Darnstrong's Art Thread

Sup All,

My name is Don (Darnstrong), I am the Senior Graphic/UI Artist for COT. I thought it would be cool to start an art thread of some of my work for you all to look at. I will of course include anything for COT that i am allowed to share :). I am sure i will be doing a meet the Titan soon, so i won't give to many spoilers away but i can tell you i have been a graphic artist for the better part of a decade, and before that i coloured comics, In 2016 i went back to school for Interactive media design and production where i picked up my new love for 3D modelling and a fancy new diploma. You will of course see lots of my 3D stuff in game.. :)

I will update this thread with tons of art in the coming weeks for you all to enjoy, and some COT stuff for you all to drool over.

I look forward to interacting with you all in the future.

From an artistic point of view, I really like the Guardian icon. I don't know how you did it, but somehow you combined some almost insectile elements with the overall feel of an angelic protective embrace. Masterfully done, in my opinion.

I am working with one of the coders from MWM and we are building a PC version of STOOPID, it will be published under MWM. We are making some good progress on it in between working on COT.

Here's a few samples of some WIP stuff from the game.

This is a sample of the UI for the game, and one of the backgrounds, i am working on 3 for the launch, there is also an expansion called Brain Dead, that will make the decks customization and add a new card type.

NOTE: All this is subject to change.

If you are able, pick up a copy of STOOPID it is a super fun game to play.

Does that mean we could see something like this in game, in which UI elements, or even power effects react to noise?

I can just picture a sonic power that lets us customize the sounds as well as the looks. And what a cash shop opportunity that would be! Buy new sound bites for your sonic powers and for your control powers that make people dance, and for your base jukebox, and for ....

I do know Unreal has this ability and wouldn't be very difficult to add, whether there are plans to use it i am not sure.. I am sure one of the others could chime in on this, and give you some kinda of answer. :)

It's funny but I recall times

It's funny but I recall times where I'd play CoH with the sound/music turned all the way down. I didn't do that because I hated the various noises it made - it was just after years of playing it I had pretty much "memorized" every sound to the point that I could listen to other music or the radio or whatever else and not really miss out on anything.

If there was an option to easily customize various sound effects in CoT I'd bet I'd be more motivated to keep listening to the game because it could sound radically different depending on what sounds the characters around me were using. ;)

Yeah you'd think the game would have to launch with at least a few basic sound effect choices to account for all the various props/emanation points. It could probably get away with a handful of basic ones to start with and then have more options added to the game after launch as time allowed.

I'd just assume the sounds come with the aesthetics. If you use bullets you get gun sounds. If you have a revolver that shoots fire, fire sounds.

Having a variety of different sounds for aesthetics might be nice. I'd just worry about the process taking too long, which might discourage players from making alts.

Right but who says "laser beams from your eyes" must necessarily sound like "laser beams from a laser rifle" or "laser beams from the palm of your hand"? Just saying it's something worth considering.

To be fair I wouldn't expect there to be thousands of sound effect options ready to go for the first day of launch. But like Kiyori Anoyui was saying if you're using a bow prop the power should sound like a bow, not a howitzer. The prop/emanation point in question could (and should) necessarily affect how a power sounds when used.

I wouldn't worry about the complexity of character design discouraging anyone. There will be defaults for everything, so you just pick your power set and press play if you want.

But I do think you're on the mark when it comes to sounds. Let's imagine someone has a bow as a prop. The bow will come with one or two standard default animations and each will have its own sound file. When the time comes to customize your power set abilities, some of them will have PROP as an option.
Here's what I mean:
So let's say you are a Ranger with the Force Blast power set. The time comes to customize the animations of one of your ranged attacks. Your options include both emanation point and motion animation. So that would include a number options that are available for that specific attack, among them are some martial arts moves, throwing moves, and hand gestures. But since you have a prop, there should be an additional option to choose one of your prop-specific motions. In this case, the animations of the bow and their associated sound files. Since this is a single basic attack, you get one that looks like you're pulling and loosing an arrow.
But let's say that your character design has you shooting lightning from your bow instead of arrows. So you select lightning as your aesthetic for that attack, not PROP; but you do choose your prop as the emanation point. In this case that would be the bow. So the animation of the power calls up the motions associated with the prop, in this case that would be your character pulling back on an imaginary string and letting it go. You wouldn't see the string or the arrow because the string and arrow are part of the default power effects of the prop, not part of the effects of lightning. So the power effects and associated sound files would be of lightning and not an arrow and a string. And while the system says it is the bow that is the emanation point, in order to show it proporly, the emanation point is actually the knuckles of your draw hand, so it looks like you pulled back on thin air and then released a lightning bolt from the same place an arrow would have come from. Thus I would expect that the lightning power effects and lightning sounds would be the same no matter where you chose your emanation point.

I had to pick one of the more complicated animations as an example.

How sure am I that this is how it will be done? Pretty sure, because I can't imagine it being done any other way.

Therefore, I would expect that the visual selections would have their own assigned sound files. It would seem that being able to customize the sounds would be an academic exercise at this point. In fact, I think this might be fertile territory for the modding community if MWM doesn't sow there first.

