down on a crate. Blinking he looked at the bound body of the woman's dead brother drawing one of his knives he cut the cloth. Humans tend to leave some personal items with the dead. Stupid humans not like a dead body needs a sword or even clothing.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mukzul had one advantage he was skilled fighter and still physically powerful. The disadvantage was the only protection he had was his thick leather smith apron. "The Archers! Someone get those bloody elves! Poison your weapons even a scratch then can be helpful!" He ran for his forge and the weapons rack there, he needed better protection and there was a shield ready.

Grozz spurred the horses

Grozz spurred the horses onwards. He didn't know why Kevahl had insisted on going ahead, as Grozz could see in the dark as well as he could. That feeling of dread was still there and growing stronger. Taking the horses to nearly a full gallop, he began to pull alongside Kevahl. "Baruk, grab Kevahl as we pass him!"

As he got closer to camp, Skore began to realize that something was very wrong. He picked up speed and was soon moving flat out up the hill. He reached the rock wall, planted one foot and bounded straight upwards, catching the wall halfway up. He began swiftly scrambling up it and reached the top in time to see a new volley of arrows fly into the camp. He followed their flight path and estimated where the archers were stationed. Skirting the camp while trying to quiet, he began to close on their firing position, only to be stopped as a group of elves armed with melee weaponry were skirting the camp in the other direction.

Skore dove into a tent and waited for them to pass, then paused for a second to decide which group to go after. The squad that had just passed him was obviously trying to set up a flank somewhere. But the archers were just as much of a threat. Deciding, he moved off in the direction of the flankers. He soon caught up to them and closed with the first one from behind. A knife hand shot out and connected with a nerve bundle in the elf's neck, robbing him of the ability to continue moving or to speak. His weapons dropped to the ground and Skore caught the elf as he fell. Gripping the elf's head, he snapped his neck, then laid him down and rolled him underneath a tent flap.

He moved onwards and caught up to the group again. Two of them were side by side, so he wouldn't be able to repeat his last attack. Instead, his hands shot out to grasp their long, pointed ears. Both elves cried out and he smacked their heads together with a crunch. They both dropped, but the squad had turned on him by then. The squad leader said something, then brought up his bow and fired. For Skore, time seemed to slow for the barest of seconds and his hand came up to deflect the arrow from its flight path. As the elves drew their swords and charged, he ducked between two tents and vanished into camp.

A group of centaurs wheeled

A group of centaurs wheeled and trampled a small grouping of Orcs and Goblins. They had lost many brothers already but now the elves were doing what elves did best, firing deadly volleys into the low races.

The two surviving Gnolls who were guarding Gor were being hard pressed until one of the two Gnolls from Books camp that had managed to survive this long joined them. One barked asking about Book or better yet Hyep. The newcomer barked back that they had killed a Centaur and went over the skunk trail wall just as the flight of arrows found their marks.

Most the Gor camp fighters who were not shot down by the treeline elves were being pressed back behind Gors walls. to avoid looking like pin cushions.

The smithy fighters didn't have as much luck finding cover. Very few of the Goblins fighting near the big smith survived the first volley.

The other group of flankers was at home in the woods. They moved faster than the mislabeled slaves. The slower slaves taking arrows to the back before they had a chance to surrender, or even know they were being pursued.

-------------------------------------------------------

meanwhile:

Books ambush party waited. The Gnolls sensitive ears every once and awhile picking up faint screams. The Orcs had been caught flat footed and unprepared, but they might survive he thought to himself. Well once the elves came back through and Hyep had his fill of killing he would go back and patch up survivors.

As the wagon crashed through

As the wagon crashed through the woods, Baruk scooped up Kevahl and tossed him in the back. The remaining ride back was rough with the cart nearly toppling over as its wheels struck roof after root. Then finally they got close enough to hear the chaos insuring. They could hear Gors voice barking rediculous orders , and then elvish ones as well. "Elves!" Baruk cried out and jumped from the slowing wagon. He was enraged by the mere fact someone dared attack his tribe. He ran fast towards camp and loosed his axe at the first target he saw. It sunk into what turned out to be Kini's back and threw her forward a few yards. Fin and Gil were so caught up in the moment they folowed after Baruk screaming curses at the elves in their native tongue. " Grozz, Kehval " take out thier archers . Baruk roared knowing how good Grozz was with his bow and Kevahl could pierce any armor with his weapon. "Grib, sneak and kill". Baruk knew gribs stealth and sneaking , backstabbing , and poisining, was his best method of attack and to try and have him do any other type of combat was crazy. " Ligi head to forge and gather forces. Meet back here " As Baruk was giving orders , the elf standing next to Kini turned and attacked. Baruk parried the blow with his metal bracer and them thrust his spear through the elves neck. He then grabbed the elven bow and a sack of elven javelins. 7 in all and he went back to where Grozz and Kevahl were. He'd help with the deadly archers using javelins hus preffered ranged weapon. The bow was for Kevahl if he ran out of bolts .

Sighing Grib passed the Arbalest back to Kevahl "The bolt in it already been poisoned with a centipede poison. It would make moving harder who ever is wounded by the bolt." He passed over the other bolts as well. Kevahl was the better shot it was better for him to use the thing then Grib. He drew his new daggers and went into the woods sneaking up on elves was hard given how they themselves use sneak methods. He made sure his daggers got a fresh coat of poison he would need every advantage he could get. So of course he went for the ones most distracted.

---------------------------------------------------------

Mukzul charged back into battle this time with a shield and a sword. His swings were slightly sloppy one handed swords weren't his best skill that was his hammer, but he couldn't use a shield with it. "Get the Lamps! Throw them at the elves! Set them ablaze!"

As soon as the wagon had come

As soon as the wagon had come to stop, Grozz was off and running, not even hearing Baruk's commands. He shot through the camp in a beeline to the slave area. He burst through the flaps to find the tent empty, but the rear flaps were open. He passed through them as well and immediately found the two dead elves, as well as Sonya with the arrow in her back. The wounds that had killed the elves looked like his mother's work. Drawing his falcatas, he took off into the woods and headed for the rocky outcropping where he knew his mother would gather the slaves. The fact that he was able to remain silent while moving at nearly a run gave testament to the level of his training and skills.

Kevahl would've pointed out

Kevahl would've pointed out that the horses couldn't see, and would move faster with someone leading them, but they quite obviously trusted Grozz more than he'd thought they would. He accepted the arbalest back from Grib, and took the warning about the centipede poison. He looked for the heaviest armor among their enemies and loosed the poisoned bolt, then leaned back to maximize his cover while he worked the winch to draw back the steel cable.

