What You Know - the Unforgiven

CapeChaser Tweet-Summary: The Unforgiven are a powerful and enigmatic street gang wielding the dreaded supernatural power of bizarre and eerie curses.

Legal Status: The Unforgiven are a criminal organization, a wide-ranging street gang composed of multiple bands and cells. Many members are wanted for crimes committed before they joined the Unforgiven.

Members can be recognized by the gang sign, a flaming sword thrust through a green apple, usually worn as a patch, pin, or tattoo. Gang members typically wear green ties or belts with a gold buckle or gold pin depicting a sword. Many but not all Unforgiven have an aversion to showing their faces in public, covering them with scarves or ski masks or hiding them in the shadows of hoods or floppy hats. Many Unforgiven have a sickly cast to their skin tones; fair-skinned Unforgiven often have chalk-white complexions, and even darker-skinned Unforgiven often have a waxen look to their skin. When they unleash their powers, often as a last resort, bizarre manifestations of the supernatural surround them: clouds of darkness, waves of cold, and monstrous changes in appearance. An atmosphere of eeriness and wrong grows palpable around them, and it is no wonder that the Unforgiven’s name is a byword on the street for ill luck and curses.

Location: The Unforgiven operate throughout South Titan, with the notable and somewhat inexplicable exception of Lotus Hills. They fight the Pyrebrands in Ironport and the Barons in Liberty Harbor but are strongest in Charleston, particularly Corrosion Park, and in Shadow Town. The Unforgiven often lair in abandoned public places such as parking garages, office buildings, labs, and even bank branches, but they superstitiously avoid any place with religious significance. They often act as if they’re “haunting” the areas they claim for the gang, stalking local residents mysteriously, lurking in the shadows, and the like.

Notable Members: Alaric (leader); Pardoner (mysterious master of curses)

Stated Purpose/Goals/Motives: The primary goals of the Unforgiven seem to be the same as any street gang’s: gain respect in the underworld, expand their strength and numbers, and enhance their control over mundane crime within their area of influence. They are known rivals of the Pyrebrands and the Black Rose. Most other underworld groups consider the Unforgiven “spooky” and unnerving.

The Unforgiven are known for a creepy lack of affect and for strange, obsessive behavior. They tend to be an insular group. Once someone joins the gang, he begins acting more and more cut off from ordinary human beings, usually interacting with them only as victims or foes. Where their Pyrebrand rivals are explosive and wild, the Unforgiven are quiet and mournful, rarely speaking except to threaten enemies and bemoan their fates. They have a well-deserved reputation for taking frightening, even self-destructive action when crossed.

Exploits The Unforgiven are deeply associated with curses, and the gang has a reputation for bringing supernatural misfortune down on those who cross it. However, whether the Unforgiven bear curses, inflict them, or some combination of the two remains unclear. Some say that advancement in the Unforgiven comes through wielding ever more powerful curses and that high-ranking Unforgiven depend on the gang as much for protection from their own strange powers as for armed support. The shadowy Pardoner seems to manage the gang’s relationship with the supernatural. However, the brutal and inhuman Alaric leads the gang. Street rumor has it that he holds his underlings in awe with his control over dozens of curses.

Combat Information: If attacked, the Unforgiven will fight with weapons or their fists, employing their strange and often self-injurious powers only when necessary. Their powers vary wildly, but many are as dangerous to the Unforgiven themselves as to their foes. Like most of Titan City’s gangs, the Unforgiven work together poorly. Many of their strange abilities endanger everyone around them, including their fellow gang members.

The Unforgiven’s curse-like powers vary wildly from member to member, seemingly sharing little in common other than being bizarre and frightening. Some Unforgiven display relatively straightforward—though shocking—abilities like transforming into monsters or inflicting pain by touch. Others wield stranger and more subtle powers, such as vomiting forth swarms of vermin, calling up destructive clouds of shadow and static, or even summoning faceless killers who attack everyone in sight, including their summoners. These powers seem obviously magical, but their exact source remains unknown. More powerful Unforgiven are sometimes heard bewailing their fates, wishing they could be free of their terrible abilities.