But what if you had blue fire

But what if you had blue fire that you wanted to act like frost, meaning to make it sound as if it's a icy breeze. I feel like it should be like CoX where you have a dropdown just like an aura and be able to pick from the list of available power sounds. So you could essentially make a punch sound like a shotgun blast. Or make something else unrelated work. I feel like the sounds shouldn't be sectioned off. Just my opinion though

I know Avelworldcreator has stated that they have a vast library of sounds, so I don't see why it would have to be limited

These sound tracks sound very similar to the "incidental music" tracks from the sci-fi series Lexx, which is fine because Lexx was a great series. I'd recommend it to everyone - it was kind of like Farscape if Farscape had been created/directed by Terry Gilliam.

When i asked WarCrabbit this question he had this to say.

"City of Titans plans to have a number of games in fiction, associated apps, and in-game mini games. Right now, STOOPID! is planned as a game-in-fiction that people play, and more as things develop."

In other words YES!, we plane to have many in game apps that the NPCs and players will be able to use. :)

I don't do any of the concept artwork for the game, only concepts i would have done, would be for logos, icons and UI elements..

I think part of that saying comes from the irony that oftentimes an artist's work is relatively undervalued (at least from a monetary point of view) while they're still alive and only becomes much more valuable after the artist's death. Thus while they're alive they are supposedly stuck in the "poor and starving" stage of their fame. Obviously that's not always the case, but it's happened enough times over the years to make that "a thing" that people say and think about.

The hand in the control icon is deftly rendered and easy to understand. I also like the direction of the arc showing the nature of the icon is an increase or a decrease at a glance.

Some questions:
1. In the old CoH system, sets and some IO had unique icons. The examples that are slotted and from the existence of the legend, it appears as if the augments and refinements will have a standard to their depiction. Is this intentional to denote that they are generic and we would expect to see unique icons for sets and inventions, or will all CoT Augments and Refinements be standardized like this?

2. Judging from the names of the augments, It appears an augment is useless without a refinement to go with it. Do you know if this is how it will be? Nevermind. I just saw and read the update on Augments, which answered this question.

3. How final is this?

(P.S. Extention should be Extension, and should Power Cose be Power Cost?)


I like to take your ideas and supersize them. This isn't criticism, it is flattery. I come with nothing but good will and a spirit of team-building. If you take what I write any other way, that is probably just because I wasn't very clear.

I can't comment on what will come, but these were built with a standard in mind, I am the one responsible for most of the symbol languages you will see in game, and part of what i do for the design process is create a Standard, or alphabet so to speak. Each one i make has it's own. EI, the semi circle, depicting direction.
I have replaced the posted picture with the correct one thanks for pointing that out :) And nothing is final till..........it's final, But as these have seen the light of day, they most likely are final.

I must admit that i like the

I must admit that i like the shapes of the augment and refinment ^^ they fit together perfectly and in an obvious way : 1 central augment and refinments around.

But (there is/are always a / some but ^^). If can, i would let you know some things :
- why make all those icons translucent ? The augment one could be plain and the refinment one could be transluscent. That could make the type more different at first sight
- the blackcolor of the recharge refinment is disturbing To me. Why not let it white with the actual white translucent (or light grey) ? With that , it Will follow the general style
- some icons have a ligthened border (have more light on the edge ) whereas the other dont. It could be better, to my opinion, to put light on the edge of one type (e.g : refinment ) and no light on the edge on the other type (always for harmony)

I don't want To tell you what to do ^^ you are the professional :) that is just what i pointed out when i saw the picture (during the time i'm waiting to the doctor xD)

My first thought was that the augments were at the bottom and the refinements were at the top. To me that would make it easier to quickly gather and understand the information.

Also not a fan of the translucent icons. If they're covering information important enough that we need to be able to see the UI through them, then the UI needs work.

The more I reread this and

The more I reread this and check out the graphics the more it is growing on me.

A little different from COH but not a lot, just enough to be it's own construct yet with a familiar feel. I've decided yes, I do like it. Though it bears much exploration but hell that's a lot of the fun of the game.

I'm not a huge numbers cruncher so I don't have anything to say really to those arguments but I do like that the mechanics sound different enough to make it a new learning experience when game play starts which is fun for me!

It sounds to me like there are a variety of ways to craft the same power depending on what kind of character you are constructing. So you don't necessarily have to be aiming for the most powerful combination so much as fitting to your character concept both in aesthetics and mechanics. While many don't appreciate this, I for one do. The same power can have a completely different look and feel from one character to the next as well as slightly different augments and refinements which is a nice touch depending on how you "Role Play" your character assuming one RP's at all. Again I was never a min/maxer so I like this arrangement, another aspect of the game to explore.

I remember in COH I often felt several of the "Power Sets" were very much a cut and paste from each other but with locked in aesthetics (keep in mind even the limited color customization wasn't available for first several years in COH). MWM is managing to break several of the limitations inherent to the "how it should be done" that we or at least I tend to have preconceived notions about simply because that's how I've seen it done elsewhere. I do see compromises along the way but I don't think they are bad ones.

As I'm understanding the work they have presented thus, while there are limited power sets from which to choose at the onset of the game the implementation of those sets is so versatile I really don't see this as a problem. This shows me a sophisticated approach in design which can sometimes be difficult to pick up if you aren't privy to the "behind the scenes" roadmap for the game.

Anyway, I just wanted to say I like what I'm seeing and as always look forward to the next update!