Baruk loosed the javelins as

Baruk loosed the javelins as fast as he could. Of the 8 total archers the elves were using to pick off he only hit two.Cursing very loudly in orcish he took a very quick overview of the situation. The battle itself seemed to be turning in thier favor. Of the centaurs, 5 had been killed already and the last two were injured, one severely. The 20 plus elves that were there over half were dead, or trying to regroup in some way. Kelvhals bolt had claimed another of the archers he noticed. He then saw Gor, fighting a centaur, trying to bark orders that made no sense with nobody really listening. He saw that some of gor's guards had been killed, and the others were too busy trying to enforce Gor's orders on a hapless band of goblins and the odd orc , than focusing on the threats in the area. "Gor so stupid" Baruk said outloud. He knew this was his chance to make a stand with the remaining forces and drive the attackers back. Having thrown his axe already, he had only his sword, and his spear. His spear, his favorite of all weapons, it had saved his life over and over, and caused countless deaths. He kept his sword hilted, and grasped the spear with two hands. Baruk would lead the charge. He bellowed a battlecry that was astonishingly loud. He ran headlong into the fray. Arrows came at him and one stuck in his thigh. He ignored the pain and and thrust his spear forward, putting it in the neck of the archer that hit him. Then he dropped flat as another few arrows soared over his head. He had fought many a wood elf before and knew thier tactics. Springing up he grasped a lower tree branch and lifted himself up even higher than ground level as two more arrows sunk into the ground where he was laying. He roared again. He then came down between the two archers who were scrambling for there blades and just barreled over them, knocking one into a tree and the other flat . Sending his spear into what he hoped were vital areas as quickly as possible, he moved off as fast as he could. He charged to where Gor was.

A very skilled elf swung high than low, while trying to turn his opponent. The giant of an orc named Mukzul, had some arrows in his back and yet he continued the fight. The elf that was sparring with him was very good with its twin sowrds. It danced a bladed dance of twisting and winding slices, and jabbs. Ligi had arrived at the tnet and witnessed the dance of the blades and Mukzul's battle with the Elf leader. Unsure of what to do Ligi waited for an opening and linged, The elf parried ligi's attack while blocking Mukzul's at the same time. Ligi was then sliced on the leg and stabbed in the shoulder and he went down.

Gor stood and yelled as this last centaur was the best skilled yet. Its blades had already founf thier mark a few times and Gor was bleeding from some minor slices on his arms and left leg. The centaur itslef had been hit a few times, but eneyrtime Gor and his guards tried to encircle it, it woudl just back off, and kill one of Gor's guards and force them to regroup. The battle scene now was Gor, a gnoll, and anothere single orc trying to flank and surround and get a hit in. evey advance was met with blade, or armored hoof and sent them back.

Grib waited then he got a shot. Baruk Javelin was a good distraction. So Grib moved in and jumped onto the back of one of the archers and drove his blade into the elf's neck.

-----------------------------------------------

Mukzul knew he would die this day. His breath came harder and harder one of the arrows must have damaged his lungs. The Elf before him would be his undoing so He didn't hold anything back it was a good death. Sword struck sword, sword striking shield all there was is him and the Elf. Ligi changed that for a moment the elf focus was split, Ligi went down. No he would not have his death be taken from him! The glory of combat the fire burning in his veins. He tried to roar again but blood splattered out of his mouth. Still he fought on increasing his attack on the elf. There was one move the elf wouldn't expect, one move that would end both their lives. There it was Mukzul didn't try to block the blade as it went into his gut instead he charged forward and brought his shield to block the other blade as his sword went for the killing blow at the Elf's ribcage right for the heart. Coughing blood in the face of the elf "It's a good day to die."

Ligi struggled to his feet ,

Ligi struggled to his feet , his wounds were deep but not life threatening. He hobbled over to Mukzul and looked down at the twisted bodies of his friend and the Elf leader. The elf had a surprised and gaping look to his face. Ligi grunted and Grabbed the nearest weapon, a sword dropped by the elf. As he turned he stodd facing another elf who was visibly agered at the death of their leader. The elf moved quick and struck fast. Ligi wasn't able to parry the blow enough, and the elves blade sunk into his chest as he gurgled and fell back on top of the twisted forms of the other two. The elf then dissapeared into the woods, the battle was over for him.

When Baruk arrived by Gor , the centaur had already dispatched the other orc that stood by Gor and was fighting feircely with Gor and the lasty gnoll bodyguard. Baruk waited and saw his moment, His spear thrusted out and caught the centaur in the hip, stunning it with pain and forcing it to back up. Gor roared again but this time at Baruk. "You try to take my kill, my blood right!!" He snarled Baruk's direction. Baruk Ignored him and Thrust again with his spear, putting the point in the armor joint near the front leg of the centaur. Again the centaur backed off. Gor was enraged and ignoring all else charged Baruk. The rumors must have taken thier toll, that and the frantic fight for survival, Gor was enraged in a personal vendetta , blind to all else, he wanted to kill Baruk and claim the battles victory for himself. Baruk sidestepped the charging orc only to be caught by the hilt of a sword to the jaw, and was staggered. The gnoll confused as what to do, was suddenely confronted by the centaur that took its oppurtunity to charge while the two orcs were distracted. The gnoll swung its jagged sword, and raied its sheild in a defensive stance. Too late, the centaur had iits hooves out and kicked at the Gnoll, knocking it back while deflecting the meek swing. The centaurs sword arced out and the gnolls head went flying. It then turned to the orcs. Baruk stunned, and Gor turning to attempt to finish him off. When gor came around, and lunged at Baruk again, He did little to dodge, Instead last second, planted his foot on the butt end of his spear and braced pointing at Gor's gut. Gor caught the move too late, being over tired and wounded, his body impacted the spear and the weapon gave very little ground as it passed through Gor's chest and out his back. Baruk smiled somewhat at the sight of Gor's body impaled on his spear, but only for a second. He dove out of instinct and drew his sword. The centaur hadn't charged though. It stood there, weakened, and bleeding, watching the battle. It was too injured to charge the meagre distance in any effective way. Looking around quickly it realized the battle was lost. Too many had fallen and this orc looked to be a tough fight. It was losing blood too fast and was even starting to get dizzy. It slowly back away defensively as it stared down Baruk, who was holding only a small human made sword. The centaur turned as fast as it could and started to trot back into the woods. As it tried to gain speed , dizzy and injured in its legs it suddenly stopped. Fin and Gil stood before it meekly holding little knives in an attempt to appear threatening. The centaur looked down at them and then fell over. Fin and Gil scrambled back then noticed Baruks spear jutting through its battered armor from behind. Baruk roared a victory cry as to try and rally whatever forces were left from the encampment. "FIND THE REST AND KILL THEM" he yelled to woever was around. Grabbing a second orcish blade he stalked the encampment looking for any more of the enemy or any other allies he could muster.

Grozz soon caught the elves,

Grozz soon caught the elves, who were busy taking shots at the slaves that they had pinned down. He began to approach the fight methodically, until he heard his mother's screaming voice. "STOP FIRING! THESE PEOPLE ARE SLAVES! FOR THE SAKE OF THE GODS, STOP FIRING!!!"

Her voice sent him into a full-on orc battle rage and he charged the elven contingent from his concealed spot in a copse of trees. There were seven elves and Grozz moved amongst them like an avenging ghost. The first two never even saw him coming and his falcata caught the first one high, the axe-like sword cutting into the armpit of her bow arm and carving upwards to exit on the other side of her neck. The second one was hit low, the falcata severing both legs just below the buttocks.

The other five elves wheeled and fired on Grozz, but he leaped up and scrambled into a tree faster than anyone they'd ever seen. So busy were they concentrating on where he'd disappeared that they didn't expect him to drop down on the other side of their formation. Their first realization came when the tips of his swords exited the chest of his third kill, the elf having just enough time to look down before Grozz pulled outward and ripped the elves torso asunder. He then charged though the fountain of blood and swung his twin falcatas, taking off the heads of two more elves.

The final two elves were the leader of this seven-elf contingent and his lieutenant. They began backing away from the enraged half-orc, both firing arrows at him. He spun away from the flight path of the arrows and threw one of his falcatas, which caught the lieutenant in the gut, the blade burying itself deep. Her arms went numb and she dropped the bow as Grozz advanced on her to repossess his blade. It was then that the leader's arrow hit Grozz in the lower ribs. Grozz grunted with pain, but whirled on the leader.

The leader turned to flee, only to find Julia's twin daggers at his throat. "Stand down, son." she said, looking over the elves shoulder at Grozz. The half-orc approached slowly and laid the blade of one falcata against the elf's neck, then used the other to carefully hook his shortbow and yank it out of his hand, throwing it to the side. That blade's tip was then brought to rest in the hollow of the elf's back.

Julia locked eyes with the commander. She spoke in rusty Elven, the pain in her voice plainly evident. "Why, by the grace of the god's, would you kill slaves?"

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

From a tent, Skore had watched Baruk's fight with the Gor and the centaur. He'd been busy choking an elf at the time, but he was still able to witness the killing blow dealt to both great creatures. Casting aside the unconscious elf, which was now tied to a heavy wooden chest with all of its fingers broken and unusable, Skore exited the tent and tackled a retreating elf. The two of them landed with the elf on her belly and Skore atop her torso, his knees under her armpits. One fist lashed out, the knuckles driving knife-like into her spine, shocking her system and leaving her unable to move. Then the other knife hand impacted the side of her neck with such force that it ruptured the external and internal jugular veins on that side. A deep purple bruise immediately formed and spread outwards as her life fluid was pumped into the surrounding tissues.

Skore began to get up, but he took pity when the elf began whimpering. He reached down and snapped her neck, then stood and moved on.

Kevahl finished cocking the arbalest and placed the next bolt in time to hear Baruk's order. So he hopped out of the wagon, slung his quiver, and went hunting. The first elf he found in the woods went down with the bolt in his gut, but the second was too close for reloading, so he slung the arbalest and drew his blades as the elf charged him...

The flanking wood elves shot

The flanking wood elves near the smithy shot enough volleys to provide cover for their shredded main force. They blended back into the woods like melting snow in the desert. As quickly as they attacked they had retreated. Not even a rustle of leaves betraying they had ever been there.

The reserves commander that had been near Gor's Palace cursed as he led his elves silently through the woods and across the human road. They would bring news back and recruit the local humans to finish the job. They might not have won, but they took two or three for every one they had lost. Who could have anticipated such a lean tribe having that many prize fighters left.

The smithy flankers fell in step. The elf held up his hand signaling 8. They had killed 8 of the goblins and only lost 1 of their archers at some point. Not bad.

Returning with only 10. This would be a day of mourning.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tega saw them first, despite being the furthest down the path. Most the ones with blades looked worse for ware, while the ones with bows seemed sad.

Tega stood and drew back her great bow. The bow groaned at the pull weight. Tega let loose her arrow and grinned as it launched the Commander off his feet and straight backwards. The elf wouldn't have even felt the pain he was dead that fast.

Tega took off down the path.

The remaining elves charged after the lone female gnoll. Just as the third or fourth one passed by the rocks on the centaur path Hyep exploded into their ranks. Thrusting his gladius through the neck and out the armpit of the first elf he clamped down his jaws on the face of the 2nd.

A few of the elves were responding. How did the day go from them getting a surprise attack on these brutes to being ambushed themselves?

Book stood and shook his staff at the elves. As they drew back their bowstrings their bows snapped. Book sneared at them.

Hyep didn't pause. He knew Books magics, Hyep wrenched the gladius out of his first victim and lept on the two with the now broken bows.

meanwhile tega had turned and shot again. The arrow went a little low and only shattered her targets pelvis instead of killing him. The other elf only had a sword but dropped it to pick up his comrades bow. He shot back at Tega. The female Gnoll howled in rage as the arrow found its mark in her cheek. The elf grabbed his friend and carrying him over his shoulders disapeared off the centaur path. Tega bit down snapping the arrow and spit out the mid section as well as a few teeth it had dislodged.

The last three elves tried to run. Their only viable direction towards book.

Book started laughing an oddly spooky tune.and all three elves went wide eyed and stumbled eventually coming to a full stop just in front of him.

Hyep had tried to catch up but stood still similarly enthralled.

Book gently took the elves equipment, all the time chanting his hyena like laugh. Then he lashed the elves hands behind their backs. The old Gnoll let his spell drop. the elves shook their heads and looked around in dismay. They were captives.

Book looked at Tegas face as she came jogging up. "You be fine, save magic for worse hurts." Tega nodded and helped Hyep secure lead collars around the three elves necks. "What we do with them Book?" Book looked at them and smiled viciously. "Slaves, food, whatever we want."

The three Gnolls began walking back to the encampment. It would take them about twenty minutes.

Baruk came across Ligi laying on a pile of bodies. His lifless form enraged Baruk even more and he wanted revenge. Then Baruk noticed Mukzul's form intwined with the broken body of the Elf leader. Seeing how they obviously died, Baruk saluted his fallen friend and whispered some tribute to him in orcish.

The elf Kevahl charged staggered back a step and tried to deflect the blades. It had been injured on its side and had barely the use of its left arm. It defended the first strike, barely but Kevahl's blades bit deep and finished it off easily.

Skore approached Baruk and held his fists in front of himself, knuckles together. He bowed deeply, then straightened and looked down at the goblin. "Indeed, Grib. I saw Baruk slay Gor in honorable combat. The position of Chieftain is his and I will fight at his side to insure it. I have captured one of the elves. "you are correct Grib, we are not safe here." he looked at the carnage around him. Too many tribesmen had died. " We need a new home. This area to oopen, too many ways to attack and not defend. He looked at skore and gave him the tribal signal of brotherhood. "We should gather our people and find a cave." He looked to the north, although no mountain ranges were to the north of them, there were caves near the cliffs at the very north end of Deepwood. "Skore can you find out how many more there were through your prisoner" he thought a second "We need to be sure we wont be attacked again so soon " he looked down at grib and saw his wound He ggave him a salute of bortherhood, ones who shed blood together. "Grib, gather everyone, we need to make a plan" He then finally pulled the arrow from his thigh but didnt wrap it at all.

The Gnoll trio with their

The Gnoll trio with their slaves in tow wound up the path. Hyep grunted when he saw the lifeless form of the smithy. He had been impressed with his ability to reshape metal. Books only comment was "Got old" Tega nodded agreeing with both at the same time.

Walking into camp Book took note of how many bodies were strewn about. Finally coming to a stop near the now formerly Gor's palace Book addressed Baruk. "So where you taking band?" Book used the undercommon word for band instead of tribe as a way to note how few survivors there were. Book didn't address the fact that he had prisoners, despite them blatantly standing behind the three Gnolls.

The one Gnoll who had survived at the palace tent limped over to the trio. Book barked something in Gnollish and touched his staff end to the Gnolls chest. The seeping wound sealing shut instantly. The Gnoll howled in delight and flexed its torso. Hyep took stock of the Gnoll situation. "Four bad, need find more Gnolls." Tega who was uncommonly soft spoken shook her head in agreement. Book looked at the two and back to Baruk. "Our blood debt payed Baruk, if our tasks don't align we set off."

"Blood debt paid indeed he stated with a snarl" He knew the gnolls were good fighters, and Books spells were useful, but he also knew the tendencies of gnolls and the chaos they spread. As he respected them for thier fighting skills, he loathed them for thier turmoil they seem to always strike up when involved with other races. Especially races they feel are inferior. Baruk had no doubt the gnolls respected him and a few other members of the tribe they had seen fight, but he weighed thier usefullness with that of the turmoil and chaos they sew. His made his choice. "Debt payed" and he mitioned to them a salute of respect through gritted teeth. "Leave as you wish."
He didnt want to even tell them his plan of where he wanted to lead the remnants of the tribe.

The elf began to purse his

The elf began to purse his lips to spit in Julia's face, but then felt the tip of Grozz's blade pushing harder into his spine and thought better of it. Instead, he snorted derisively and a cocky sneer graced his lips. "Hrrrmph! Slaves? Do not lie to me, human. We saw you slay two of our own. You are nothing but sellswords who would sink so low as to work for Orcs. How pathetic you humans can be at times."

Julia's hands began to shake with rage and she almost slit his throat then and there, but she controlled herself. "I killed those two because they were shooting escaping SLAVES! Grozz, bring him."

Julia set off towards the meeting place, with Grozz forcing the elf along, using the sword at his neck and his spine to coerce him. They soon reached the rock outcropping and Julia gave the all-clear whistle. Evard and Dooley were the first to emerge. Both of them had managed to procure shortbows, but they appeared to only have three arrows between the two of them. The rest of the slaves emerged slowly, most of the women comforting the human and half-orc children. The men stood in front of the women and children, some armed with branches, some with tools, and others with their fists.

Julia then turned back to the elf, a fire burning in her eyes. "DO THESE LOOK LIKE SELLSWORDS TO YOU!?!"

The elf blanched for the barest of moments, then recovered his cocky sneer. "They must have divested themselves of their arms and armor so they could put on this little show. I will not be fooled."

Julia snorted with disgust and got in the elf's face. "Let him go, Grozz. He can report back to his tribe about the slaughtering of human sellswords if he wishes. But if he has even a whit of honor or integrity, he'll own up to his mistake and make sure that the rest of his band knows too."

Grozz nodded and led the elf off into the woods. After five minutes of walking, they stopped. Behind the elf's back, Grozz prepared two leather straps, then circled until he was off to the elf's side. One sword was now back in its sheath, but the other was still in Grozz's hand, against the elf's ribs. "She said I should let you go. She didn't say how many pieces you should be in."

With that, Grozz brought his falcata back and swung mightily, removing the elf's left hand at the wrist. The elf cried out and fell to his knees. Grozz immediately tied the largest leather strap around the elf's wrist to cut off blood flow. Then he put away his falcata and produced a kukri. He grabbed the elf's right hand and removed his index finger, at which the elf cried out for a second time. "Unless you find a healer soon, you will NEVER fire a bow again. Run along now."

The elf looked at Grozz with hatred in his eyes, then stumbled off dizzily. Grozz snorted and went back to the rock outcropping after throwing the hand away, but keeping the finger as a souvenir.

While Grozz went off with the prisoner, Kevahl asked Yasmi in the Goblin tongue, "Was that the last?" She nodded. "I have Chief Baruk's orders to carry out. Please don't ask what those orders are where Grozz or his mother can hear." He went off in the direction Grozz had gone, but took almost immediately to the trees, hoping Grozz would pass him by.

Yasmi started slightly at Baruk's new title, but otherwise kept a straight face.

Book nodded. If this new

Book nodded. If this new chief didn't see the practicality of employing his tribemates on their travel to wherever they were going so be it. Turning to the fourth Gnoll, Igak was his name Book barked a few things in their native tongue. The fourth Gnoll growled once but looked at Hyep and laid his ears back.

"We going, taking what Gor owes." Hyep and Igak went into Gors tent and each grabbed the pay the gnolls had earned, all the gnolls. Hyep called from the tent. "It mostly goblin gold" Book barked back to not worry it would be good where they were going.

The two large gnolls emerged with small sacks filled to near bursting. It was fair spoils from past month. Meanwhile Tega went to the armory. She turned the old dead smithy over so his face would point to the sky. "Meet the birds with eyes open" She looked up to see the carrion birds already doing their lazy circles having been drawn by the smell of blood. She grabbed Hyeps other weapon of choice off of the smiths anvil. He had been straightening out one of the spokes of the Gnolls trident.

Once all four gnolls were gathered Book looked at the small gathering of Orcs and Goblins. 'We go through marsh to desert. Find more Gnolls between the two. Hyep ready to challenge. Two elves escaped past Tega, you probably have until morning before they are back in greater number."

The four Gnolls turned to leave towards the marsh lands.

Knowing the coins they took

Knowing the coins they took were owed to them Baruk really could care less. He knew hed see the gnolls again, or he hoped at least Book. The others he could care less about. He also knew what would happen if the few coins the tribe actullay had dried up as each gnoll would expect payment. Why start on bad tides, is his thinking. Too much friction between them and some of his close knit clan. Easier to prt ways and employ later if need be. He knew where he wanted to go, to restart. Book was right about one thing, they hadnt much time. The elves that got past Book and his party were sure to return, especially since they lost so many others, and theyd return in massive numbers , probably with human or dwarf allies.

Fin and Gil approached Baruk as the gnolls walked away and seemed scared. "Make a sled, then another, then another" Baruk told them very specifically. Fin and Gil , with the help of two young orcs and three other goblins started doing just that. They used tent peices, and skins, branches and sheilds to build three crude but effective sleds to pull stuff on along thier trek. Then Baruk went into Gor's tent. It had three wooden walls , and what he called a throne. The throne was carved out of a tree trunk in one solid peice. Baruk didnt even sit on it, instead he gathered up what he saw was useful and and left the rest. He left things othes may have taken, Gor's axe, and sheild, and Gor's daggers. He didnt like the balance of Gor's axe, or his daggers, and he usd no sheilds. The only thing he took of Gor's was the helm. The broken horned helmet that Gor wore was more of a sign than an effective defense.

Grozz soon arrived back at

Grozz soon arrived back at the rock outcropping and looked over the huddled mass. He'd never really approved of slavery, but he didn't possess the strength or resources to change things in the tribe, so he contented himself with the fact that the slaves were treated fairly well thanks to Tark.

His mother approached him and hugged him for dear life. He winced as she accidentally brushed what was left of the arrow in his lower ribs. He'd broken most of the shaft off, but the head was still in there. "Are you alright, son?" she asked, looking up into his eyes.

"As well as I can be, mother. What should we do now?" he answered.

"If you feel up to it, I think you should head back to the tribe. We were only able to get a little food, two shortbows, and a few arrows. We've already spoken and we simply will not be able to survive on our own. Not with such meager supplies and several of us injured." she said, looking around.

Grozz nodded and carefully hugged her again, then set off for the camp. He was back within ten minutes and he headed to the center of camp to see what had changed due to the raid.

After Grozz passed by,

After Grozz passed by, showing no sign of having noticed Kevahl up in the trees, he dropped down and tracked back to where Grozz had released the Elf. From there, he was easily able to track and catch up to the maimed Elf. "Bad news," he said in Common. "Any revenge you might be planning is not going to happen." He fired the arbalest at the Elf's heart.

Leave or stay with the tribe.

Leave or stay with the tribe. That was Gribs thinking, first he still has no idea where the caves his original clan was living in. Two he would be out on his own even the other goblins in this group were of a different clan. He was better off now that he picked up some woods survival skills, was it enough? "Okay Chief, good thing we got that new wagon. Might want to get that wheel fully fixed first thought." He headed to his tent to begin packing.

"Theres no time" Baruk said,"

"Theres no time" Baruk said," we load everything into sleds and move off as soon as we're gathered. Few elves got by the gnolls, and they can return in larger numbers" he thought about it tacticly " if they were nearly wiped out, so were we, they'll send a stronger force to finish the job seeking revenge. We'll haul the wagon as long as it lasts" He looked at Grib. "We head east to the coast and the caves there" With that he saw the two smaller orcs and the two goblins making another sled out of two branches and the skins of a damaged tent. Baruk nodded his approval and then headed to his own hut. It was mostly skins and branches, with one main supporting wall he made of logs. He went inside and removed one of the logs in the center. Behind it, burried in another holowed out log , he pulled a small chest. The chest itslef was dwarven made but had a broken hinge. It was not a very big one. but it contained his horde. There were gold coins, some gems, and two ornate rings. He dropped the small chest in a pack he had taken from a human , along with anything else he found useful, including a few daggers, and some empty water skins. He left the tent and then headed back to the center of the ruined emcampment.
Along the way he came across some severly wounded goblins, and an orc. They were still alive but barely, their wounds flowing from the arrows protuding from them. Baruk simply ended thier misery and kept going.

"We need to move out soon" he was contimplating thier trip. "Gather everyone" he said loudly.

"Do as you wish with them" He answered in orcish, "If they come they have to earn thier keep" he paused, "More mouths to feed may be a hinderence, but ill trust your judgement" he looked to the east," but remeber time is of the essence....and we can always get more slaves" He was thinking of the best thing for the remaining members of the tribe. trying to move more injured and weak would slow them down. Freeing them now wouldn't be a big deal seeing they didnt know where the tribe was heading. He wanted nothing to slow the move. Fast and as efficient as possible for orcs and goblins is all Baruk thought of. "If they do come, they have to keep up"

Grozz nodded and turned

Grozz nodded and turned around to head back into the woods. He grasped at his side as his arrow wound twinged, but he pushed past the pain and kept going. The walk to the rocks took about ten minutes and he spoke with his mother, explaining the situation. With Grozz then standing off to the side, the adult humans conversed amongst themselves.

Julia returned to Grozz's side after a few minutes. "Some of them are willing to stay with the tribe and attempt to live together under Baruk's rule. But most of them would rather head to Imet. It's only a day's walk from the camp. There's no way you'd ever be accepted in Imet, so I'll be staying with you, of course. As will the rest of the half-orc children and their mothers. The rest that are staying are those who don't have anyone to return to and anyone who's only ever known the tribe."

Grozz nodded and gathered the humans up and led them back to the camp. All told, he'd probably been gone about half an hour.

Kevahl removed the bolt from the corpse of the elf and cleaned it as best he could before returning to the clearing. All the slaves were gone, Yasmi had left a note written in the dirt: "back to camp. hurry." Kevahl did so, and got back only minutes after Grozz.

Baruk saw grozz return with

Baruk saw grozz return with those wishing to remain with the troupe. He didnt think much about them, he knew if they were weak and couldn't make the trek theyd just drop pff on the way. Baruk wasn't emotionally attatched to any of them, but he didnt hate them either. He knew there was some benefit to keeping servants, and some liabilities. The ones that make the trek would be worth keeping he thought. Then he tried to take account for who was left. He saw 7 orcs warriors besides himself, and about 12 goblins. There was the ogre, Mukmik, who actually didnt participate in the battle , but Baruk had no way of knowing, and the slaves. (besides our chars). That count was close to accurate as people kept runing all over gathering things. He didnt care what the actual number was, he just knew he had to go. Looking at the group and everything they gathered, he said "Let's go" and then asked Kevahl to scout ahead with Grib. He trusted those two more than any of the other goblins and knew they could keep a decent eye out. "Grozz, you and Skore take back" and then he mitioned to Julia, "Drive the wagon?" he asked as much as told. He wanted to make sure she could so ot to lose anything if not. As everyone started thier march, Mikmuk, puling two sleds with his strength, lead the way. Fin and Gil marching next to him . Baruk hung back with Grozz and Skore and ordered three of his best remaining orc warriors to follow MIkmuk and guide him as he laid out the route to thier firsr night stop. Baruk spoke up to Grozz and asked, "Why did they return when offered freedom?" asking about the slaves of the encampment.

Grozz , Skore, and Julia

Grozz , Skore, and Julia acknowledged their instructions and set about taking care of them. Evard and his partner Dooley helped Julia pack the wagon as Karlo sat up front. The boy had refused to leave Julia's side since she'd helped him. The other mothers of half-orc children stayed in a tight-knit group with the children and the men who had refused to leave them.

The humans who weren't going stayed off to the side, waiting to see what the tribe left behind

Once they were off and Baruk asked him the question, Grozz looked around. "Mother wouldn't leave me and Karlo wouldn't leave her. The women with half-orc children know that they'll never be accepted by 'civilized' humans. Some of the others have nothing to return to and the rest know nothing but the tribe. Tark took pretty good care of them, treating them more like servants than slaves, so they're willing to stay with and continue helping the tribe. Speaking of Tark, did that great lump survive the battle?"

Grib hurried about in his arms were a few bottles of wine. Unlike others he wasn't packing he was hiding them among the rubble. Seeing someone go for one of the bottles he hid "Don't Touch! That gift for Elf scum! They drink a little they get squirts, they drink lots they stop breathing. Either way they don't follow us." Once he was done hiding his poisoned wine he then headed for the front of the group to scout ahead like Baruk ordered.

"Agreed. Wait just a bit." Kevahl made sure his box - everything that he had, but didn't usually take with him while out in the woods, mostly nails and other bits of metal and tools for his tinkering - was on the wagon, then he rejoined Grib and started out to scout the trail ahead.

Baruk's goal was a clearing

Baruk's goal was a clearing due east of the encampment. It was opposite any direction the elves came from so he figured itd be safe for the night. Theyd journey untill sunset ,just so they could rest a full nights rest after the ordeal. After that he figured hed stagger short brakes with odd hours for sleeping but pretty much not stop till they got to the coast. The scouts would report nothing unusual as they entered the clearing, or anything around it or past it. Seemed safe enough for the night. "Fin , Gil!" Baruk called out. " The river east of us" he motioned towards it. "Go, get fresh food"...and he sent them to do what earned them thier namesake. the two were excellent fishermen. they used spears, and dug up shellfish and caught frogs and turtles and anything else edible in a body of water. The river he spoke of was the only barier they had to cross to get to the coast. It wasn't a very strong one, and in most areas it was quite shallow as long as there was no heavey rains recently. Baruk stood and watched as the two scampered off. Then he turned to Grozz, "feed everyone from these" and he gestured to the slaves that remained and the crates of cheese and dried meats. Mikmuk came over to Baruk and said " I like cheese too" and looked at the crate. Baruk noded and allowed the ogre to take a wheel for himself, after he started a fire. Baruk was worried the fire would give away their position if there was anyone looking for them, but he also knew the merits of having one lit. Besides, he liked his fish aljmost burnt when he ate it.

An hour passed uneventfully and Baruk was showing three younger orcs the best ways to use a spear. He showed them lunging , and how to parry, and strike quick. His best fighting wepon was the spear, he was superb with it, fluid, and deadly. Teaching younger orcs to be as efficient would only be helpful. Thats when Fin and Gil returned. they had spears full of fish, two turtles, and a sac full of small crayfish. Baruk saw the haul and smiled. "Who wants fresh fish?!" he asked out loud and proud of his choice to send.Fin and Gil brought Baruk the two largest fish , both catfish, and the bag of crayfish. Baruk looked and selected his fish, it was massive, it could feed him twice, and then just four of the 30 plus crayfish. He then told the two to share the last large one and distribute the rest. Baruk put the big fish on his own spear and held it over the fire. Then he did the same with the crayfish, only using smaller sticks. He invited Kevahl, Grib, Grozz, Skore, and one of the smaller orcs named Ro to join his eating circle.

Grib went around the new camp

Grib went around the new camp checking for spots someone could hide. Then hearing that there was fresh fish he approached Baruk's eating circle. "Looks good not many places scout could hide." He sat down and opened a bottle of wine he haven't poisoned and took a drink then passed it on. "Wine warm but still good."

Grozz had passed the orders for the slaves to be fed from the crates on to his mother and Evard, then disappeared into the woods. He was back forty-five minutes later with a 170 lb buck across his shoulders. Within another forty-five minutes it was skinned, cleaned, and cooking over the fire.

"Seems Grozz brought meat. He just showing off his ranger skills." Grib snorted but nodded as well then he went to a tall tree and climbed up to get a better look of the area around the camp. "Might want to put out fires as soon as meat cooked. No need to have lights going to alert that we are here."

Baruk ate his burnt fish fast

Baruk ate his burnt fish fast, he enjoyed the taste of the blackened meats. As grozz started cooking the buck, Baruk used a dagger to remove a chink of the flesh and put it into the fire directly on the end of his spear. It could never be too cooked for Baruk. As the meat sizzled and the wood in the fire popped and crackled, Grozz looked at the ones in the eating circle. He was chomping on one of the crayfish when he spoke up. "We need to gather as much fish and game we can tommorrow." he swallowed his mouthful. "FIll skins, and jugs with water" he tossed another crayfish into his mouth and crunched down "the jouney will be a few days with little rest. No time to hunt or fish or gather, we stay on the move " he swallowed again "the elves would easily be able to track us as well as any tribe, We're passing the area of the 'Rotted Fang' " he mentioned a well known orc tribe that had warred with thiers a while back. "They may have scouts and may not be welcoming" he looked at the group "We move quickly as possible and stay alert. New faces arern't friendly ones" with that he took the wine from Grib and had a swig. That would be his only one he would stay sober. "how are the humans faring?" he asked Grozz, not quite out of concern for them, but more was curious how they may slow the trek.

Grozz was leaning forward, slicing open one of the deer's haunches to check the color of the meat. He leaned back, letting it cook for a little longer, and looked over at Baruk. "We're lucky. They're a hardy lot. They may not be able to march as long as orcs, but with the exception of some of the children, they'll be able to keep the same speed as the majority of the tribe. Mother and Skore have started instructing them on how best to hide in case we have to get into the bush quickly. Also, this tribe is their family and they will fight to protect it, so I think we should arm them. We still have that crate of weapons on the wagon..."

Kevahl snorted. "Good thing you didn't bring this up until you only had the ones who wanted to stay with us. Before, some might've said they wanted to stay, just to get weapons. And maybe use'm on us."

"But if'n we arm them, they can't be slaves anymore, can they?" Kevahl smiled towards Grozz, thinking that may have been the half-Orc's plan...

Grozz gave a tusky grin right

Grozz gave a tusky grin right back to the cunning goblin. "I think that they're already more than slaves. They have all stated that they want to stay with the tribe. If they're willing to stay and continue to do the work that they already do or even more, why should we continue to treat them as slaves? I'm not saying that they should be paid. Only those who raid or lead are given cuts. But they shouldn't continue to receive slave portions or be abused and mistreated as so many slaves are."

He turned back to look at Baruk, his tone serious. "Why not give them a chance to prove themselves as functioning members of the tribe? It's been a long time since this was a pure orc tribe, so why continue to follow the laws set down when this was a pure orc tribe?"

Grib picked up a stick and poked the fire. "Human tribe members might be useful. Could enter human city and buy goods. To risky to go into small towns and villages, larger groups of humans less they pay attention to who in the walls." He then munched on his own fish eating it nearly raw "I start using bow when scouting."

With nothing to slow them

With nothing to slow them down except for their prisoners the four Gnolls were quickly approaching the marshlands. The ground had the slightest hint of softness when Hyeo called to stop. "Stop here, rest." They 'hobbled' the elves in a circle around a tree trunk.

Igak pulled something out of his tunic, something he had taken from Gors tent. He held his prize up and grinned. Book knew exactly what it was. Gor was stupid, but he had won many battles before being killed by the backstabber Baruk. Gor had shown Book the item only once. He had kept it secret least one of the Goblins try and steal it. Book had told Igak earlier that if Baruk did not hire them to take the item since that would mean they owed nothing to the fledgling leader.

Book took the item. A small gem. "What is it Book?" Igak was curious, as were Tega and Hyep. "It let us see things that hidden or changed by magic or tricks." The three looked at book impressed. Tega spoke up this time. "What you tell Gor it do?" Book cackled. "Told Gor it used to see ghosts. He said that was useless, but some stupid rich human would pay lots for it."

Book put the gem away. "You know, that dead thing that wanted Baruk for quest. This gem woulda helped them. Of course now that Baruk chief he can't just run around going after stuff. Maybe we track down that dead thing and make it tell us where tower is and see if it worth attacking ourselves."

Hyep looked at the elves. "What bout them?" Tega had the first idea "Food?" Book shook his head no. "Sell to slavers. use money to get better supplies. We have a dead mage to find."

Baruk was chewing the burnt

Baruk was chewing the burnt meat he loved so while listening to the talk of the cirlce. He had plans for the humans way beyond slavery. Baruk didn.t actually buy into the whole slavery idea. Force someone to work for you, they work because they have to, poorly. Allow someone to work for you and they work harder. MOre food, grown, better shelters built, etc... He knew enslaving the humans wouldn't reap the rewards of accepting them. "I was thinking the same thing Grib" he said refering to thier ability to trade with others for the tribe. He was just wondering how they would stand up to interrogation. Too many questions in his mind. Baruk knew Julia was loyal to the tribe. He also guess a few others would be, The rest he wasn't so sure. "Grozz , ask highest humans to join, we need to have words" Then he looked over at Grib and Kevahl, "What weapons did we get in the crate, ?" He asked never having looked in any of the crates except the one with the cheese in it. He also knew the goblins themsleves probably knew exactly how much and what was in it. He grabbed another burnt chunk of venison, and took another swig of the goblin wine.

"Ten axes. Five longswords. Five longbows, not strung yet. Five light crosbows, also not strung, maybe meant for gnomes or halflings. At least one I'll string before I sleep tonight, grip is good for goblin hands too." Kevahl smiled at Grib. "I think Grib can use it. Much easier to load than the arbalest, not as much power. But Grib can put a bolt where there is no armor. Didn't count the arrows and bolts, couple hundred each, it looked like."

Grozz nodded to Baruk and

Grozz nodded to Baruk and stepped away from the fire. He walked over to where the human were sitting. He was immediately mobbed by several children, both human and half-orc, begging for "pick-em-ups". Grozz relented and crooked his arms so that the kids could jump up and hang from his forearms while lifting their legs up. He swung his torso back and forth, the children squealing with glee. After thirty seconds or so of this, Julia hollered for the kids to leave him alone and they scattered like mice. Grozz then headed in his mother's direction.

A few minutes later, he returned to the campfire with Julia, Evard, and Dooley in tow. He showed them where they could sit, then stood behind his mother.

Grib reached up and scratched his nose. "I didn't see much weapons crate I open up was more food stuff. Thought the human body that was in the wagon did have a sword I added it to the rest." He looked to the humans now siting by the fire. "You're not slaves anymore so who speaks for the rest?"

Baruk finished the burnt meat

Baruk finished the burnt meat he had in his hands while the humans waited a few moments. He looked at the three and said " why did you stay?" he knew the answer julia would give , obviously, but he was curious about the others. If he were to rebuild this tribe, he'd have to know for certain these humans were here to strengethen it. He knew the goblins that were here would listen and follow Kevahl's lead, even Grib's, though Grib was reluctant to ever carry a mantle of leadeship. But he knew he could count on them. "If you want to be part of the tribe, more than slaves, tell me what else you can do" Baruk had never really cared what the slaves skills were. His priorities were elsewhere in the tribe. He was a guard captain and one of the best raiders the tribe had. Besides being one of the best fighters, especially with the spear. he was the best with the spear in all the tribe. "We need food grown, and caught, and metal worked, and coins counted, and scribes, "....he went on to list alot of skills and things they didn't even have when Gor ruled. He was trying to turn the tribe into more of a functioning society. "Smarter tribes live longer and do better" he swigged a skin of water.."So tell me humans, why did you stay and what do you bring to the tribe besides more mouths to feed." he took another swig and passed the fresh water skin around. "Why should i trust you like an orc, and what are you willing to do for us?" he tone wasn't one of anger, but curiosity. He knew they could be useful, maybe, beyond the basic servitude role, But the plans he had running through his head now relied on the humans being more.

"If we go to sea, fishing and sailing would be useful tools. Caves aren't easy to get enough food unless it goes down to the Underdark where Drow are. Even then you get fungus and mold instead of leaf plants and Insects that are large like dogs. Those can be good thought, I miss munching on roasted cave spider."

When the humans told Baruk

When the humans told Baruk and the rest of the circle thier intentions to stay, and contributr more than being slaves Baruk took it all in and sat silently for awhile. He was pondering and weighing the roles. "You'll be resposible for fishing and growing foods, and trading with other humans. " he looked at julia when he mentioned the trading aspect. He then decided he didnt want to arm the humans yet. He knew they had some of thier own weapons, and arming them now during the trek might not be as useful as lettin gthem appear to be slaves for the remainder of the journey. Hed discuss arming them further at a later time. "Sleep in shifts, we leave at first light" he then said to the others, and he left the circle to go and stand against a tree outside of the small camp they erected. His mind was full of thoughts. He entertained many ideas, even on leaving the group to establisj an all orc tribe elswhere. He was an orc afterall, but that thought lasted only a few breif moments. These are the ones he shed blood with, built bonds with, and the ones that entrusted him to lead. Hed be a cheif of an odd mismatched tribe, but hed be cheif nonetheless. As he stared out into the night, preferring the dark to the sun as most orcs do , he knew hed lead them to the caves, establish a tribe and do what he could to grow it in wealth and strength. He'd send emissaries out to his allies in other tribes of orcs, goblins, even the bugbears he knew. He'd seek out the hill giants he had traded with before, and go to no lengths to build this tribe into a great one. He took the broken horned helm he wore that was Gor's off his head and stared at it. It was old and battered. It sybolized a tribe tha no longer exhisted.he tossed it into the dark forest and then used his spear to draw in the ground. over and over he drew odd symbols. Finally he finished and went into the wagon. He removed a peice of an old torn shirt packed in one of the boxes and used his spear to cut a small flag. He then used blood from the deer carcass that was just starting to dry up and drew on the peice of fabric. It was a simple drawing, A round sheild with two corssed spears behind it. It was very crude, but did portray his meaning, the tribes new symbol. He had Fin and Gil copy it over and over again on torn peices of cloth from the old clothes sitting in the wagon. He then carved the same symbol on his leather vest he wore with the tip of his spear. When Fin and Gil were done making as many as possible,, they brought them to Baruk.

The night past with nothing more than an odd boar roaming close that Baruk stalked, He didnt get to kill it as Kevahl and grozz beat him to it. Thier ranger skills easily felled the small pig as Baruk forced it from hiding. "More meat for the trip" he exclaimed.

When morning came Baruk went up to each member of the tribe, and offered them a banner of the tribes symbol. He wanted to do it personally as a symbolic welcoming them to the new tribe. If they accpeted, he'd salute each one with the the sign of brotherhood, if they didn't want to wear it theyd be asked to leave. Mimuk took the symbol and tied it around his arm band and saluted. Fin and Gil took thiers with excitement and wore them strapped to thier chests with pride. The youn orcs saluted back and took thiers as well. He offered them to Grozz, Kevahl, Grib, Julia....then he walked over to the humans. He lo9oked at them and then offered the sashes to them as well.

Shortly after the moon

Shortly after the moon reached its zenith, Yasmi woke up. She went over to the wagon, and inspected the leather wrappings around the broken rim. Finding a place where she could push the wrappings aside without removing them, she cast a spell she hadn't had the mana for after the fight yesterday. Within the wrappings, the crack in the rim disappeared, restored to as it was when the wainwright had first made it. After replacing the now redundant bindings, she went back to her blanket to go back to sleep.
__________________________________________________________________________________

The next morning, Kevahl examined the new banner and nodded. "A promise to our people. A threat to our enemies." He didn't know if that was what Baruk had intended, but it was a good enough interpretation for him. He took his copy - fortunately one of the smaller ones - and attached it to his armor on his chest. Then he returned Baruk's salute.

Yasmi also accepted her copy of the banner, wrapping it over her left shoulder to hang down her arm and returning Baruk's salute.

Grib had the last night duty

Grib had the last night duty when it was darkest so he was up when the Boar was captured. Then when he returned to camp Baruk handed him the banner. Grib scratched his nose a bit as he looked at it. He understood the idea of clan and tribe symbols they were often painted on the walls marking territory in the caves he grew up in. The idea of wasting cloth for it was something he still hasn't got use to. Not wanting to insult the tribe and Baruk personally he followed suit and attached the banner to his weapons strap.

Somewhere in the south.......

Somewhere in the south...............Bolg the orc swung his mighty mace like weapon and shattered the remains of a slintered dwarven sheild. The dwarf weilding it went down under the massive blow. Two more charged blades swinging, one bit into Bolg's thigh as the other swung high. Bolg blocked the high one and took the wound he was dealt in the thigh with a roar. He brought his mace down and crushed the dwarf who swung low, the other backed up to regroup. "Destroy the guards, take all of it" He roared as more orcs and some other races poured out of the treeline. The ambush was perfect, a caravan , heavily guarded , by dwarves and men, were losing to a powerful attack organized by an orc and it's allies. One of the said allies, a grey and black colored minotaur , stood facing the lead caravan. The caravan's driver had been slain, and it had nearly crashed into the wood. Standing beside the Minotaur was a massive two headed figure. "Gol", the minotaur spoke to the Ettin.. "Drag the whole thing back to the master" The lumbering Ettin heard what was said and grabbed the horses and started to drag them through the trees. Ky, the minotaur, stood and watched Bolg Kill two human guards who didn't run when the others finally broke and ran. He looked across at his powerful ally and said. There should be enough meat with the dead and the horses to feed us today. The master would want everything else. He motioned to the crates that two other smaller orcs were rummaging through. Bolg grabbed the first orc and tossed him against a tree. "That belongs to the master" he stated and glared at all the others. It wasn't long before the orcs and thier allies were leading the caravan back through the broken trail the Ettin took.

Baruk watched as the party with its lone wagon made its way towards the coast. Three days of uneventful travel and they were nearing thier destination. Baruk stopped the group as they approached a clearing. He looked at kevahl,Grozz ,and Gribb, his quietest scouts, and mitioned for them to check it out. He saw smoke in the distance and figured it would be from there. It was still early in the day, so they didnt have the cover of night to pass whoever or whaever it was.

Kevahl approached the

Kevahl approached the clearing from the left and above, all of his weaponry secured. It would take time to ready the arbalest if he was spotted, but if he didn't have time, well, that was why he carried swords. In any case, the point was to spot, not to be spotted...

The tree he was in had looked like it would be the last one he could reach before the clearing, and sure enough, there was a gap ahead. Kevahl eased forward, slowly and silently, until he could see into the clearing...

The clearing where the fire

The clearing where the fire burned was a site to behold. the smoke blew upwind of the group which is why they didnt smell the burning of flesh. Three men were burning the bodies of what appeared to be fallen orcs and goblins. They had just started the fire recently and barely had the pyre large enough to consume the first few corpses they threw on it. there was a pile of what looked liked the orcish weapons and armor, and another pile of bags. the men looked tired but determined to finish this task. they spoke no words, just went about thier jobs.

Grozz was on the opposite

Grozz was on the opposite edge of the clearing from Kevahl, his shortbow at the ready if he was spotted. Setting the bow down, he cupped his hands and loosed the call of a bird that didn't live in this part of the country. If Grib and Kevahl heard the sound, they would know he was ready to attack.

Kevahl saw the men, and knew that he didn't want to just wait for them to leave. He draped a wolf fur over the ratchet mechanism to mute the sounds, and began spanning the arbalest. He had just started when he heard Grozz's bird call. He ratcheted faster.

Grib looked over to Kevahl

Grib looked over to Kevahl then pointed to his eyes then held up three fingers. The message was simple 'I see three' Grib then looked again careful of not looking at the fire as he tried to figure out which of the humans was the look out, there the one on the north side. Indeed the lookout had a crossbow. He motioned to Kevahl then at the lookout better to get that one with the arbalest. Grib drew two daggers then pointed to himself and to one of the men that was closest to him. Then he heard Grozz bird call nodding it seems they were ready.

The men meandered about

The men meandered about almost aimlessly. the lookout with the crossbow put it down to help lug a corpse of a rather large orc to the now growing pyre. As he grabbed the legs the orc kicked slightly. then groaned and opened its eyes. The gash it had near its neck was bleeding profusely and it had appeared dead. "This one's not quite gone" the man said as he grabbed hold of its legs tighter. "just toss it on , as is.. the fire will finish it off " the other said very droll. "we were told to finish any off that remained" he added. They drug the still alive orc towards the fire . It had lost alot of blood and couldn't really fight back.

Kevahl was almost finished

Kevahl was almost finished cocking the arbalest, so he made his own bird call and abandoned stealth. Two more turns finished cocking, and he laid the bolt in the groove and found the crossbowman again. A heartbeat later the bolt was flying towards the crossbowman's chest...

Grozz knew that Kevahl would

Grozz knew that Kevahl would go for the crossbowman, so he aimed for the other one. As he noticed that the orc they were dragging was still alive, he knew he had to attack immediately. As he brought his shortbow up, he heard Kevahl's return whistle and let his arrow fly.

The arrow had barely even left the forest when Grozz dropped the bow and drew his swords, charging towards the third man with a full-blooded orcish battle-roar The third man heard the cry of his compatriot as he was struck in the upper thigh by an arrow and he looked over, then his head whipped around when he heard the howl. He tried to drop the body he was lugging and grab his sword, but Grozz was too fast.

With two powerful swipes, Grozz disemboweled the soldier and slashed across his face, mutilating his eyes and nose. The man screamed and collapsed, what was left of his face turning white with shock. Grozz left him there and turned in the direction of the one he'd shot.
